That is a signature Floor move that we call the windmill. Floor is Dutch. This is a deep song for Tuomas the songwriter. You nailed it 3 minutes until the end of Tuomas. This song is dealing with the firing of the 1st Nightwish vocalist, Tarja. The fans loved her and Tuomas received lots of complaints from the fans which sent him into depression. He contemplated suicide when he though it might be the end of Nightwish and this led him to write this song about him manic depression and guilt for the firing. thank God he wrote this song about a musical suicide instead of the real thing.

Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time. As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his in ears turned off during the spoken passages.

There is a counterpart to this song. While "Poet and the Pendulum" reveals Tuomas' feeling about the break-up with Tarja its foil "Master Passion Greed" reflects his feel towards her "manager" (former lover, now husband). Needless to say to expect a complete diss-track sung by Marco! Nightwish never played that song live and never will afaik, because the emotions have vanished over time. So people need to rely on the studio version...the one with lyrics to get the whole sharpness.

Greetings from Finland & welcome to the international family of Nightwish fans. Just wait until more members of the Nightwish army troopers discover your channel. P.S. Their current female lead vocalist since 2012 (official member since 2013), Floor Jansen, joined her first metal band "After Forever" at age 16 as a backing vocalist, but soon became the lead vocalist. When After Forever disbanded, she formed her own metal band "ReVamp" before being asked to join Nightwish. She's also featured on many other bands'/artists' records simply because she's one of the most versatile & best vocalists there are in the world of popular music. P.S.S. To show Tuomas' attention to detail in composing songs, if you start a timer during this song when the young boy speaks the words "Now I only have three minutes..." and stop it when Tuomas makes a hand gesture of cutting his throat, the timer will show 3 minutes, give or take a few seconds depending on how you actually managed to start & stop the timer.

One of the best Poet and the Pendulum reactions I've seen. Most of the time, people encourage reactors to research the backstory behind this song before listening, and in a lot of cases, that does add a lot to the reaction, but sometimes, and this is definitely one of those cases, often when it's a reactor who has a lot to offer when it comes to feedback about the music, it is better to come at it fresh so that you can just focus on what an incredible piece of music this is, what an amazing composition, rather than spending all your energy focused on appreciating how Tuomas just ripped his ribcage open and gave you a good look at his heart and soul. Don't worry about pausing, pause as much as you want (You do push it back most of the time, which is good). There are 2 main kinds of reactors. People who enjoy music and we like to watch them experience a piece of music we love for the first time along with them... those kinds of reactors, it's best if they don't pause too much. People like you, who really know what you're talking about and can offer real, valuable, interesting feedback and analysis about what is going on, you guys should pause as much as you want. On this kind of reaction, yes, we want to see you experience the music with us, and your facial expressions are priceless when your doors are being blown off, but your insight is terrific and best given in the moment, not talking over the music. Thanks for this one, I really enjoyed it.

The old adage "All artists must suffer" has never held more true. This masterpiece was born from one of the darkest eriods in Tuomas' life. It is a blessing that he managed to get through it, gifting us with this wrenching experience, instead of falling the way of so many others. Side note: incorporating and modeling the theme around Poe's "The Pit and The Pendulum" is but another stroke of genius on his part; the imagery and atmosphere fit like a glove.

Your depth of appreciation is uncommon, and I'm therefore going to recommend something I think you will find worthwhile, for some of the same reasons I see you find Nightwish so rewarding, also from Finland, an absolute treasure chest of musical wonders, and also epic, symphonic style folk metal, being Wintersun, from The Forest Seasons, 'Lonliness (Winter)'. And Nightwish's current drummer, Kai Hahto also drums for them, but in this track, the amazing Jari Maenpaa apparently does everything, and the main reason I'm suggesting the song is because of his vocal performance. Well done!

Great reaction video! Thank you! This song is such a beautiful masterpiece that it gets me every time - goosebumps, chills and tears. But what is just as big is the story BEHIND the song. When you understand this, it becomes even more moving. I see that others have explained this story in these comments.

I loved the way how you guided us through the whole composition. The intensity in how you inhaled the whole performance. Your suprise when the bass guitarist started to sing. The setup in a cellar and its dark background, the dark clothes you wear is totally in synch with the performance we see on the video. For me you became the perfect Nightwish reactor. Looking forward to the next reaction.

The Doubling with Marko and Floor is significant because the part of the song is called Mother and Father. It's a conversation with his parents consoling him

When he was destroyed he sought out his mother who showed him that comforting love giving him the strength to carry on. Damn I miss that...once again that part brings me to tears. When you lose your parents no matter how old you are you lose that..

The great thing is, there are a few dozen more great Nightwish songs from Wacken, Wembley, Tampere, and Bueno's Aires to go and each one is uniquely different but all superb.

I always thought that "Now I only have three minutes and counting...I only wish the tide would catch me first, and give me a death I always longed for" meant the speaker was drowning (that's about how long it takes to die of suffocation), and was wishing that the tide would "catch" him, and dash him against the rocks, ending his suffering all the sooner. The significance being that instead of praying for salvation, the speaker prays only for a quicker death. After his final words, wishing for death, you can hear (more clearly in the studio version, but still audible here) the sound of heavy ropes or weathered wood creaking under strain and finally snapping. He got his wish; the waves tore him from the altar, and later he washes up on shore, already dead.

Great reaction. Love your expressions. Ghost river, seven days to the wolves and devil and the deep dark ocean are dramatic, powerful and amazing. Would love to see your reaction to them. Thank you 😀

The more I think about it, the more I believe either Tuomas was in love with Tarja or saw her as his own muse, and somehow things changed after she got married. Obviously it took time, as she got married in 2002 and fired in 2005, but I guess this 3-minute reference is a metaphor for the 3-year gap between 2002 and 2005. Although I can't tell, my guess is that this was the main reason for firing her, even if she was actually becoming more and more distant from the band as they stated in the open letter. This is also compatible with the fact that he started a relationship with Johanna Kurkela years later, in 2009. There are multiple references to Tarja in the album this song belongs to (Dark Passion Play). In this song the part related to the child (Tuomas) who's being raped again and again may have to do with him being suffering all this time. Eventually the old naive Tuomas died and a new version of him was born, nor better neither worse, just different. And by naive I mean "perhaps he still believed she might come back at some point during these 3 years" (with all my respects to Tuomas, of course).

Disturbed's cover of The Sound of Silence is also pretty good. and we could add Eluvitie for our folk metal brothers.

I've always felt this song was one of Anette's best studio performances for Nightwish - her warm voice fit the calm parts especially well - but even then Floor managed to just take it to a whole different level. An astounding live performance.

Floor is an awesome singer and has delivered on all the older material. However Annette may be the weaker singer, BUT this is her song. She is much more mellow particularly during Mother and Father and takes it to places that Floor just cant
