LYRICS:
[Part 1: White Lands Of Empathica]
The end
The songwriter's dead
The blade fell upon him
Taking him to the white lands
Of empathica
Of innocence
Empathica
Innocence
[Part 2: Home]
The dreamer and the wine
Poet without a rhyme
A widow writer torn apart by chains of Hell
One last perfect verse
It's still the same old song
Oh Christ, how I hate what I have become
Take me home
[Chorus:]
Get away, run away, fly away
Lead me astray to dreamer's hideaway
I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more
I cannot die, I, a whore for this cold world
Forgive me
I have but two faces
One for the world
One for God
Save me
I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more
I cannot die, I, a whore for this cold world
My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven
Adventure-filled days
One with every smiling face
Please, no more words
Thoughts from a severed head
No more praise
Tell me once my heart goes right
Take me home
[Chorus]
Get away, run away, fly away
Lead me astray to dreamer's hideaway
I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more
I cannot die, I, a whore for this cold world
Forgive me
I have but two faces
One for the world
One for God
Save me
I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more
I cannot die, I, a whore for this cold world, a whore for this cold world, a whore for this cold world
[Part 3: The Pacific]
Sparkle my scenery
With Turquoise waterfall
With beauty underneath
The ever free
Tuck me in beneath the blue
Beneath the Pain
Beneath the rain
Goodnight kiss for a child in time
Swaying blade my lullaby
On the shore we sat and hoped
Under the same pale moon
Whose guiding light chose you
Chose you all
"I'm afraid, I'm so afraid
Being raped, again and again, and again
I know I will die alone
But loved
You live long enough to hear the sounds of guns
Long enough to find yourself screaming every night
Live long enough to see your friends betray you
For years I've been strapped unto this altar
Now I only have three minutes and counting
I just wish the tide would catch me first and give me
A death I always longed for."
[Part 4: Dark Passion Play]
2nd robber to the right of Christ
Cut in half - infanticide
The world will rejoice today
As the crows feast on the rotting poet
Everyone must bury their own
No pack to bury the heart of stone
Now he`s home in hell, serves him well
Slain by the bell, tolling for his farewell
The morning dawned upon his altar
Remains of the dark passion play
Performed by his friends without shame
Spitting on his grave as they came
[Chorus]
Get away, run away, fly away
Lead me astray to dreamer's hideaway
I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more
I cannot die, I, a whore for this cold world
Forgive me
I have but two faces
One for the world
One for God
Save me
I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more
I cannot die, I, a whore for this cold world, a whore for this cold world, a whore for this cold world
"Today, in the year of our Lord, 2005
Tuomas was called from the cares of the world
He stopped crying at the end of each beautiful day
The music he wrote had too long been without silence
He was found naked and dead
With a smile in his face, a pen and 1000 pages of erased text."
Save me
[Part 5: Mother And Father]
Be still, my son
You`re home
Oh when did you become so cold?
The blade will keep on descending
All you need is to feel my love
Search for beauty, find your shore
Try to save them all, bleed no more
You have such oceans within
In the end, I will always love you
The beginning

My CURE - 10 years ago my life was turned upside down overnight as I got very ill with menengitis. I didn´t know at the time, but after returning home from hospital I started my descent into darkness. Cognitive problems, anxiety, fatigue, dizziness persisted and started to become my everyday. There were periods I felt depressed, totally empty and my hope was fading. The worst was the guilt that I had in me for destroying the life I had once wanted for my family. I didn´t feel the beauty in life anymore. I was locked in a prison without walls. That was until I seen Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013. I somehow found myself watching it one day. I don´t know where it came from but it was like getting struck by lightning. I cried for the first time in nearly a decade. I couldn´t believe the beauty I felt. It was PURE BEAUTY. I watched it over and over... tears every time. Soon after, I watched this live version of Poet And The Pendulum. I felt so deeply connected to the lyrics. I felt it was written for me. I processed so much pain listening to Poet. I later called it my cure. 1.5yrs on and I´m enjoying my life again, I feel beauty in this world, I am so grateful for my chance to be alive and despite any issues of anxiety and fatigue that still plague me, it´s a wonderful life full of love. Nightwish changed it all for me. I will forever be grateful for Nightwish - the greatest gift to my soul

@@ShadowZero1980 12:15ish is one of them. From what I remember, he's said in interviews that he doesn't really like to sing publicly, which is why there's never a mic on him at shows. There's one REALLY old album from around the start of Nightwish where you can hear him sing, but that's it. But in many of the live concert recordings, you can see him singing along in some of the most intense emotional moments. This song started out as therapy for him and allegedly helped him not commit suicide, but from what I've heard, it's since become somewhat of a burden to relive every time he performs it. One of my favourite things about this recording is the emotional intensity, especially from those that have been part of the band the longest and who lived through the incidents that led to Tarja leaving and to this album. But you can also tell it's a really rough ride for them.

I must also write my thoughts and emotions. I also comment Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013. I am a 42 year old male from Germany, who listen since about 1992 or 1993 to Metal. My first experience was Metallica - Black Album. It was awesome. As I wrote I come from Germany and English is therefore not my native language. I hope I can transfer my thoughts and emotions to you. We were about 5 friends end of the 1990's. Playing Computer games together, other board games and so on. We had a great time. We were listening at this time to Hammerfall and Rhapsody. But this suddenly change. About 2001 or 2002 one of us was at a Metall festival (not Wacken) and he met Nightwish. He was the first fan from us and bring it to us with some videos of this band. We took a look and we were flashed. WHAT?? A woman is singing? What a great voice...It was stunning. So we all become fans of this band. It was great music from great musicians with the mastermind at the keyboards. So we went with Nightwish through our lives. From now on I write only my opinion. I was really sad when I heard Tarja has left the band. I will not comment this decision. But I want to write, what I notice during live videos of the band. I don't know what it is exactly, but there was a difference in the stage performance of Tarja. It seems, that there was already a break between her and the band. I was very curious as I heard Nightwish had a new singer. Therefore I bought the Album Dark Passion Play. It is a great album with great tracks, the music is Nightwish, but the complete Album is it not. I will explain it better. The musicians were as always perfect, great tracks were written, but something was wrong..better different. It was the vocals from Anette. Don't get me wrong, she is a good singer, but she gives Nightwish a different style, it was with her vocals more to Pop (only my opinion). Don't understand me wrong. I heard the Album Dark Passion Play many, many, many times in my car. But for me it was Wishnight and not Nightwish. So I explain it to me. Then my interest in Nightwish was getting lower and lower. I don't hear anymore to them. So I don't recognize directly that there was the next change by the singer. I saw many houndred times now Ghost Love Score. Sometimes I also saw "The Poet and The Pendulum". My interest was born in this song. I was also listening to this song as I hear the album before, but I don't recognize the emotions in this song. Anyone knows the meaning of this song, so I don't want to say many words about this. Now after so many years after releasing the album with this track, I recognized what Tuomas want to say with this song. First of all: Kiitos Tuomas! This is a masterpiece. Worth to be mentioned with Beethovens 9. symphony as a example for humans music. It is hard for me not to cry during this track. Also and I think this is more important for me. Dank u wel! @Floor Jansen You bring back my love for listening to Nightwish. Also you show me how wonderful this song is. How Floor sing this song, this brings me always goosebums. Right in the beginning, when Floor pronounce "torn" and "christ" a little bit different. Wow! This brings shivers to me. Also after Marko's part, when Floor sing..."spitting on his grave as they came" Oh my god! This is emotion pure for me. And then the last part "Mother and Father". I can really imagine, how Tuomas and his parents sit in Finland (I think the parents lives there) in a wooden house before the fireplace during winter and Tuomas mother says this words to him. This brings me to tears. Thank you Floor for such many emotions during one song. I don't know what it is exactly, but Floor hits with her singing always a piece of my heart. My father died too early many years ago. I remembered during this track always on him. This makes me cry but also it makes me happy during the last part. I know, that this sentence is also something my father will spoken to me in such an situation.

I'm not surprised. Tuomas did say this song was something he had to write as a catharsis, a way for him to kill himself in a song so he didn't do it in real life. It's raw, deep and full of despair, self-hatred, anger and eventually acceptance. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the things he thought about when writing was the 5 stages of grief.

One thing that pops to mind every time i see this video, is the sheer amount of courage Tuomas must have, to perform such a personal song in front of so many people, he must be revisiting the pain again simply by doing this, and he is handling it insanely well, truly a inspiring person.

It can be. Or it can be chronic. I think I was 11 when the idea first occured to me that the world might be better off without me in it. I am now 31, and fighting with everything I have not to be forced to rely on the system to catch me for a third time. After 20 years, you'd think the tears would have dried out. Apparently not. After so long, even with help, it's hard not to wonder if that desease might not be everything you are, after all. That thought isolates you slowly from everything you love...And the magic of this song is precisely that, for 13.56 minutes, the loneliness goes away for a bit. And, as much as you'd wish no one would ever have to feel like that, the relief of not being completely alone overrides the guilt of finding some solace in another person's pain.

@Corey Keller I would characterize it as more of a modern day adaptation of classical composition style where the peice is composed of individual movements that are telling a story. Still in a sense individual "songs that are similar" but slightly more nuanced. As time goes on Tuomas seems to adapt an increasingly operatic format which frankly fits the bands style perfectly.

For me there not one song that comes even close to 'The Poet and the Pendulum'. It stands out in the most remarkeble way. The composition, instrumentation and vocals are out of this world. @@joguipo Okay, first of all, that is a myth. Also, it would be highly inappropriate for Floor to ask such a thing at a time when she was just a temporary replacement in the band. The opening is done, if I am not mistaken, by Tuomas' wife. Second, Floor and Anette has done the same bits live. There is no difference to their performances in this regard. The both have sung the same sections, Marko did his, and the song has stayed the same when performed. Why this is treated like something awesome is beyond me. Anette did the choirboy thing in all the live performances as well from the start.

@@StarOfArtemis This part, along with the ending, is the weakest part in the song for Floor though. She really can't get to the soft spots that Anette had. Instead she resorts to a halfway thing between wannabe opera and something else to compensate, which doesn't work. She does the same in the ending, which totally ruins it. So no, she is not that good. I did like the performance overall though, but she has never really "gotten" this song the way she has with Ghost Love Score.

Yeah me to, the first time I saw this video, I saw that it's 14 min, and I thought: hmmmm not sure if I have the patience for this. But mand I wasn't bored for a second. What a great song

I think we had reached peak humanity with that gig. I sincerely mean it when I say this was the best live experience I've ever had and I go back a long way; what an amazing, privileged night to witness. I give thanks to the universe that I was there.

As close to perfection as you can get…ALL of it…the words, the feeling, the visual, the artistry, the vocal the teamwork. Tears. I love this group, love their ethics, courage, talent…but moreover the tonic they provide to us. My deepest thanks for being and continuing to raise our lives to your world.

BEST Nightwish song ever!!! After listening to this song you will raise your standard of quality and may leave you frustrated wanting always something at that level! But there are only ONE and unique The poet and the pendullum! Thanks Toumas!

Living in America and awash in simplistic, meaningless mainstream music, where talented artists struggle to be heard, it's good to know that there are places where a band like Nightwish can be heard and appreciated. More thoughtful, brilliantly created music makes a difference in the world. We need more.

right the nfl needs to pay nightwish 100 million to fly in and perform ghost love score, greatest show on earth and everdream at the superbowl halftime show to show the united states what an actual band is

that would be great but the average American has an attention span of about 3.6 seconds or the equivalent of my cat. So this doesn't work here. There are a lot of good American bands. To bad they are getting old. I remember going to see Dream Theater for their 20th anniversary tour over 10 years ago. I still have tickets for Symphony X for May for their 25 anniversary tour. American music is good. You just need to get past the pop garbage.

Very well said! I'll listen to Nightwish on my motorcycle or in my truck with other people and they'll breathlessly ask me "wow who is this?" I've listened to them since Tarja and Floor with NW is a match made in heaven.
