This is very good. But how will it apply to those who is not doing a "new" wiring? Let's say they just want to add marker lights. Do they just tap the wire that connects to a marker or attach another relay? I hope my question is clear.
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 4 жыл бұрын
It depends. Some OEM modules cant handle the extra load from adding marker lights so you should use the wire that goes to your stock markers to power a relay and send power to your new marker light. Most old school systems that dont use modules you should be able to just tie into the stock stuff and run new wire to the markers you want to add.

I have 1998 Chevy K1500, I have added holes and inserts for upper corner marking lights. I figured that the system was old enough that I should just be able to tap my new socket into the wires for the pre-existing lower corner socket light. However, all I ended up receiving was a steady orange light from both of them(them being the top and bottom of the left side) (though I only did the left side). Do you know if my issue is that I need a 3 pin power relay on each of my new lights (left and right)? I think that makes sense.
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 4 жыл бұрын
Im not too familiar with the newer squarebodies in terms of wiring but in the 90s the started switching to solid state modules in place of regular flashers. One work around I did on my 2014 ram was instead of wiring the new light directly to the harness. I added a 4 pin relay and pulled power for pin 85 off the lights positive wire, 86 to ground, 30 to battery and 87 to the new lights(in my case, fog lights) relays dont consume that many amps so modules seem to be unaffected by the extra tiny load added to the circuit.

Just curious. the way you wired it up. since the orange wire is the wire that would originally go to your marker light, does your turn signal work without having your lights on? or was the orange wire for a daytime running light, meaning it always has power to it?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 4 жыл бұрын
Very good question. In my current set up, the running lights and low beams are aways on. Id have to check my diagram to see if itll still work with the rest of the lights off since this is independent from the turn signals. The turn signals themselves still work like normal.

Will this only flash when the marker light is powered on? It won’t flash if you just put the turn signal on?
@NightWrencher

Thats right. Since its a marker light and not a DRL, it wont have any power while the lights are off, but you can add another relay to bypass the light switch so it can blink while its off

Thanks for a great video! I found you while trying to make my motorcycle running lamp (passing lamp in HD vernacular) be running all the time, but then become my turn signal when needed. I feel like I'm just about there, since I can make the light steady OR blink using the relay, but I can't so far do both. I have five wires coming from stock -- POS1 and GRND for the running lamp, and then POS2, GRND and SIGNAL for the signal lamp. On the relay, I have POS1 at 3, SIGNAL at 2, GRND to 1, and then 4 and 5 going to the positive on my bulb. Hooked up that way, I have my lamp running all the time, but no signal when activated. When I swap 2 and 3, I have no constant lamp, but it does signal when activated. What on earth am I missing?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thats a weird light. Usually theyre only 3 wires and you can set the low filament to running light and high filament to blinker and they would both share the same ground wire. Do you by chance have the stock wiring diagram?
@Yipcanjo
@Yipcanjo 3 жыл бұрын
@@NightWrencher Well, I'm basically consolidating two lights into one. The bike typically has (on the front) a headlight, two passing lamps, and two turn signals. I'm trying to remove the physical turn signal and make the passing lamp steady when normally operating, and then blink when the signal is activated. So....3 is constant power, and 2 is signal/blinking, correct? If so, doesn't that mean that 4 is typically activated (running light) but switches to 5 when 2 gets a signal, right?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
Ok, I see what you mean. By 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, you mean the pin #s on my ford relay right? The thing is, you would have to have the maker side of the light circuit on at all times will the bike is running or it wont work. If you want the turn signal to work while the marker light is off, you'll need to add a second relay that bypasses the first relay in order to feed the turn signal while the marker light is off

Thanks for the vid ! I’m wondering if you can help me bro . My turn signals only work properly when my lights aren’t on . When I turn my lights on and turn the turn signals on , the front ones will work but the back lights will flash like if the had turned on the emergency lights . Also when I hit the brakes they stop working at all . Another thing I noticed is when I turn on and off my lights on I gear a click noise by the stick to change wears. Do you know what the problem might be ? Thanks again
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know about your exact problem but it sounds like it could all be related. There has to be a point where all the wires intertwine like a module or the steering column or a relay box. Figure out where that is and I'm sure you'll find your issue

The only way to do that would be IF your flasher does not have constant 12v. You would splice into the wire before your flasher that would energize your relay to interupt the signal to your running lights. Its the only way that I know. If your flasher has constant 12v it wont work.

So I did what you have done, following the diagram, but I have done it for my trailer. But something os off, marker lights turn on, but they dont blink, eventhough the relay clicks. Doest it matter that the lights i am using is LED? If i remove all relay action, just hook up the blinker wire to either White wire on led and the the Black to constant 12v (igbition on), it works. Kinda. The blinking is opposit of the car, so when car blinks, marker turns off and when the car blinker is not lighting up the marker light is lid.... Do you know how to get them synchronized?

Hello. I got a 5-pin relay, but it has other numbers. Instead of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, the numbers are 30, 85, 86, 87 and 87a. Is it the same relay? If so how do I convert his numbers to those shown in the video? tnks

Only Ford uses 1 2 3 4 5. The standard way of numbering the relay is 30, 85, 86, 87, and 87a. 85 and 86 are your coil windings 30 is your main power input and 87 and 87 a are the outputs. If you wire 85 to battery positive and 86 to ground the relay should click

This usually happens when you buy the wrong bulbs. On bulbs with dual fillaments some have them switched. So just because you see a bulb has 2 fillaments doesnt mean its the same as yours, you have to buy the corresponding number for your car, if you dont know for sure, just google it and double check that you are using the correct bulbs. For example honda uses 1157 bulbs, but if you put these bulbs on a chevy you will get the effect you mentioned
@VTWINWILLY
@VTWINWILLY 3 жыл бұрын
So what happens when you turn the running lights off. That kills the power supplied to pin 3, and thus, no marker or blinking light. Am I looking at this correctly? Update: I gave it some thought, and it seams to me if you inserted a diode between pin2 and pin 3 - that only allows current to flow from pin 2 to pin 3 - the flasher would work whether the running lights are on or off. Would also need a diode coming from your running light circuit to pin3 to prevent the blinker circuit from pushing power back to all the running lights. Hmmmm . . . I may have to test that.
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
I do think you are right, the diagrams I made are only for side markers that are normally only running lights to work as a blinker so they wouldn't actually work if there's not power to them. You can add a second circuit with another relay that feeds the blinker light while the running light is off and then switches to a running light/blinker when the running lights turn on. Let me know how it turns out!

@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
You would have to add a second relay to feed it power from the blinker and then the relay would be energized by the running lights bypassing the circuit and feeding your turn signals bypassing the extra cicuit you made. Its a little confusing without being able to draw it out on a piece of paper but thats basically how itll work.My lights are on all the time as DRLs so I didnt need to add the second circuit.
