Mike is so chill. Him talking about all the little riffs that they have to compose into songs & eventually an album is so relatable. Love this podcast & the overall conversation.

I met Mike an Courtney working on a festival at Mexico City, and they are incredibly cool and humble people, it was an amazing experience, I am a total fan of the band and getting to know them just completed the experience to me, because I found out they are not only great musicians, they are great quality people as well

Great interview Nik. Spiritbox are a great rare example of a modern-ish metal band that is able to combine traditional metal sensibilities with modern pop sensibilities. Metal as a community is incredibly rigid and resistant to change. Therefore, Spiritbox creating music that challenges the confines of metal listeners is both timely and relevant. For a genre of music to survive, you need innovation and you need bands like Spiritbox which serve as a gateway for casual young listeners who may not be receptive to metal otherwise. Bands like Linkin Park, Stone Sour, Korn, Slipknot and Spiritbox are the lifeblood of the metal genre by inviting legions of newer and younger fans to replenish the genre and ensure it’s long term viability. As much as I love Slayer and cannibal corpse and Obituary, we do need gateway bands like Spiritbox to introduce metal to casual listeners in a palatable way. No one gets into Behemoth as a first pass metal band, they need something more melodic to first lure them in and then allow them to go on the journey of discovering the heavier stuff.

I love Spiritbox and I respect their willingness to try and expand their sound but everything I've heard and read from this band recently seems to be preparing the fans for another major shift in sound and Idk if you can go much further than they did on "Eternal Blue" without alienating their core fanbase. Again, tons of respect for their willingness to take the risk and the talent to make it happen but fans arent obligated to like your new shit just cause you made it. Basically I really hope they don't pull a butt rock or go full pop mainstream. Also kinda sucks that they were like "no one cared at first" when there was a die hard group of us buying all their merch, joining their patreon, and evangelizing everything they did to the point where they got the attention they have now. All this to say I hope they dont lose what made them special

I think it’s important for a band to follow their hearts creatively over all else! And I think when they say no one cared they were referring to the relative difference in fanbase in their very early days. I’m sure they’re very grateful for the people who heard them early.

They've already significantly dumbed down their sound in Eternal Blue tbh, with the exception of 2-3 songs the EP remains their best music for now imo
