Great video. Just want to throw some more info out there for anyone who likes reading novels about streetwear. I moved to Japan in '93, lived there for about 25 years, and as luck would have it I lived maybe 15min away from the original Bape shop, NBHD's first store, and got to watch the entire "Japanese streetwear" thing grow from day 1. To truly understanding Bape from an outsider's perspective is a tricky thing. Bape/Nigo never went out of their way to sh*t on Nike by blatantly copying their shoes. Yes it looks like they just said "f**k it, let's make AF1's." I get that, but that's not the case at all. Nigo didn't pull an Air Kiy and say "f*ck it, let's ride it out until we get sued." It was never Bape throwing unoriginal shade at Nike and seeing what they could get away with before the Cease & Desist orders came jumping off the top rope so to speak. You have to understand how the Japanese think to really get it. When they modify something that essentially already exists, it's their way of paying respect to the original item by keeping the original design DNA largely intact while at the same time adding the least amount of alterations possible that speak to their aesthetic preferences. Same thing went for MADFOOT circa 2005 or so with their Mad Monty's looking very much like the Air Python/Jordan 2, and a whole bunch of other models they made looking almost exactly like a bunch of different popular models across a few different brands.

Thats actually a really good example. Another example too, is the car community in japan, that sprung up companies like Rocket bunny, Liberty walks, RWB's, Veilside or god knows how many more. All with aftermarket kits meant to modify the look of an original design of a car. And all done with respects to those original companies.

I remember being a teenager when bape first popped up on my radar from seeing Pharrell wearing the hoodies and shoes! And I all I remember was that I really feel in love with bape because they gave us what Nike wouldn’t. The colors the different materials etc.. they were a lot more expensive back then compared to AF1’s probably because it wasn’t many places to get them then but worth it if you could get a pair. It’s Nikes fault that they got so big. Nike could of easily said hey you know these kids want more than just white or black af1’s and air maxes let’s try to jazz these up with color and boom..people would have tapered off of bape because Nike would have fulfilled that want

@Miren24772 жыл бұрын
Bapestas are in a whole different price range and a whole different type of buy. Not many people were going to buy an airforce but saw a bapesta and didn't buy the airforce. That just doesn't happen, and the cost of the court case outweighs that of lost customers.

I don’t think that argument has much merit, legally speaking. Imagine if some person made Nike AF1 or Jordan 4s but made them by hand, only using the best leather/materials. They’d cost 5 times the amount minimum but would still, in essence, breach design copy-write laws. Dif price point/market wouldn’t negate that imo
@Miren24772 жыл бұрын
@@truevanpencil5403 As stated in the video, copyright laws exist to prevent loss of income from a company because a potential customer went to a different company for their product. I'm not saying that Nike doesn't have grounds to sue BAPE, I'm just stating that it doesn't make much direct financial sense to pursue that lawsuit since not many potential Nike customers would choose BAPE over an AirForce 1. If anything, someone interested in BAPE but not willing to pay the hefty retail would probably turn to Nike for a good alternative.
@truevanpencil54032 жыл бұрын
@@Miren2477 I’d have agreed a decade ago but nowadays any hype AF1 is at least as expensive as a pair of Bape sta. Plenty of pairs sell way above that price point too. Maybe that’s why Nike think there is some merit in legal action. Via collabs Nike has almost normalised the fact it’s not uncommon to see collab pairs regularly exceed the price point of Bapes kicks.
@Miren24772 жыл бұрын
@@truevanpencil5403 Those are resale prices. Nike does not make any money off resale. Retail prices are around 130 for colors and 170 for collabs. The sneaker market is also down for resale, with most af1s reselling for around 100 while Bapestas are reselling for upwards of 600.

Hey man thanks for the sub and comment - I think the reason they didn’t sue was because there was no real market threat to Nike by the Bapesta in the USA - I don’t think they waited for bape to become rich - they’ve long been a successful brand - I think it’s more to do with the increase in market presence in USA and these other models that have brought the smoke

@@guccimane3731 I collect both Dunk SBs AND Sk8 Stas. OP is right. The Sk8 Sta is significantly different (and better overall) than the Nike Dunk. It's obvious that Bape used the Dunk's overall design to develop the Sk8 Sta, but that's where the "borrowing/stealing" ends. Bape has made some type of changes to basically every panel on the shoe. This will matter in court. I could see a judge siding w/ Nike on the Bape Sta, and probably the Court Sta (because it's too much like a Jordan 1 low)....but the Sk8 Sta is different enough to merit it's existence. ....but let 'em make Bape cease & desist w/ the shoes....by all means. It'll make my stack of Sk8 Stas actually hold some value rather than me buying them just because they're incredible (...and they very much are incredible). In-hand, the Sk8 Sta sh*ts on all but the most coveted/highly collectible Dunk SB collabs/quickstrikes/whatever. The Bape sneakers are made to a much, much higher standard than Nike.
