Nike facing backlash for women's Olympic one-piece uniform | NewsNation Now

Nike is in defense mode after images were released of its new women's Olympic track and field uniforms. The uniform causing controversy - a one-piece with a high-cut bikini line - has been called "skimpy" and "sexist" by some critics. Professional track and field athlete Colleen Quigley says there are multiple uniform options, but that particular piece was surprising because it was a much higher cut than she's ever seen on a uniform before.
"You don't wanna be thinking about your uniform while you're competing at the Olympic Games. You just wanna be focused on the sport that you're doing," Quigley said on "NewsNation Now."

The Olympic commitee has regulations to force skimpy uniforms on women athletes. Particularly volleyball, women's bikinis are not allowed to be more than 10cm across. That's the maximum size. Same with the European Handball Federation, they fined a team a few years ago who insisted on competing in shorts like the men, instead of bikini bottoms.

LOL, it's so great that the top half is damned near puritanical and could only offer more coverage with sleeves added. Not sure why they decided to even attempt a bottom half, maybe they are hoping for vivisections mid event or perhaps the Beaverton Boys needed to see more bush on international display in their name. Nike just cannot shake its fundamental tonedeafness when it comes to women.

That is because they over cut and over stepped the "French Cut" which works well for sitting running - dancing -warm ups...it is comfortable. This cut here is unattractive - unwaranted and without any good design appeal. Or any good reason. It's quite bizarre.

This is super disappointing that this keeps happening in women's sport. Look at the men's uniform. Clearly if a man can run and perform in that, so can a woman. This is something that belongs on Baywatch. The last thing any athlete needs is close up shots to be plastered all over the worlds newspapers of a uniform slipping off at the wrong time. This already happens in gymnastics, volleyball, and swimming, where creeps zoom in and blow up these images. Do better Nike. This should not have even been an option.

Most of the "critics" have never played sports or competed. I can tell you some women athletes have worn less. Also, athletes do and can modify their uniform e.g. tights under pants, compression sleeves, leggings, etc.

For some, dressing in less makes them feel self conscious because they know they are being sexualized. And why would you want people to watch you compete because of your body? The irony isn’t lost on the fact that she is commenting on Nike’s team USA uniform while wearing Lululemon who is the official outfitter for team Canada. Lululemon collaborated with athletes and paralympic athletes in the design and function of their uniform. Lululemon did it right.

The uniforms are great and the athletes are going to look amazing and perform well. Give them a chance they actually really look great everyone has something negative to say. Try to enjoy what you have and if you don’t like the uniforms maybe move to China or Iran you may like their uniforms better.
