Apologies. My audio levels are a bit off in a few places as my mic upgraded it's firmware sometime between my last recording and this one, which changed the audio levels on me. I didn't notice until after I recorded. I tried to level it all out in edit, but there are a few areas that are washed out, especially towards the end. Again, apologies.

I left this comment at the Ginger Runner's review of V5: I've owned these since May and here are a few impressions: - Nike's ATC outsole sucks when you're use to mostly Vibram from either the Zagama 2 or brands who mainly offer Vibram. ATC feels quite stiff and doesn't really bite into he terrain like I was hoping it would. - I can attest the forefoot feels plenty wide, but shallow as Ethan has mentioned. - I find the REAct foam to be plenty bouncy while walking, but kind of flat while running, if that makes any sense. The toe-off is sharp on V5 when compared to other versions, so when you're walking in them, it feels very abrupt. - I haven't noticed any issues with lacing as they feel pretty secure, fit-wise. - I chose the black/white/gray version and I get a lot of compliments on them when walking around town. Had Nike went with Vibram for V5, I think they'd "score" much higher than they do now. As per usual, Nike's proprietary outsole sucks IMO when compared to Vibram. I saw a leak of Nike's trail offerings for SS/2025 and it appears a majority of their trail line will incorporate Vibram, so I hope this is true.
@SagasuRunning2 ай бұрын
While I agree ATC isn't Vibran Megagrip (but what is, it's the best grip in trail, period)...you are NEVER going to see Vibram on the Peg Trail. Nike Trail is reserving Vibram for their race models VERY clearly, where the added cost and grip make sense. Given where Nike Trail outsole material has been the past few generations... ATC is a MAJOR upgrade. On a shoe like the Peg Trail it's perfectly fine. I find toe-off very "Nike" in feel (I made a video in that feel actually) which I like. I can dig off of the big toe and really can feel my grip levels. Again, it's not like a more performance trial shoe, but closer than it should be.

@@SagasuRunning Vibram Megagrip is also pretty prone to wear on roads, which wouldn't make sense on a road-to-trail shoe.

Great video! I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this shoe too. For me, the Pegasus Trail feels like a friendlier shoe compared to the road version. The lack of air units and softer foam compound really make the shoe feel much more comfortable and cushioned. I put nearly 500 miles into my pair of Peg Trail 4s and am nearly at 200 with my Trail 5s, the vast majority of which have been on the roads because they just feel that good. I'm not a fan of the road version at all, but this shoe provides me with a simple daily trainer that can eat up miles without any discomfort.

Interesting. I cannot imagine doing that amount of volume on roads in a trail shoe, even this trail shoe.... OR picking the PT5 over the P41 for road running 🤯. But hey, you found your shoe it seems. They are certainly capable. Enjoy them!

I did a lot of road to trail running in the Peg Trail 3&4, with the Trail 3 being my default running shoe at the time, topping out at 700 miles before the midsole felt dead. They made a really versatile, forgiving shoe for someone who was just starting out on their running journey. 👍🏻
@SagasuRunning2 ай бұрын
Agree. The PT3 was a big hit when it was out for these reasons. It also was the last Peg Trail with a single piece outsole (that could be swapped), I'd like to see that come back.

That was a very thorough review, I appreciated the history/background section and the recommendations for the road and trail version of the shoe. I recently got a pair of Peg Trail 4's for road, city parks, mild trails and general dry weather running and I find them spot on for the intended use. I won't run anything technical on them, I have Hoka Speedgoats for "proper" trail running.

Thanks for the thorough review & history on the Peg Trail. It was fun to learn more about it. I did go the store to try it on. I do like the fit, feel, design, and the upper. The midsole just felt a little to soft and combination with the high drop. It just didn’t feel that protective, and to low to the ground in the forefoot. Also for road there is a lot of rubber on the outsole. For the GTX version the fit and midsole felt different. The midsole felt more firm, protective, and premium with maybe react/ZoomX. The GTX fit is also more snug so would recommend sizing up 1/2 a size. I think the Peg 4 had the air unit in the forefoot, and on paper. I think I prefer that for keeping the midsole from bottoming out in the forefoot over time, more protection & better response. On the flip side, I heard Nike took the Air Zoom unit out on the Peg Trail 5 because people were complaining about hot spots and/or wanted a softer feeling midsole.
@SagasuRunning2 ай бұрын
The PT5 GTX is the same last, but it has a strobel in it that helps to seal the shoe to water and protect the foot from the Gore-tex seams, so it is considerably stiffer (same with the Peg 41 GTX). Both the PT5 & PT5 GTX are ReactX foam only. Nike Removed the Air Zoom units from the Peg Trail series way back in the Peg Trail 2. The PT4 was just React foam, like the two generations before it. There is a lot of rubber on the outsole of the PT5 as it IS a trail shoe, not a road shoe. I can do road to trail but definitely is not a shoe I'd ever recommend for dedicated road running.

I was going into a sporting goods store to look at shoes for the fall just as this video popped up so I tried it. Nice upper, good lockdown, really like the beaded laces. I didn't find it too soft at all for road to trail, but then I tend to run in higher stack shoes most of the time. I haven't put my foot in a Nike running shoe in several years and the fit was better than I remember, More volume in the toe box than I remember being my main problem with Nike shoes. All in all a pretty good shoe, though there was something about the way the cushioning felt under the ball of the foot that put me off a bit.

I have a Nike Juniper GORE TEX trail shoe, I find it very slippery on certain concrete surfaces when it's raining (maybe because of the harder rubber used?) when I use them for road running. I am looking for a waterproof running shoe that can be used when raining, this Peg looks tempting but I never go on trails.
@SagasuRunning2 ай бұрын
The Juniper is the budget trial option...it's a cool looking shoe but the materials are not great. it's also using a generic version of whatever awful outsole material Nike Trail used to use...so it's not good at all for grip in anything. I'm not a fan of waterproof running shoes in rain (your feet are going to get wet eventually and waterproof shoes don't drain at all which is a bigger issue) but there Peg Trail 5 comes in a GTX version, with a gaiter on the heel to really keep the water out.

@SagasuRunning I think you might be missing some of the history around the Pegasus Trail. I have a pair of Pegasus 36 Trail that aren’t GTX. The upper appears thicker than a normal Pegasus with some waterproofed areas and the lugs are a little more aggressive but not too many changes outside of that. No giant lugs, no full waterproofed upper, etc. Is this the first Pegasus Trail? I ordered mine in early 2020 but they were on discount as I think the newer version had already launched.

@RowOfMushyTiT2 ай бұрын
I have all these shoes and yeah the Peg Trail 5 is basically a more comfortable and cushioned Kiger 9. However it loses some ground feel and is worse on technical trails as the midsole is softer. I prefer them over the Zegama 2 - that shoe feels very clunky vs. version 1 and fit is worse too.
@SagasuRunning2 ай бұрын
Let's put it this way on the Zegama 2. A few Nike Trial pros have raced the Zegama 2 on trail...but when it comes to road or hard sections they have been switching to the Alphafly 3... so that pretty much explains it. The idea of a big mushy shoe is very unappealing for me...especially for trail use. The Nike Trail line is this; - Juniper = Budget option - Peg Trail = Road to trail/entry level - Wildhorse = All rounder trainer - Kiger = Short (sub 50k) racing/technical trail - Zegama = Ultra racing (long) - Ultrafly = Ultra racing (speed)

Agreed on the Vibram outsole, BUT... overall the feel of the Peg Trail 5 is just a flat out winner. For me, at least, the Zegama upper (maybe because of the gaiter?) doesn't feel quite as nice. And for me, the ZoomX midsole just feels too cushy. I did buy one on a decent online discount to try against the Peg, but returned it after a quick step-in. Give it a try, but I think the Zegama is a love it or hate it feel, whereas the PT5 seems to be loved by many for different reasons. Granted, the only knock against the PT5 is the sole (Nike ATC, obviously not as impressive as Vibram), but the overall combo seems to be a winner. My impression is that Zegama lovers either like high stack, high cushion shoes in general, or they plan to do very long rocky trails that need that extra cushion.
