I went with the Wildhorse 5 over the Kiger 5. For me, the fit and comfort was better. Especially in the toe box and lock down. Kiger 5 tongue was too thin for me too. I was hesitant with the stiff midsole, but it broke in quick! Plus, they truly are workhorses! We also can't forget the Wildhorse has an 8mm drop!

I tried these and the Kiger on at Dicks. I found the Wildhorse more comfortable. Felt that it had slightly more cushioning and I enjoyed the wider toebox. My only issue is the tread. I had the Wildhorse 3 GTX and while I loved the shoe, I wasn't overly impressed with the treads. They need to be made of a more durable rubber. I am currently now breaking in the Salomon Sense Ride 2.

Ethan, Love your reviews! Always informative and entertaining. I've found that you & I have different taste/needs/uses for shoes, so I've learned that if you really love something I probably won't...and vice versa. So it's kind of a reverse recommendation for me, but all good info and helpful. All to say...I love the Wildhorse 5. I've had the previous 2 versions & this is by far the best. I don't have a ton of trail experience, but I think this is my favourite shoe yet! I haven't tried the Kiger because I'm just not a low drop gal, & all the reviews say the toe box is narrow. But your reviews are always fun and informative, even if I use them backward. 😂 Congrats on the success of Tiger Claw! I heard such good things from friends who ran it. Job well done to you both!

GR - after 100 miles in these I'm in total agreement with your review. A bit too solid for my liking but still enjoy able & evidently durable. Vertical aspect of toe box is low. They are true to size but I still went half size up as they just felt more comfortable. Longer trail runs - yes, shorter runs not zippy enough and too much traction for the road!
@ts73035 жыл бұрын
Order one-half size up? (a la Wildhorse 4). Or does this fit true to size?

A bit of an odd question (open to the floor too): What running shoes would you recommend for someone wanting shoes for - trail running (but not very often) - OCR (Spartan, Tough Mudder, etc) - ‘active’ holidays (lots of walking, natural parks...) Current shoes are Nike Lunarglides, in dire need of replacement; I’m afraid I’m a heel striker, like bigger drops but willing to try something a little more ‘even’ or flatter... Thanks in advance!!

Every Nike I've tried on in the last 30 years feels bad just walking in the store. Like Punxsutawney Phil, I'll poke my head up and try a pair every year, but I never buy any. I'll check out the Kiger. Also, the bottle of Pliny The Elder in back reminds me I have a bottle in the fridge I need to imbibe before it gets old. I have a source here in the Bay area....

Hey Ethan. As always, love the reviews. I'm starting the transition to trail from road, but I'm doing it on a very tight budget. Any suggestions for trail shoes in a sub $100 category? I don't have access to some of the cool web deals as I'm up in Canada, and by the time I do the USD exchange and shipping I'm paying almost $200 for outlet clearance models.

How's the tread durability? I have the Wildhorse 4's and barely any miles on them with little to no lugs left. Great shoe but for expected more life out of the treads.

I have been thinking that maybe the Wildhorse 5 is a good first trail shoe for runners who don't have much experience. It can be used also when the route is not 100% on trails.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fit. I have worn the same size in the v3 and v4 and while the WH4 some could have argued was a little "sloppier", the new version is so tight and uncomfortable that I had to send them back. I don't have super wide feet but have always appreciated the nice wide forefoot that the WH offered. The length was the same so going up 1/2 size didn't work. Between the uncomfortable midfoot and an exceptionally cramped toe box, these were a huge disappointment.
@TheGingerRunner5 жыл бұрын
I definitely didn't have that experience. These fit me better than last two versions right out of the box. I will say the tongue looked way more exposed/wide open and gave me the optical sense that they weren't lacing tight enough, but I had a solid fit throughout.

Wildhorse 5 has been the shoe that fit me the best and Nike killed me when they completely changed by 7…great fit from the get go and never an uncomfortable moment. Was not a fan of the colours until I tried it on and thought…what? How is this so comfy?! The W 5 for women had a nice wide boot and they moved away from that leaving me and many others on the sidelines. Now I am searching for lost pairs to buy but alas…bring back the wide foot Nike! Or at least offer a B size in trail shoes 😢
