Years ago I was a teen driving to the Santa Fe,NM ski area after a big storm ...in a VW bug (4 girls plus ski gear actually fit). As we tootled up that steep road we passed many 4WD vehicles. That little bug just kept on truckin' (maybe thanks to the engine over the rear tires?) without even needing our 8:22 chains. It was memorable - everyone was shocked and laughed as we went by waving like the queens of England.

21:12 I know you don’t like the compost toilets for smell. But have you considered horse bedding pellets? That’s what we use and it only ever smells like pine and never smells bad. You don’t have to separate your urine. We have a small camp toilet off amazon we used backwards in the front seat when we camped in our Hotel Prius. And then we add a handful of pellets every time we go. So I know you could make it fit. And Honestly I love this system. So much so that we even removed a perfectly good rv toilet out of our camper to put in a bucket with horse bedding pellets. We’ve used cassette toilets , rv black tank, and compost with urine diverter in the past but this system is by far my favorite. The only toilet I might consider changing to is the one that vacuum bags it coz it would save more space so I could longer before needing empty. If you were to try it for you space i think an easy way would be to get a 3 gal bucket and luggable loo lid. Fit that in your drawer and then fill 1 gal ziplock bags with pellets and put those in around the corners. Make sure to have one bag of what I call “poo sprinkles” pellets with a little water. And your set. You can either separately bag your used paper and wipes or throw it in . When it’s full just find a trash can. I suggest always to double bag in the bucket just in case your pellet to pee ratio is off and you get a leak well ya know.

Nikki….. first of all I live in a house, not in any kind of vehicle nor do I have any kind of recreational vehicle…..BUT for some reason, I am very, very, very interested in everybody who does Van Life and all their vehicles! I admire everyone’s sense of adventure and how they can live wonderful lives in such small spaces! And with that being said, I love love-love the tour of your van. I love all your details. I love all your shout outs and I love all your game changers. This was one of the most thorough tours I’ve seen. I love your van. I love your sense of adventure and I love the fact that you included TWO dogs that needed homes into your van life!!!!! That was a huge commitment and you make it look easy. Although I’m sure it’s not that easy. Congratulations to you Camper and RV on your wonderful life of adventure! Congratulations on taking such good care of your health with your exercise-routines and game changers on your van that you added to do exercise and the way you eat so good! You are the BOSS!!!!! ❤ Bless you and ALL your travels!!!!!

I love your van, it’s so well thought out and equipped. As far as aesthetics, it’s serene and orderly, simple and pretty. It doesn’t look like a mental hospital at all, multimillion dollar mansions have grey and white decor and fixtures. You can always add color as you have with the bedspread. The main thing is you have a great set up with everything you need. Loved the tour with all the mechanical info and decisions you had to make. Thank you. Safe travels always. XOXO to the puppers.

Lifelong resident of The Mojave desert. Also did my fair share of off-roading. You are stumbling upon The best way to off-road. You go as far as you can in two-wheel drive until you get stuck then and then apply four-wheel drive. That one rule will keep you from getting yourself in deep trouble when you're in the middle of nowhere.

I do not yet own a van but we have a 31 foot cruiser boat and so many of the systems are similar and needing to use every inch of the space is KEY. I love little hacks to help with it. We recently go rid of our typical cooler and bought a Ryobi battery powered cooler that switches from shore power to batter as soon as we unplug. No more nasty water from ice bags in the bottom. FYI we do not live on our boat full time we just take it out for a few days at a time but little changes make for a more comfortable time.

Like you, I have a list of non-negotiables and wants, so thank you for explaining your thought process on your choices. 😊 Big Fan! I love the van conversions and have been watching this evolution of this lifestyle for 6 years, enjoying entertainment, all sorts of nature and wildlife, community, freedom, affordability and stand-up citizens responsible for themselves, in all walks of life, thriving to survive. I am proud of those Van Lifers who have been successful, as depicted in all the car and van-lifers telling true stories - to compare the lies the Govt believes because of residents complaining of RVs in NY streets. They are in every city but...not everyone has an option. My following comments are hoping to raise conversations about a previous troubling NEWS report that the some Govt responds by planning to make a law making it illegal to park on NY streets. It is not just NY. So the lawmakers are dense to think if they just make a law to ban RVs and cars to stay off the street to sleep, where are people going to go? How about you help with solutions. PEOPLE AND GOVT WORKERS....MANY OF YOU COMPLAINING ARE IN DENIAL OF REALITY! OH SURE, MAKE NEW LAWS THAT MAKE IT HARDER ON EVERYONE, AND CLOSE YOUR MINDS ABOUT HOUSING CHALLENGES, SECLUDING THE RV LIFE AS NOT AN OPTION DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. Bandaids to huge disasters are not solutions to issues. I dream of being in charge. First I would make every govt worker forfeit their pay. Then move out of their home. Give up their kids after a week for endangering them. Then beg for food, and find a warm place to sleep. And help is only from handouts....good luck. Now make a set of laws that solve the problems, not cover up the problems. Long befgore the border was opened, many more Americans were and are still choosing this option to live in a car, a van, or an RV, and others were still fighting homelessness, living in tents, and there needs to be places created for these new options. It is a huge, huge issue of affordability. Please be thoughtful and creative, helpful and speak up to our representatives. Make a huge trailer park and help them set up house to live affordable. It is not just New York. Someone make the truth known all over and lets get our heads together. We all want independence. People who used to make over $50 can still find housing unaffordable. Those who are not compassionate, and have all their material things collected in their fancy homes and apts, will one day face an unsurmountable problem whether it is a medical issue, a natural disaster, traume leading to mental instability, or a financial disaster.

Can I suggest something about 4x4, you said you are on trails with jeeps and SXS, and you are still in 2wd, if you are in a rough off-road environment you are so much better off using the 4x4, it takes some of the load of the rear diff and evens it out over all four wheels, in the long run it will save you a diff repair or even an axel. Just a suggestion.

I feel as tho the functionality and color choices of the built-ins are right-on -- it still allows you to pick colors for your bedding, seat cushions, pillows and throws, etc and change them out whenever you feel like it, instead of trying to paint over colors you might get eventually get bored with -- given the material, that might get expensive as well as being time-consuming. And as you point out, traveling with pets makes you want material that can easily be wiped down. I also appreciated how you talk about items you added and regretted later as not being particularly useful to you these days. If anyone is looking into vans for long-distance travel or shorter jaunts, those details matter, especially, as you say here, because built-to-order vans might only be used for selected periods of time -- like for a year of travel or a few times a year. I also think your experience of travelling in different vans, along with Hotel Prius has given you insight that others might not have and will be useful if they might want to someday make this kind of investment. And this made me smile too -- Camper's and Rodney's dog hairs do indeed make your van a home!

I like how they did the air conditioner.. I'm going look into this for myself.😊 .. some good tips, i plan on living in a diy high-top to get a feel for what i need & what i need to hire out on. I want some creative & also convenient aspects, as i will be living full-time as well. I will probably add as i go, to see what is really to my liking. I have noticed, that sometimes in life, it can take several tries to get things to specifications. Such is life. .. I think i favor a rear bath & closet/drawer storage. .. I also would like to incorporate cedar = love the smell & other benefits.

While all of that is cool and all. IMO. the very best part of your van is two things. Camper and Rodney.

I built out a 4Runner and had a rooftop tent. I decided that I really wanted a Sprinter before my first 4Runner trip. After a 3 week trip in the 4Runner, I decided to ditch the RTT and build the Sprinter. It’s so annoying to only be able to sleep in forests (West Coast) or campgrounds. No bathroom, etc.

Great information today. Your videos are the best. The panel for the lockers that your dogs bump sometimes. Have you thought of putting a Plexiglas panel on top of it. Could just sit on top with Velcro or be hinged. Just something I thought of. Thank you.

I like the way the interior of your van looks. It's nice and light, and durability is super important. So the toilet, surprising that you don't like it. There are some really cool ones that aren't messy. Seems like an incinerator would use a lot of power. You do have a lot of power, though. It's a nice van. Thanks, Nikki.

I’ve met many beautiful people doing this full time over the years. It’s an amazing lifestyle but not for everyone so for many it’s hard to believe since it doesn’t align with their goals and interests. Tho when it comes to content I will say it’s split lol- You can usually tell by the content they’re putting out, the maintenance, functionality and really just common sense and their knowledge based on situations they’ve been on, if they are in fact full timers :-)
