Rimsky-Korsakov is a name I keep hearing but I never really assigned much weight to. That has changed!

Einfach wundervoll!

Korsakov has been a favourite composer since childhood, to me he is the magician of the orchestra, I have thought very highly of him and love his style, and his eastern encounter of traditional classical music. Thanks for uploading.

Thanks for that. I can't believe that is not more popular than it is. There is some great orchestration going on there. Maybe RK struggled a little with symphonic form, but its bristling with ideas. ...

I’m in the middle of reading his autobiography titled “my musical life”. Apparently, he composed this without any formal compositional training or even the knowledge of what the chord names were! It’s surprising that it holds together so well.

Thanks a lot! Would you consider including in your plans any of Rimsky Korsakov’s operas (ec the golden cockerel)? They’re a bit underrated nowadays and except the suites, score uploads of complete operas don’t really exist (even though copyright might be a reason).

This sounds so much like Schumann. I thought Korsakov and Co. didn’t approve of Tchaikovsky sounding so much like the Westerners…

A absolute high skills symphony, like Beethoven. But the shortcoming are obvious, each movement is almost the same mood, lack of imagination.

Rimsky was a naval officer when he wrote this as a student of Balakirev who supported and helped him with the orchestrations and ideas. Rimsky-Korsakov appeared on stage in uniform to acknowledge the applause (regulations demanded that officers remain in uniform even when off-duty). Seeing him, the audience was surprised a naval officer had written such a work. He wrote this while on a world tour, mailing movements to Balakirev from different harbors and places he was at the time. Seen in this light it is a remarkable achievement. In 1884, Rimsky-Korsakov thoroughly revised his First Symphony. He transposed the key of the symphony itself from E♭ minor to E minor, to enable orchestras to play the work more easily than had previously been able and allow the work to become a repertory piece for student and amateur orchestras.

This is a very respectable symphony, just the kind of thing the establishment wants you to create. It has everything except magic.

If you read the info you will see that Rimsky was still a naval officer and wrote this off and on at sea, as an exercise with help from his teacher Balakirev, sending finished parts in the mail in the next port, getting replies about previous advancements, etc. etc. Seen in this light the magic is in the connection between teacher and student, as it should be. The one of support and trust.

@@bartjebartmans You have a good heart, but the piece is still just so-so and, dare I say, perfunctory.
