After having seen this on KZbin, I went out and bought the DVD, which comes with a recording on CD of the Shostakovitch 24 Preludes and Fugues, written for her, and which was the music she was plying when she suffered a brain aneurysm in concert, from which she never recovered.

Amazing - she reminds me of my piano teacher many years ago - RIP Florence Scholl Cushman, of the Chicago Symphony in her younger years. I never appreciated her true talent and knowledge. My loss.

I wish the Copyright Holder would kindly UNMUTE the audio on this video. This recording is not available for purchase on Amazon, does not appear to be for sale, so what profit is there in withholding this amazing recording ? I would buy it if it were available. At least post a site where this recording can be purchased, if it seems advantageous to Copyright Holder to MUTE the beautiful recording.

Extract from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: With the fall of Communism, she found herself in demand internationally, making several concert tours to Europe and the United States. She was known to have had an immense repertoire. On November 13, 1993, while playing the Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues at a concert in San Francisco, Nikolayeva was stricken by a cerebral haemorrhage and was unable to complete the performance. She died nine days later, on November 22.

Typical KZbin nonsense! If this is unavailable in the U.S. sound should NOT be muted.

It's okay. I find this concerto not well written for the pianist's hand, though it's my favourite of all. Not to mention that piano playing is not among the least complex activity that human being has invented. I think Nikolayeva's musicality surpasses all that, especially when we turn on our intuitive listening.

At some point, you have to let go. Her lyricism aside, there is little to be said about her technique which obviously lacks the bravura element of this concerto. Why did she perform this at her age? I simply do not understand.

I guess you didn't listen to the cadenza or listened but didn't really hear!
