You're "reframing" out of contest. Women had more rights in 1750 in America than most women elsewhere. Hannah-Jones seems to be delusional. What a sorry excuse for a journalist. She positively drips with self-pity! Isn't it convenient to claim victimship? It releases one from acknowledging one's own failings. "Nobody wants to get over slavery like black folks". What b*&@#$t! According to the NYT, the 1619 Project was authored by "journalists" and "poets", not historians or academics. There has been strong criticism of aspects of the 1619 Project by very well respected historians and scholars like James McPherson, Gordon Wood, Victoria Bynum, and James Oakes.

Yes, precisely. Radical elements of the left primarily tend towards a utopian historicism. Humanity’s arrival, the end of history through a sort of gnostic religiosity/political religion of a chosen collective group overcoming/destroying the otherized collective. They abandon liberalism almost entirely And subjugate the individual to the state (or term of collectivist radical power) forgetting the ultimate minority is the individual. Accordingly concepts like individual liberty, the virtues and values necessary to prosper as liberated individuals, and the symbiosis of virtue, character and values to maintain, develop, enhance liberty. Liberty and virtue grows and feeds each other - they fracture with inertia, consistent and constant dedication to liberty is essential. Liberty is not synonymous with choice, it’s provides choice but so much more. The radicals a priori position is always a straw man misapprehension of liberty.

@@utubemewatch I think the problem is that some social justice scholars want people to think that there are only two choices to pick from: we can are either be a denier of racism or assume that racism is everywhere and the sole explanation behind highly complex human behavior. I think this is a false dichotomy: one can believe that racism exists and understand that it must be addressed without having to assume that it is omnipresent. Those who believe in the omnipresence of racism and who present the false dichotomy simultaneously want to center the archaic and mostly useless construct of race in every interaction; and by doing so they are reinforcing race-based categorizations and diluting the individual. What is the stance those of us on the 3rd group ought to take? We want to address and defeat racism, push for a more just society, but do not believe the alternatives presented by social justice scholars will yield the desired results (quite the contrary, actually). Morally, we need to speak up.

But what is her EVIDENCE that SOME colonists fought for independence in order to retain slavery? I’m not arguing the legacy of slavery. Or it’s continued relevance. As a historian, I am saying you have to have evidence for such an assertion, you can’t say that’s a reason for the fight for independence unless you have historical evidence. And how could our fight for independence be related to British abolitionism when the Brits didn’t even deal with slavery until the 1800s.

The Intolerable Acts was probably the biggest reason for the Revolution, but it was really just the final straw on the camels back. There was much animosity towards the Brits going all the way back to the Salem Witch Trials, where many people started to realize the Brits were just stealing land from people and executing them. They realized every deal done with Mother Britain, was a raw deal, in which the colonist would not be treated fairly. It had nothing to do with slavery. But you already knew this. I'm just venting.

Since you said you're not American, you need to ask questions instead of making assumptions about us. And the "one-drop rule" was just some bullshit made up by slavemasters to separate mixed (now called biracial) black people from dark-skinned black people to create a wedge between them. @ - you sound very ignorant. American slavery wasn't just slavery. There was an innate hatred and racism behind it. The one drop rule is proof of this. Even after 200+ years of legalized slavery, there was still the 100 years of legalized segregation, lynchings, and institutionalized oppression. You need to educate yourself on American slavery before you start comparing it to others because I assure you, American slavery was in a class of it's own. The same laws that were used to oppress slave, continued on to oppress Blacks after slavery ended. It wasn't until 1960s - where Blacks gained legalized equality through the Civil Rights Movement. And I say "legalized" because though Blacks may currently be equal in the eyes of the law, in practice that is a different story. You need to educate yourself on these significant nuansces specific to America before running your mouth on matters you clearly know nothing about.

@@merona1546 " There was an innate hatred and racism behind it" how can you even use the word ignorant if you don't know how to speak properly?. Do you know what innate means?. If it was "innate" why didn't the English continue with the trade?, or the Germans or the French?. Where is that "innate" quality? The only reason why Africans were being bought it was because another Africans captured them to sell them to English captains in the ports of Africa (the British colonization started centuries after the slave trade materialized). The English wanted labor, and they used the Irish and anyone that was in a position of weakness (as the Romans did with them before, as did the Saxons who raped and conquered them (they became Anglo/Saxons), the Vikings raped and killed Brits too and of course the Norman French who actually the English nobility speaking Norman French for 400 years (that is truly a humiliation). The Brits were completely decimated through history. We all did). There is nothing special about slavery in America, except that i was brief and in the end they decided to live together, regardless of people like you whining, you are all Americans today. Can you quote what they said exactly? I would love to see these, then compare it with what Nikole herself and the book have said.

All these people in the comments claiming that she's "rewriting" or "lying" about history have no understanding of the nuance of history as a discipline and the politics that go behind the narratives we tell. Providing truths that have previously been hidden isn't warping history. It's helping to complete our understanding of it, and that is imperative in understanding ourselves.

tell you what. you do a little research yourself , won't take a minute. just google thomas jefferson and his view of slavery. in 1772 on a committee with patrick henry and lee ( r. e.'s father) and others who petitioned the king to free all slaves in the new world ( another committee in new england did the same. the petition was rejected. this is a guy that the liberal idiots attacked in charlottesville. if you want to believe something, go ahead, don't talk about hidden truths because you want to believe lies.

bigbadbum1 tell you what, there are ways to talk to people without approaching conversation in a condescending manner you absolute ding dong. I study history and am very familiar with how Thomas Jefferson's first draft of the declaration including a condemnation of the king fit allowing the proliferation of slavery in America and other colonies. Does this past excuse him for continuing to own slaves? For having a sexual relationship with his women slaves? Or his contribution to eugenics with his pseudoscience race equation? Does the work of Robert E. Lee's father negate the fact that he owned hundreds of slaves and attempted to defer their freedom?

bigbadbum1 Acknowledging that they may have initially held anti-slavery views does not excuse the fact that, overall, they did much more to reinforce slavery on institutional levels as political figures. Do you expect me to weep for the depth of humanity Hitler showed in all his photo ops with young children? All of a few instances of good prove is that they were three dimensional people--big whoop. Don't try to turn them into models of abolitionism when the weight of history and their very own words weigh against them.

bigbadbum1 listen, I deal mostly with the reconstruction era and quite honesly am not fond of studying the revolutionary war, but you're ignoring too much lmao. Like the impact that somersett v Stewart had on slaveholder's stance on revolution--some saw it as pro slavery (not entirely true) which kept them neutral to the revolution or loyal to the British but many others saw it opening a path for the abolishment of slavery (also not entirely true) and became pro revolution. Even more important than that, the impact of British General Dunbar's proclamation that enslaved Black people could join the British side to secure their freedom? Even the bare fact that Jefferson took his initial anti-slavery passages out of the declaration? You'd have to ignore many salient aspects leading up to the American revolution to ignore the role slavery played in it.

bigbadbum1 *Google just told me that apparently the British General was named Dunmore, not Dunbar. Whoops, guess I need to brush up on my revolutionary history. By the way, I think you may want to consider doing that too. Hannah-Jones is far from the first historian to mention the importance of slavery in the revolutionary war. Since you encouraged me to do my own research and cited the most basic superficial facts, I will in turn encourage you to actuallt do an archive dive about the points I mentioned. Or, you know, just use basic reasoning to consider why Jefferson left the issue of slavery out of the declaration if he and others didn't hope to preserve it. Either way, prove you have more basis than a 9th grade American history class before daring to acuse someone else of not having an incomplete understanding of something. Good day sir 💃🏾

All History is a process of interpretation. "The Lost Cause" was a specific doctrine of historical interpretation (supported by a selected subset of facts) that was introduced by Southerners after the Civil War to benefit themselves. It has been accepted as "fact" and taught ever since. Facts by themselves do not determine history. Context, interpretation and sense-making are equally important. Anyone concerned about history being rewritten has never actually studied history. History is constantly being rewritten as new facts come to light. That's what history is.

Yes the civil war was about slavery but there is evidence that before America existed, most European countries refused to accept slavery as legal. America was in direct violation of those laws when forming a country that was built by slaves.

Salim Sivaad I acknowledge that yes, Lincoln was a product of his time which was a racist society. However, he was nonetheless a vital player on the road to racial equality in America and his views evolved as he spent more time with figures like Frederick Douglass. He was not perfect, but he was a transformational leader for his time and believed that African Americans should be held to the same rights detailed in the constitution, and he eventually directly contradicted his remarks from 1958.

Salim Sivaad three days before he died he expressed support for black political rights. As I said his views evolved over time and we always tend to look at history through the eyes of the present. Yes he held racist views during his life. But he opposed slavery since the beginning of his life and his views continued to evolve. He would have continued to evolve had he not died so suddenly. I’m not saying the man was perfect but he was a pivotal step in achieving black equality and to say that he was against eventual black equality is not true. He was the one who chose to make the war about slavery and it was him that forced through the 13th amendment. These are also facts that are well documented.

Salim Sivaad so he is not to be credited if he changes over time? He is to be beholden to his earlier views? He did hold all of these views at one point but he changed over time. He did initially believe in colonization but relented and supported citizenship for black people. He wasn’t as advanced as some of his compatriots like Thaddeus Stevens. But you make gains one step at a time in a divided congress and country and that’s what Lincoln was doing. Hell if he was such a racist why would Obama launch his campaign in Springfield and be sworn in on Lincoln’s Bible? Nikole says that we declared independence to keep slaves which is not true. If you won’t take my word for this, then look into the letter that 5 of this country’s most renowned historical scholars have sent detailing the inaccuracies in the 1619 project.

@Salim Sivaad Lincoln was a racist slave owner, the civil war was never faught over freeing slaves, it was faught to prevent succession from Tyranny again. He established a more power federal government and linked it to the banking system. Her analysis put slaves as this high role in economic activity which is fairly not true. Sure Southern states had more slave activity but the North was highly more productive in terms of technological advancement. And they didn't have much slavery, they were normal businesses and to put slavery at the centerfold is disingenuous to real historical context. It's simply propaganda to promote a political agenda against capitalism which we do not have. America is Fascist corporatism sponsored by the state, and people vote in these oppressors and fight over manufactured hate. I was under the impression that racism was dead the media sure seems to divide people, maybe that's why i feel that way. I choose not to watch the brainwashing box.

There is no such thing as a "good" man or a "bad" man. Good and bad are things we DO not things we ARE. Each day we arise and create the good/bad actions that will define us. . My people got there around 1650. They were Quakers. However, though I do not have "white guilt" I do have white ... shame (which comes from a deeper place) that my race is so fragile when it comes to self awareness. I feel shame for my race that so many prefer fairytales to facts (self deception is a universal human trait in all races, but here I am only speaking about my own). I feel shame that after all this time we still lie about history and canonize our founders as "good" men. We are not toddlers individually or as a nation. It's time to fearlessly open our hearts to TRUTH. Thank you 1619 project for bringing light to darkness. Brutal, unflinching honesty is the only way forward. The fragility of "self" concept may make truth painful, but the pain will fade. The TRUTH will remain.

What she says about black people fostering their freedom is really only partially true. In Massachusetts, starting with Quock Walker, slaves could sue for their freedom citing "all men are created equal" and Christianity, and all of them who tried succeeded in their freedom even though slavery was still legal. HOWEVER, she ignores that juries were comprised of WHITE people who looked within themselves and deemed slavery immoral EVERY time it was brought to court. I only point this out because we shouldn't look at history as which group did what as an exclusive thing. History is dynamic. Multiple groups of people contributed to everything in their own way. We don't need to overcorrect to say black people actually exclusively did this thing or the other. Although it shouldn't matter, no I'm not white. I'm brown.

“The American Revolution was fought in order to maintain slavery”- Future History Books written by Nicole Hannah Jones, after all monuments of Washington, Jefferson, Grant, and every other president are torn down (which she condoned). After all, even if you were a white man present during slavery, you were complicit in slavery (even if your work laid the foundation for its abolition or you directly fought against it like Grant) and if you lived during Jim Crow you were complicit in that, and if you were alive during the era of microagressions you were complicit in that. Any history that portrays any European descendants or their culture or struggles in America favorably is white supremacist wrongthink and must be dismantled.

You know, as I am hearing about t his bogus view of American History, I can't help, since this is June, thinking about June 1944. An American General, Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, while getting ready to launch the Allied forces on the Continent of Europe, he carried on his shoulders the weight of the entire war effort. On his word America and much of Western Europe was either going to survive or die. The lives of hundreds of thousands of troops rested upon the command to go. If he made the wrong decision or if his plan was off just a little, the future of America rested with him. He carried a burden that most men will never know, but he knew what had to be done. And one better,, prior to the go order he composed a memo in which he states the full responsibility failure, if it failed was his. I don't think that any country based as you claim, and sewn in the seeds of slavery would produce a man like this. Everything that America has accomplished in its history was to liberate people just as our ancestors liberated the slaves in 1865. This whole idea id bogus, this is the greatest country on earth and your premise is totally wrong. By the way, that same General Eisenhower was, years later the first American President to enforce an order of the Supreme Court regarding desegregation when he had the military in Little Rock ensure the ability for black students to attend the white high school.

The 1% is, as usual, the richest and most powerful and the rest of us just power the machinery that ultimately brings them their wealth. Americans must not be very good negotiators. Other nations may pay more in taxes but what they receive in return is something that American Society is expected to live without - you know - like universal health care which improved the lives of every citizen IN those nations and campaign finance reform which strengthened their democracies. That is crazy. Taxation without representation is absolute in history. Read the letters sent to King George. England was still practicing slavery in 1830, as was the rest of the world. The revolution was not fought for slavery, nobody was threatening the institution of slavery at that time. You cannot rewrite history based on a single race, otherwise, why was America not started by the Native Americans, which is my family tree. Or why aren’t we discussing the Ottoman Empire having historical written record as the founding of Greece and Romania? History should be adjusted with new better information, not rewritten with no historical evidence, or backing from historians (black, white, native, not just white disagree) and taught as truth to school children.

It is indeed made and intended to rile people up. The unfortunate thing is that neither side realizes that it is purposely directed at them. We all keep being presented the "truth" as false dichotomies that are usually inversions of one another's. Subversively clear with the date chosen one a six one a nine. Why not any date in-between Columbus and now? The hypocrisy is, I speculate and fear, is that she knows the division this creates and is only a face of sinister collective. I have no enemies. Especially inherited ones. The truth and the way is not revealed through resentment Norwood It Foster so much.

wait so, 1619 is trying to look at another point of view of history that wasn’t really addressed with the hope that the education behind looking at that side of history will spark conversations and lead people to address the lack of educational coverage schools have for slavery and the impact of it? if that’s the case then where’s the issue?

The goal of 1619 is to inject sense of entitlements to various groups in America. To promote socialism and communism. And destroy conservatism. For example, reparations for Black American: 1619 is rewriting black history to emphasis their suffering, to maximize, to vilify white people. To grow hatred and entitlement in Black American. Thus they would require government to act on it. They will be making demands like reparations. What we are talking about is trillions of dollar. If government decided to act on it, which means greatly increase taxes. Resource (money) to the government, thus creating a big government. Resource= power. 1619, New York Times are not just doing this to Black American, they want to do this to every groups in America. Socialist's plan is to tell you: "You all can ask something from the government, because the nation owe you so much, you must elect me" For example: free education, free health care, free medicine, free housing, employment, high wage. Do you see the problem with that? There is simply not enough resource to be doing that, or China/ Russia/ Vietnam/ Cuba would have already succeeded. Do you see any technological innovation coming from those countries? No, because everyone in these countries is a zombie. There is no motivation for them to thrive. The state will take care of everything, but in the end, there won't be enough food or medicine to go around like Venezuela.

Start with the three false claims this makes i.e. the first that the revolution was a fight for slavery. So I guess the fact that the fighting started in Boston against British oppression by Sam Adams who never owned slaves and was opposed same with the Sons of Liberty also including John Adams this is really a stretch

I don't understand the idea that most of us weren't aware of the hypocrisy or the atrocities of our founders and our founding as a whole. We've all been well aware of that for a long long time...I think the point that is missing is you can't just discount the fact that without the actions of our founders our country would be in a very different place today...I don't know what kind of place but definitely different lol. The point is people hold the founders in such a high esteem because whether you liked them or not they are men that changed the course of our country's history. I'm all for giving a more complete history especially to our kids...some of these text books are a joke. But you can't do that with sentiment, it has to be undesputed historical fact...that is where the 1619 project has failed too many holes she needs a team of scholars to come out with something more tangible...but I do like the general idea of it

This is a misnomer. The first African slaves brought to what is now the United States was brought over years before 1619 and it were the Spanish, not the English, who introduced slavery to North America.

@Major Henry L. But the ones who were brought over here from Africa, were not Africans, they were Hebrew-Israelites, who escaped to Western Africa, fleeing from the Roman soldiers. The reason 1619 is significant, is because time for the Israelites slavery began then. They were to be enslaved, according to Genesis 15:13, for four-hundred years (400), the time God set for them because of their disobedience. President Donald Trump, signed Bill HR 1242 recognizing the end of God's term for the Israelites. Whatever hap- pens, know this people, it's getting ready to '''''''RAIN, and REIGN,'''''''' There was an old hymn my grandmother used to sing (her mother was a slave), named, ''''We'll understand it better, bye, and bye.'''' Not now, but, Bye, and Bye. When? Bye and Bye! Bye, and Bye, is almost here Repent, for your redemption draweth nigh!!

I'm a White male, late 60's, raised in a Conservative home in the South. While I disagree with some things that Nikole Hannah-Jones said, overall I agree with her. It is a fact of human psychology that, if you do not affectively deal with trauma, that trauma will be passed to future generations. This is being found in children who were sexually assaulted, we're finding this to be true in the family of veterans, research has found that some pregnant women passed their 9/11 trauma onto their unborn children, The various Black tribes were stripped of their language, culture, religion, dignity; the violence on them was a horrific experience that Whites cannot even begin to appreciate. The conversation around the 1619 Project is a way of dealing with this cultural trauma. The 1619 Project is not intended to make people feel badly about themselves. The intent is to start a more honest conversation and that I support.

Love that Trevor is able to see it from the "outside" and can ask questions that we Americans are too embarrassed to ask. Could it be that the Reconciliation Panels dealt with responsibility of action in South Africa (Germany, you too) brings a richer conversation? It's time we Americans grow up and have the adult conversations that are screaming to be had. Not just "racial", "caste" as well.
