I travelled this summer with my mother and grandmother (75 and 94) and we wore matching outfits to the airport there and back. Dark wash denim jeans, bright white T-shirts, hot pink blazers, and matching luggage sets. We could hardly make it through TSA and the concourses because of all of the compliments we received. With each compliment my grandmother would say "Thank you darlin'". We did look GOOD!

The airport slays me, I cannot believe what people wear, it is so easy to look clean, neat and stylish, it's seems like so many people just wear pajamas. I for one hope that many people take these tips and try just a little harder, your life will change. Dress for what you want to achieve whether it is a job , a relationship, whatever. When I fix myself up every day I feel so much better about me and the world at large. Great video!

*Isn’t belly fat the reason a lot of women end up doing frumpy,* because it hides their bellies? A lot of these tips, though great, accentuate the waist, so they won’t work for these ladies (tucking a shirt in would especially be unflattering for them). Any ideas for them? ❤
@Marinaxp1
@Marinaxp1 Жыл бұрын
Structured shirts with rounded hems and buttons look more elegant that shapeless square T-shirts and tunics while still covering the belly. The row of buttons down the front makes the figure look slimmer. Store bought shirts usually have simple buttons but it is easy to replace them with more interesting and/or better quality ones to elevate the simple shirt to a designer piece.

I have found shapewear to be essential for those areas of the body we want to minimize, whether it's belly, thighs, hips, there's a style of shapewear out there that will smooth out and minimize. Also, jewelry accents really help to draw attention to an area. finally, no one is perfect, everyone has something that they don't like about their bodies, so part of it is accepting yourself as you are, and knowing that you look the very best that you can, and guaranteed you will look better than most people you meet! Smile and know that you are more than what you weigh! :)

This is so needed, Nikol! My late father was always impeccably dressed (and smelled good too). I take after him and try to always look my best when I leave the house. People notice. My girlfriend’s son in his 20’s remarks how I am the most pulled together of all his Mom’s friends.It’s a shame that people just don’t seem to care anymore. Some friends too just can’t be bothered with makeup. A little can go a long way. I admire a well dressed man or woman. Also, I believe men are trying to hide their big stomachs hence the untucked shirt but they are not fooling anyone.

Men wearing untucked shirts to hide big bellies can have medical problems that cause big bellies. Diabetes, like my boyfriend has. He also has a heart condition. Dialysis at home causes a HUGE belly. One of my male friends has that. Anytime he goes out he wears a shirt untucked in order to be able to go out. Judge not…especially men! They just aren’t as intelligent as we are. They have at max half the brain cells we have. Medically proven fact. Google it.

Love your style! I hate going to the airport and seeing how people dress. Recently have flown quite a bit and I swear people are flying in their pajamas.....it actually depresses me to see people not caring. As for the men with their shirts untucked, I think it depends on the style of the shirt. I love my husband in his Tommy Bahama shirts but they are made to be untucked and I always think he looks great. Dress shirt is completely different - tuck that in and put a belt on. I live in Texas and I love to see the cowboys in their boots, jeans and crisp shirts all tucked in - no matter size, they all do it!!!!!!!! Looks so good on them!

I agree with most of your tips, but the one about men tucking in their shirts - on this one, let’s agree to disagree. Unless they’re suited up for work or some business or dress event, I think the tucked in shirt looks stodgy. I much prefer the cool, laidback look of an untucked shirt. I guess it’s really a matter of personal preference.

A lot of what people think of as frumpy on KZbin is actually their negative perception of larger body types. Put the same trousers on a size zero, and some influencer will rave. But on a size 16, it’s immediately tagged as frumpy. That’s why I suggest watching someone like Diedra or Beth Dijali who are not a size zero. Much more realistic for most over 50s.

@ivonav3751
@ivonav3751 Жыл бұрын
Oprah may be ample, but she also has an hourglass figure (or, at least, that's the way it has always struck me, though I don't really watch or follow her much). Nikol talks about creating a waist, and she is very good at that. She seems to be built pretty straight up and down, but being as slim as she is, the belts and cropped jackets do the job. I'm an apple shape, and a belt on me, unless there is a cardigan or some other layer over it, just serves to emphasize my lack of a waist. Ditto a cropped jacket. They look OK from the front, I guess, but horrible from the side. I am overweight, but not obese (per BMI charts), and mostly fairly well proportioned except that I gain weight around the middle, and especially my lower belly. Trying the trick of tucking in a shirttail, or even half of one just shows off the one truly unsightly part of my body. I do wear my share of tunics, but my preference is for a hem which comes down over my belly, but is cut higher on the sides. I think I dress pretty well. I do like watching some of Nikol's videos, but, face it, she could make a burlap sack look like high fashion if she strutted it down a catwalk. I have not seen her do any videos (to be fair, I have only seen a few so far, so I may be wrong) where she illustrates how her tips will make anyone look good by showing the same styles on a variety of body types.

I absolutely love, love, love that Amazon classic dress that you are modeling, and I too would have purchased it in evey color possible. It is perfect! I agree that belting it gives the style that is needed. I prefer the look of the thinner belt, but I can see how it does not cover the back elastic area. Because I am only 4'11" and plus size, a thicker belt would not personally work for me. I would love to see you do a video addressing short, plus size women, and their dressing options.

Nikol, that was spot on! I try very hard never to fall in the frumpy department. Accessories are SO important. Even my 98 year old Mom would still put on jewelry every day. A spot of lipstick, some fabulous earrings or necklace. It makes such a difference. The other thing we can do, if we have a larger stomach, is to wear a belt, but put a blazer jacket on. It hides a lot of things. I would love to see how you dress to travel abroad. What to wear on the airplane, for that long ride, yet still look stylish and comfortable. Great video!

Agree the frumpiness factor has increased exponentially in our current society. I think part of the problem is that athleisure wear has become the norm for all ages. Women have lost the art of dressing nice & feminine on the regular. I get wanting to be comfortable, and we can still look nice & be comfortable. I have a friend who is the epitome of frumpy & she claims fashion isn't important to her & it shows. But she's happy, so who am I to judge? I love fashion & feeling good in my body & clothing, so it's odd to me, but again, to each their own.

I too lived in Florida East Coast, West Coast, Keys. I realized after a while, not dressing nicely was about not wanting to get hit on by every freak and weirdo Florida has to offer. It was about the heat. It was about seldom giving a crap about impressing others. You really do need to leave your brain in a box back home if you're a Yankee. Unless you're in Palm 🌴 Beach 95% of the population can't relate to quality fashion. It just says " I have money and good taste, rob me." The other 5% remain questionable....never met a Republican in my life I cared to impress. I couldn't careless about your shoes, it's your book collection that interests me.

This is a pet peeve of mine and you stated it very well. I’m abhorred by the way people dress in an airport. Comfortable doesn’t have to mean sloppy or unkept. What does it matter how one dresses? It matters, period. Don’t underestimate the amount of beauty, grace and love one can project by making an effort to dress well. And it doesn’t take a lot of money. Ps : Nikol, I remember (I'm 61) whenever my parents took us on holiday, my Mother always dressed up & my sister & I, my Father too. I know things are so much more accessible now (flying etc) but it made everything so much more exciting & fun & made it all the more special. My stepmother was an air hostess & she said even the flight crew felt respected by people dressing "for them", up to a point. I wish more people still did. To digress: I love the fact that you have your tailor on "speed dial" , very grand. Thank you for your work, ìt is refreshing & very useful. X

Nikol, great video! My issue is my large plus size. On a limited budget, finding clothes that are stylish is really difficult. Add to that fact I am nearly 60, I just do not enjoy clothes shopping. Fun fact...my husband of 37 years can actually pick out stupendous clothes for me, but is one of those men who wears untucked shirts! Can you do a video sometime about this topic. I believe a lot of larger women would live to see that. By the way, I love how your makeup never looks like you have half a bottle of foundation on, yet you always look stunning. I am making an effort to make my cosmetics work with what I have rather than trying to look like someone else. Finally, I have so much envy for your hair! Much love from Texas!

I loved this video and agree 100%. I've always put extra effort into looking my best with clothing, hair and makeup. I see a lot of women here commenting about being overweight. I have been overweight my whole life, and am a bargain shopper too. However, by shopping at TJ MAXX, Marshalls, and looking for sales at better stores, I have been able to accumulate a nice variety of well made clothes that look good on me, without spending a fortune. I also used to binge watch “what not to wear” and learned how to dress for my body type. I will not wear leggings outside of the house and only wear sneakers to the gym or outside exercise. I may be old fashioned to some, but I'm always been told how "put together" I always look, regardless of what I weigh. It's not about impressing others, but feeling good about myself. And when I look my best, I feel my best 😍🙌🏻

Would love some tips for how to blend comfort (working from home) with not being frumpy - meaning what can look neat and professional but also serve double duty as everyday wear for a basic suburban woman in her 60's lifestyle? These past 3 years have really tanked my desire to "pull it together" and I find myself doing the bare minimum. Also - would love some tips for short women - belting is hard because I'm short-waisted and have a bust... not sure how to create a nice look that's still comfortable.

Thank you for this video. I’ve commented once before and got such an overwhelming response from your followers. My heart was so touched. I bought your berry red lipstick and started wearing a little makeup. Now my body doesn’t match my face. I’m so frumpy. 4 years ago at the age of 70 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through a double mastectomy. However during the reconstruction phase my right breast would not heal and was removed completely the left breast wasn’t completed for fear of the same thing happening. (It still has the spacer) I got a prosthetic bra but the young girl helping me added an additional prosthetic to my left side. This makes me look like Dolly Pardon. Wearing it in Texas with the temperatures over 106 degrees is complete voodoo 🥵. So I don’t wear it (long story huh?). Now I have a left breast but not a right. A belt accentuates the deformity. I don’t see how tailoring could help me at this point. During fall and winter I wear a scarf or jacket but now it’s too hot. I could use some guidance. Surely I’m not alone with this problem. Thank you for making me feel better about myself. I love you 😘
@nellie9352
@nellie9352 Жыл бұрын
Go back to where you got fitted and have them switch out the prostheses- they should’ve matched your right side to the left so that you would only be wearing one. (Medicare replaces the form every two years). If the mfr of that prosthesis makes covers, request one for your form - that helps with perspiration absorption. (I’m an RN that has been doing post mastectomy fittings since 2009.)

I have to absolutely agree with all of the tips! I know for me, I have a signature look that I absolutely love every summer, and it's a soft, midi dress in a pretty color, and then I top it with a color matching chiffon Duster. I'm tall and I can carry it. And then I love accessorizing it with beautiful jewelry and a nice summer shoe. I also absolutely agree that the i-don't-care look has become its own style, and it's really horrible, whether it's men or women; our children are seeing this and It seems that people are rebelling against what is appropriate and what isn't and the lines get blurred. I remember when I was enrolled in classical ballet school (60s) that also included charm school, we were taught that a woman looks beautiful when she cares about the details. So before you went to bed at night, we were grilled to make it a habit that your nails and hands were tidy, your stockings were crisp, as well as your hems and your slips and your dresses were always neatly hemmed and ironed. And these ideas didn't matter what size you were. Men as well should be careful about how they dress. My son who is now 40, still wears a belt and tucks in his shirts just as he was taught when he was young and, as with dress and grooming, your manners should also be impeccable because what good is a beautifully dressed woman who has a trashy mouth?😊 Another little detail: I noticed that when men wear dress shirts, they do not wear t-shirts underneath which I think is a travesty! Clean, white t-shirts protects the dress shirt from perspiration and prevents the dress shirt from looking tacky. So I absolutely agree with everything you stated. It's not about being stoic , it's about caring what you look like and what image you're trying to project in the world. Men, Women and children should reinstitute proper dress and grooming. Great discussion! ❤

My husband looks better in an untucked type of shirt, because he is rather portly. Many of his shirts are cut to be worn untucked. I, very unfortunately, am quite petite and have the shortest torso ever. I look like a sack of potatoes at 105 pounds when I try to tuck a shirt even just partially or use a belt. As much as I would love to be able to do that, it doesn't work. Tunics and shorter tops that come to the top of my hips are my go to. Living in Tampa with a "feels like" temp of 106 degrees and 85% humidity many days makes wearing an outer garment such as a sweater or blazer rather impractical. Wish I could and look as wonderfully stylish as others, but I know what looks better on my body type. Love all your videos, Nikol...and your make-up, too!

What people also fail to see is that the way you present yourself is the way others will see you and in the end effects how they will treat you... and it doesn't have to do with money necessarily, but with class... There's no need to sacrifice comfort when you travel if you find good quality basic pieces. The confidence of being nicely turned out will make people around you notice and treat you accordingly. That's a great plus in my opinion!

So many are overweight that belting and tucking seems to them that they're accentuating their area of least confidence. Flying requires going through extensive security checks that we weren't subjected to until the 90s. They want to wear things that don't require a lot of fuss to remove and put back on. Also, needing to be at check-in hours in advance, to wait in long lines and depending on time of flight, they could be sleep deprived so they plan to sleep during flight so they wear things that are comfortable. Commercial flight was something for the well heeled in its early inception and passengers dressed accordingly to their social status. I agree though, the way people dress today looks sloppy and unkempt. Thanks for the tips.

I love your premise and hints. I live where it’s so hot a jacket is usually too much. And belts can feel suffocating. I’m short waisted and belts used to be flattering now not so much. You’re on to something here. I’m wondering about your using others to model with different body types busty, hippy etc. maybe show some tailoring before and after I do think the idea of fitted vs loose is better for older women. The challenge for me is a casual yet pulled together look I have list of what they used to call glamour donts. Mostly I feel sad when I see people in cringe worthy looks. But then again I don’t understand how young people dress so dreary either.

I find a bit of tailoring, as you mentioned, makes a huge difference...if only in the way you see yourself. I am 5'2'' and find I need a 2 inch+ hem to make everything sit right. I learned how to hem my dresses, skirts, and pants after watching some styling videos and felt so much better about the clothing afterward. Some things which were just "meh" really suited me. I even began hemming my night gowns and athletic wear which may seem silly, but really makes all the difference (again, if only to me). Cheers and God bless, Nikol!

This is so great, Nicole, and thank you for saying what should be so obvious. My mother always taught me that presenting oneself in a clean and neat manner was a question of respect to others. And of course we always feel better ourselves when we make the effort. Do you find this sloppiness is worse since covid? I feel that people have lost social skills after so long living in a universe of one. There is more intolerance and less respect for others. Airline travel is certainly no longer as comfortable or pleasant as it used to be, but why diminish it even further with the flip flops, exposed hair legs (and worse) that you describe?

My husband does that because he has a bit of a belly and thinks it accentuates his belly more. As for me, I definitely cinch in that waist as it’s my smaller part and it gives that hourglass look. Love your style and advice! ❤

I appreciate all of your tips here, and I love to look stylish and feminine all of the time! I am petite, and I am always in search of new petite clothing lines! I know I can have things altered, and I have many times, but alterations can significantly add to the cost of a new outfit. If you are familiar with great petite clothing lines, I'd love to have you share them! I'd love to discover some new lines! Thank you!

I am quite tall and also need alterations on most of my clothes. It much such a difference, though.

Thank you for this valuable advice - I am voluptuous and always like to ensure I am well 'put together' since I work in a real estate office where I meet people all the time. It is difficult to know how to refresh one's look each year with the same old pieces you wore in previous years - especially when on a budget.

I went to a junior college for women in the late 60's and we were required to "dress up" to travel! No one complained about it, because it made us feel very stylish and good about ourselves. I still dress well when I fly. Today I feel just like you do! Everyone dresses like bums, and not only that, they often look dirty! Personally, I don't care to travel anywhere anymore and I don't.

Hi Nikol: loved this video as reinforcement of what I’m doing. I decided to get rid of all my boxy stuff. This is scary as my weight tends to fluctuate but I FEEL BETTER, belted, tucked, etc. and people r asking me if I lost weight! Go figure! Second thing I want to add is don’t allow your self to be shamed by friends that want to look like slobs. I’m always getting grief that I dress up too much. I’m 63, I DONT CARE WHAT YOU THINK! If I want to look stylish and more put together than the average retiree than I’m darn well going to do it! AND last but not least I travelled with my job for 35 years and have become APPALLED BY WHAT I SEE PEOPLE FLYING IN! Like I said, retired person here but when I travel I am always dressed smartly. Thanks for reinforcing that’s okay!

Because of major abdominal surgeries that area just kills clothes for me. I am overweight at 64 and I moved south 4yrs ago slipped on a pair of cowboy boots jeans and after never being a tshirt gal pretty much live that way now. My attitude is who cares. Not trying to impress anyone anymore But Nikol I think your an amazing look for what a Lady should dress like! Beautiful, thin, great hair and inspiring!! "If Only" I've been dieting for over 4 decades done with that too! 2023 I've fasted from Red meat, breads and sugary sweets! This is August 2023 and I've gained weight! So ladles if you can follow these tips do it! Much to be said for matured women still looking amazing! And put together!! Don't waste what God has persevered for you!!❤

I love all of this, Nicole. My struggle is with shoes that look halfway decent for problem feet. Can’t wear any heels and even ballet flats are often far too pointy with no cushioning under the heel and ball if the foot.

Im sure my feet qualifies as 'problem ' deformity from RA & a 40 degree shift from center. 7 surgeries & metatarsal heads resectioned & toes fused on & paralyzed. I found Sketchers pointy toe flats that I can wear comfortably and look Normal! Ive waited nearly 40 years to wear cute shoes ❤
