It's Nano Coating (Nano Crystal Coating to be exact). It's a type of coating in the lens to eliminate (or at least alleviate) lens flares and ghosting caused by strong light entering at an angle and bouncing around the inside of the lens.

thanks for clarification - I wasn't thinking of pincushion/barrel distortion. I perhaps can't express myself adequately, but I just find that with 24mm FF I have to be a lot more careful in my framing to avoid unnatural looking/ugly perspective distortion. with 28mm I can be a bit lazier in where to stand, how to hold the camera and where I have to hold it.

28mm makes a great standard lens on DX. Equivalent to 42mm. This focal length is preferred by many photographers over the usual 50mm for their standard lens choice. From a FX lens you also get the benefit on the DX crop. On any lens, the far edges and corners have more optical distortion, and reduced sharpness at wide apertures, so using FX lenses on DX works great. O well, most camera users don't get the whole DX/FX thing anyway.

Good review and looks like a very nice lens. I use the 35mm 1.8 on a DX body and I love the results from it. When I finally get a full frame body I think the 28mm will be on the shopping list too!

I really want this lens, I think more people should shoot primes. Everyone always talks about noise performance.. you dont need to go full frame - D5100 at 6400 ISO, 28mm at f1.8 at 1/15 of a second... pretty much darkness

Well Jared did review it for DX, I think he assumed (like I did on the live show) that it would be a huge lens fully corrected for edge-to-edge performance on FX, and be massive on a DX camera, but as he says in this video it's only about the size of the 18-55, and still superb. The 24mm f/1.4 is huge & hugely expensive, definitely not appropriate for DX, but this lens kind of works. Still, why not save $300 and spend it a tripod, lighting, camera bag, backup, etc etc...
@hynee
@hynee 12 жыл бұрын
I think there would be a lot of people out there looking at the 28/1.8 as an alternative to the 35/1.8 on DX, and for some it will be right in the zone. But I think for a ton of beginner SLR users, the difference won't matter except for the $300 (or whatever the difference is).
@DWM9Erfurt
@DWM9Erfurt 12 жыл бұрын
'Should be the best single prime focal length lens for a DX camera. All lenses are designed with the attempt to correct as well as possible, within the price point, the image quality all the way across the field to the corners, but in every case, the edge and corners, the outer periphal of the lens image, has some falloff of image quality. On a DX format camera, using a FX lens is actually a great advantage, provided the appropriate equivalent focal length is used, due to the hefty cropping.

AF-S - Autofocus-Silent. Uses a "Silent Wave Motor" (SWM) (ultrasonic motor) to focus quietly and quickly. Similar to Canon's "USM" technology. Introduced in 1996.

Depends on what you shoot I personally have the 50 f1.8D for like a year and I got last week the 35 f1.8G since then I haven't used my 50. Since the 35 is wider, I can get a lot more on my frame, I use it for group shots. Well, if you do a lot of group shots, then a 28 f/1.8G would be cool too Its a new lens, so there might be not much of comparisons yet. But if you just have the money to buy the 28 f/1.8G, go for it! :D It all just comes back down, to the question "What do i shoot?"

Depends on what you need to shoot. If you're a birder/wildlife photographer, you'd probably want that monstrous 600mm. If you're a street photographer, you might like something around 50mm or possibly as wide as 24mm.

Lens focal length does not determine perspective, not at all. Distance from the camera to the subject or subjects determines the perspective. If a certain focal lenth is your preference, that is another matter. Distortion is also not a function of focal lenth either, but of lens correction. A 24mm lens can have LESS distortion than a 28mm, depending on the lens formula.

I will be getting either a D600 or D800 very soon, and am a big fan of Portrait, environmental portrait, street and landscape photography. As far as environmental portrait and street photography go as a priority for my interest in a wider lens, would you recommend this? What am I gaining/losing (aside from the 1.8 and Nano Crystal) between this and a 24 or 20mm while avoiding the more expensive $2000 lenses?

I think Jared attitude is if you're shooting DX, you may as well get the 35, same thing for less money. I asked about using this lens on DX in one of Fro's live shows about 1 week ago, and he and Adam were almost aghast, they really don't think it's appropriate for DX. I guess if you had the money and you only wanted that one more lens, or if you had a specific plan to upgrade to FX & would like a 28, it might be good, but otherwise not. I think it could make a spectacular DX normal though.

You need 50mm on FX to get the similar angle of view as 35mm gives on DX, and this 28mm lens is MUCH wider. Look at the AF-S 50mm F/1.8 (1.4) G.

based on the images that you took, it looks like the perfect street shooter. Nice mix of near 'macro' performance to portrait but still decently wide. I can't see myself buying this lens, but I can see lots of uses for it. I really like my manual lenses, so I'd pick up the old 20mm 4 AI before this. Probably has similar if not better performance..and only $250 or so retail. cheers.

According to the lenses I mentioned above and also the fact that dx cameras have a smaller angle, which one do you think is a better feet as my next lens to buy, a nikkor 28mm f/1.8 or a nikkor 24mm f/1.4?

Jared, considering dropping the 24mm 1.4 I own right now and reinvesting in a 28mm 1.8 and a 50mm 1.4. My infatuation with ultra-wide shots is dying and I think something a little tighter would be good. But how does the 28 compare to the 24 in terms of build and image quality?

Hi , Jared can you help me which one better 28mm 1.8G or 24mm 1.8G? I shoot mostly wedding photography. And i'm using D810, which means i can crop to DX image area, so 28 become 42 and 24 become 35. I want to know which one better in terms of sharpness,faster AF, and Distortion? please let me know what do you think

Imo the 28mm is a better option because it's an absolutely amazing sharp lens even at 1.8 and you'll get less distortion than 24mm. For weddings 24mm's distortion can become a bit too much on people

Not to the sensor but to the viewfinder. Thats why you can hear the mirror flapping up and down along with the shutter when you press the shutter button. because mirrorless cameras have no mirrors they must always use live view or a super high res electronic viewfinder.

Saying that 42mm is not as "special" as 28mm is also an absurd statement. In fact, there is nothing special about 28mm on FX, being so close to the 24mm. But it does approximate the ideal standard lens (by formula) for DX. Standard lens was originally and traditionally defined as the mm equal to the diagonal of the film format (or sensor format for DX) . With film format at 24x36mm the diagonal is 43.27 mm, and the 28 mm lens comes closest of any Nikon available, to bening a standard lens.

Yo Fro. I searched your videos and couldnt find one on Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm DX lens. I have the D7000 which is weather sealed and I want to know if the Nikkor AF-S DX lens are weather sealed as well. I just went out to my local jetty and took photos of waves crashing from Hurricane Sandy. Could you explain weather sealing and tell me if I was a fool for getting out into the extreme weather with my D7000 and a Nikkor 18-70mm 3.5-4.5G ED DX? Thanks Fro.

Well, I have tripods, lights, bags, backups, etc. already, and a 35mm AF-D, and a 35 AF-S 1.8, but until today when my 28AFS arrives, no top quality highly corrected standard-wide DX lens. The 24 AFS would have been great, but at three times the money for only 2/3 stop faster, not worth the money. This 28, on DX eq. 42mm, and with the latest sharpness correction, especially with not using the extreme edges ... well, soon.
