froknowsphoto.c... Click Here to download the RAW Files and read the rest of my thoughts.
This unboxing and sniff test at Allens Camera started off like many of the ones I have done in the past. This time around it was time to unbox and sniff the new Nikon 35mm F1.8G ED FX. This lens is priced at just under $600 and I am here to tell you if I think it is worth spending the money.
Like many of my previews I take sample images and allow you to download the RAW files for yourself to pixel peep as much as you would like. Being that this is a preview and I am just giving my first thoughts on the camera I generally look at the sample images while I am at Allens.
What happened this time was slightly different. I took sample images with the new FX 35mm and noticed at 1.8 a ton of vignetting. Now many of you know that Nikon has a 35mm F1.8G for the dx cameras and I personally own one. That lens is very interesting, it is meant for the DX but you can use it on the FX with pretty good results.
Since I noticed so much vignetting with new lens I figured I would compare it to the older version that is not even meant to go on the FX cameras. What I found was at 1.8 there was more vignetting as expected with the DX that you can slightly correct with lightroom.

mohamed salah In what back water of the world do you live where you can't try out a lens for an afternoon? This is a quite normal practice. And anyway, If you can buy the lens, why can't put down a deposit if the seller demands it?? That makes no sense...

I love my 35 1.8G DX. I know Ken Rockwell doesn't like it, but who cares what he thinks. The DX version is such a great lens for the price. Probably my used lens next to my 12-24 f/4. Honestly, from this review..I don't see much of any improvements over the DX version besides the less vignetting on a FX. If I was going to full frame, I'd rather get the Sigma 35 1.4 art series and its not that much more.

I have both 1.8g 35mm DX and 1.8g 50mm. Although the 35mm very nice and is worth its money, I strong feel that there is absolutely no other lens under $1000 that can give you the results of the $250 50mm. It can compete with lenses much pricier than even that and its FF. Simply astounding. If you can find the extra space use the 50mm.

If you want a lens suitable for general purpose shooting on DX at this equivalent focal length, you are either going to need to drop a couple of big ones on the wonderful 24mm f/1.4G (36mm equivalent on DX), or, the brand new 20mm f/1.8G ED lens (which is already generating a lot of plaudits for its sharpness and performance). Get either of these and, IF you are planning to upgrade to FX at some point, you already have yourself a beautiful very wide FX lens that you don't need to sell/ replace. For 50mm equivalent, I would still spend that little extra for the Sigma Art lens: I have one and love it (sharpest 35mm I have ever used). Though I am really unhappy with myself at the moment as I bought it very recently, dropped it on my office floor, and though all the glass/ body is fine, the focus mechanism jammed as a result of the fall.... Now on its way to Sigma for fine surgery and I am just hoping the repair bill is not too steep :-(
@Epoque99
@Epoque99 10 жыл бұрын
At this focal length, for FX, there is only one autofocus 35mm lens you can consider, and that is the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art. Superior to both the Nikon and Canon variants, streets ahead of this f/1.8, you get fluorite and special low dispersion (SLD) and 2 x aspherical elements in it, focus ring is real smooth, build quality is really nice, and boy does it take beautiful images. Bokeh on the Sigma is beautifully creamy too (it isn't on th straight bladed Canon f/1.4 or the Nikon f/1.4). The new Sigma lens breaks all the rules: a lens that is HALF the price of the big boy offerings, yet offering superior build, optics, performance, and it's even much better looking a lens (if that matters to you!). Steer directly to the Sigma stand, and get the 35mm f/1.4 Art lens: it is the best, and, you save yourself a lot of money which is a bonus!

It's funny because this is one of the hottest lenses right now, even tons of people are selling their sigma 1.4 to get the nikon (because of the weight and price), maybe if you'd tried it like you should have you wouldn't be hating so much on this lens

That amount of vignetting on a $600 lens is unacceptable, imo. And there is hardly a noticeable difference in image quality. Might as well save your money and get the 35mm f/2.
@MattisProbably

Oh and about how the lens feels: I always distinguish between weight and how it feels. For example, I think it is a good thing when an expensive piece of equipment isn't very heavy. Makes it easier to use and as long as the image quality is there I don't care how much glass is in there. As long as it feels great that is good enough for me. For example, I don't like that this lens costs 600 bucks, only has decent image quality (judging by your samples) but still only has a plastic body. They could at least have included some metal parts in the lens casing (outside of the bayonett of course) but a $600 all plastic lens doesn't sound very nice to me.

I use a 35mm 1.8 dx on my D7000 almost every day. It's my go-to lens. For $200, you can't go wrong. I bought a 50mm 1.8 before the 35, and I wish I had skipped the 50mm altogether. It's great for bokeh, but the crop sensor turns it into a zoom lens. On our sensors, the 35mm DX is the bomb.

Yep, I also bought the 50mm 1.8 and 35mm 1.8 dx to compare, but I kept the 35mm and I will never give it away. On our DX cameras it's close to a 50mm on full frame. It's super light, small and images are really sharp if you want them to be, otherwise throwing the background out of focus is really fun. Although it's slightly plasticy, it's my favourite lens.

Hi there....I am planning to get a Nikon D500 which is a DX camera... I am confused about getting a lens..that will suit all kinds of photography landscape, portrait etc with a good creamy bokeh. I had initially planned on getting a 50mm 1.8g lens but then later found out that it isn't the same for a crop sensor so I later resorted to 35mm 1.8. But again fount out that there is both 35mm DX And FX lens. So could you help me with this ? Which will be the best for my requirement ? Thanks

I have a D750 and 35mm 1.8 (FX) and many other FX primes. Recently got a D7200. Question is SHOULD (not Can) I use my existing 35mm on the D7200 or would the 35mm DX be a better option. I was a little bummed out when they first released this lens since I had just bought the Sigma 35 1.4 ART. But seeing these test results makes me glad I chose the slightly more expensive Sigma instead. That one looks and feels more like a Zeiss lens, and it really gives you the results you are asking for in a fullframe 35mm lens.

tbrowniscool Same! I use it now for making KZbin videos on another channel. And taking pics of my family. at f1.8 the depth of field can be very narrow though so it can be tricky to get the focus JUST RIGHT on peoples faces. You'll often get only 1 eye of the two in focus. The trick is choosing the one closer to you.

Yes but if you use the DX on the FX then you would still need to crop into the image to get rid of the remaining vignetting which would then make it a 50mm lens... Also, all the new G series lenses have the same level of build quality... So, yes, in order to get an effective 35mm focal length, this lens is certainly worth the $600. Build quality is par for the course. Don't hammer nails with it.

+Leandro Amarillo I always thought you didn't need to, but what I finally did was pick up crop sensor with a DX lens at 35mm and an FX camera with an FX lens at 52mm and looking though both viewfinders they both exhibited the same visual focal view in degrees. So your DX 35mm will look like using at 52mm on a full frame camera.

Depth of field with always get smaller with larger focal lengths. A 50mm on a crop camera can make for a great portrait lens and will remain a decent lens if you full frame (assuming it's not a DX lens). A 35mm on a crop will make a decent protrait lens with a bit more emphasis on lightly blured out scenery. I have a zoom I used and at 45mm (was cramped and counldn't zoom at 50 without leaving too much out) and got pretty good bokeh with focusing at close range flic.kr/p/BkVNQr In the world of crop lenses, the battle between 24 and 35mm is like the battle of full frames using 35mm and 50mm.

Adam Voelmle That's the camera I have and I love it! I can't find a reason to spend more on a crop sensor camera. Im getting that 35mm f 1.8 DX soon.

On an FX body the 35 is close to a 50mm. seeing that I shoot with primes only, I'd much rather spend $600 on the 28mm f1.8G. that lens will blow your mind!!

Jefferson Peters In terms of field of view, 35mm isn't too far off from 50mm. What I'm getting at is that since I own a 50mm I'd rather go a little wider and get the 28mm f1.8G instead of the 35mm. To me the 35 isn't that far off from the 50mm.

A DX lens on a full frame camera always produces vignetting, is a law of physics.
@TheDyingFox

This is a tough decision... FX is definitely overpriced for its performance and the DX has double the ammount of chromatic aberration if anything except f1.8 is used, that is around 1 pixel, making it quite noticable... (where the FX has 0.6 and below)... But then again, there is no CA test for the FX on a Crop Sensor, so that could be worse... Maybe there are better options now in 2016.

For the price, I'd go with a Sigma... The DX isn't that bad in reality after a little post processing.

Nikon has been like this putting sky high price tags to their lenses. So disappointed also about the price of the new FX 20mm f1.8

Wow, that is a LOT of vignetting for 600 bucks! You buy this lens so you don't have vignetting comapred to the DX version, what were they thinking when they released this thing? I shot the DX version on an FX camera (film to be precise) and the vignetting was ok. It actually looked pretty neat on some photos. But the images were also sharp, that's what I care about. The vignetting can be fully corrected as it seems but still, I think this is a pretty disappointing lens...

Spend $100 more ($700) and get the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 A, which is better than the L series Canon 35mm f/1.4 and Nikon's Pro 35mm f/1.4
