I almost purchased this lens. I had been waiting since last year to get the voigtlander 40mm 1.2 since it was always sold out. Voigtlander had it in stock and I got that instead. For the last month I don’t even use anything else on my ZF. The way Nikon implemented manual focus is pure genius! Can’t believe I how small it is and it puts my favorite lens of all time into second place. I’m sure the Nikon 1.4 is a good lens but I’m thrilled I didn’t get it.

The review we didn't know we needed. After seeing so many vacuous gear reviews over the years , it's refreshing to see a review with meaning again. These are few and far between and as an owner of several Z primes, I really appreciate your insights into both lenses. After years of enjoying several of Nikkor's AI and D lenses, and to date keeping but a few that remain special to me, it's nice to see the company harking back in terms of character and look to their vintage glass. However I'm left wondering if you really can emulate such classic beauty. A bit like if BMW released a new range of retro looking 1980s 3 Series motors. All the look, but with a modern engine. A commendable endeavour, but would it really give the driver the same feel and nostalgia as driving a real vintage 3 Series? Or will we be left yearning for the real deal. Quality vintage glass after all never loses its magic. Or maybe Nikkor are creating something entirely new. A fusion of old and new, that will in time create it's own special space in photographers' hearts. I haven't tried the new 35mm f/1.4 yet but I am certainly curious.

When I was building out my Fujifilm kit practically from the bottom up the 23mm f/1.4R was one of my first purchases. Originally bought as the night and indoor lens, it brought back a spark that I thought I'd never remember. That being my childhood where I grew up taking pictures using a single focal length camera. It may not be exactly the same considering I never held a vintage SLR (my father had a Canon 888 as his earliest camera), but in terms of seeing the world, the 35mm equivalent angle brought me way back. The design also works really well with the classic SLR style of the X-T series that the newer version just didn't have. Was the 23mm perfect all the time? No, definitely not. I have quite a bit of tolerance for loud lenses considering said Canon 888 was the first proper camera I used, but using a micromotor on such a new lens is just a "why?" design choice. At least it focuses quick enough especially in the places I use it (all your linear motors won't save you if your lens are too slow in the dark).

I just got the Nikon ZF with the 40mm (amazing camera) and I’m thinking about getting the 35 mm 1.8. Would you say that the 35 mm 1.8 is a little bit too close to the 40 or is it pretty different? I shoot also on the Fuji X 100 V and that’s my favorite focal length. I also have the 50mm so I’m hoping I’m not overlapping. But interestingly the 50 and the 40 are different enough in my eyes to warrant having both. I’m just wondering if maybe I’m better off getting the 28 2.8 SE or 35 1.8 as the last lens (for now) to round out my kit of the 40, 50 an 85. Thanks for any advice.

I am a sucker for a good 35mm, and the 35mm f1.8 S is great! A bit lighter than the 50mm f1.8 S but pretty much identical in size. Hi Jack, thanks for the coverage. I needed your perspective. One of the things I love about Fuji’s first gen lenses and bodies for that matter, is the character despite the flaws. I hear that the 1.4 leans towards that direction. I think the decision lies in what your purpose is. If you want that “imperfect” look and really want that 35mm fov, it makes sense. Another thing hopefully you are satisfied with the low light performance and dynamic range of the Z6iii. It's supposed to be substantially worse than the ZF which is one of the best performers in both categories in Nikon's lineup.

I kept my fuji lenses including the fujinon 23mm 1.4 since it's resell value wouldn't give me that much money. when it comes to nikon I prefer the rendering of the 35mm1.8s compared to the 1.4 but I understand people liking better the other way. great video and love the photos. i've always struggled with the 35mm focal length as a story telling lens. I put back on my 35mm lens today and tried to capture some moments with my family. 85mm and it's bokeh is almost like cheating as every portrait looks amazing at f1.2, it's been many years and i'm still stuck at the bokeh stage. Trying to up my game to tell a story with all my images instead. keep up the great work!

I highly support nikon move on 35/1.4 non s. Last year i post, nikon should add character lens for photo artist and casuals, 35 and 58. Why no 50? 50/1.8 are so good and cheap that impossible to add another lens at those level (careful other third party lens). 85 i think already crowded enough. I thnk best move between 55-60 will do. @@BokehTherapy Ah. If you have the Z6 III, enjoy! I finally found my long-term camera in the Z8. Before that (long ago), the D700 was the camera I loved so much that I kept it for 5 years or so. The Z8 is way more future proof than the old D700 was, so I should be happy for quite a while and just focus on picking up some lenses. The Zf is just my backup/less used but fun camera. Once you get hooked on the 45.7 MP files and see how flexible that is for cropping options, it's hard to go back to 24 MP (but yes I have one :-)). I also use the newer compressed raw files that really lower the file size with no downside that I can see (in my personal experience, editing in Lightroom). Have a good day.... EDIT: Oops. I hadn't finished the video yet before my comments, but I see you do have the Z6 III.

I do miss the 16mm 1.4 Fuji (and the whole X System) and can understand looking for the "flawed" classic look. I've tried by getting into manual lenses like Voigtländer for the Z series. But on balance, the perfection of the Z S line glass is simply too good. I miss the razor sharp but not clinical 24-70 2.8 Zoom and 1.8 Z primes when I don't have them with me. And Nikon have done the impossible: in the 50mm 1.2 Z and the 135mm 1.8 Plena, they have razor sharp even wide open, wide aperture lenses with a classic, unmistakable look. The only down side is price and weight, but no matter! Congratulations on the Z6 III!

I had the Z 35mm f1.8, and never liked the bokeh at medium distances. The Z f1.4 definitely is smoother. The Z f1.8 is sharper at close distance which is perhaps better for objects other than people where the 1.4 is more kind. One can stop down the aperture however! I wonder how the 1.4 shot at f2 would compare to the Fuji at 1.4 regarding fringing specifically. Both the current Z 35mm's and probably the eventual Z 35mm f1.2 will have their compromises.
@BokehTherapy5 ай бұрын
I stopped the f1.4 down to f1.8/f2 but aberrations didn’t improve that much - think you need to stop down a bit more, then you lose the point of f1.4. Fringing isn’t a dealbreaker if you love the falloff. Thanks for watching!

I took a whole bunch of test shots at f1.8 on the f1.4 lens - not too much improvement in sharpness or aberrations unfortunately. Didn’t make this cut of the video because you lose the creaminess of the f1.4 when you stop down, which is why a lot of people are buying this lens. Thanks for watching!

How does this compare to the 40f2? Different focal lengths and apertures, I know - but usually I'm more happy to take the character lenses if it comes with the advantage of size and weight too. Typically heft is synonymous with build quality and optimal performance, so I think I'm more forgiving of light weight gear.
