Great video! This is one of my go to lenses for portraiture. Renders beautiful color and black & white images. It gets too much criticism for the amount of great photos (like yours) that photographers have made from it. Goes to show you that working photographers don't view gear the same way most KZbinrs do. Superlative images my friend, I suspicion you’ve had many pleased clients! I have the new FL version, replacing my 80-200 2.8 which I never felt under lensed with so waited a loooooong time to bench it. Made some of my best images with the old gal so hanging onto it. Been shooting for maybe 8 months with the new one and have absolutely no regrets, none. Nikkor lens just have a way of rendering images that I find extremely pleasing to my eye, been using them since the seventies so I’ve got plenty of experience. Thanks for sharing! Ciao.

THE 70-200 FL lens is a beast. If my vrii is amazing to me I can only imagine what the FL new one would be. Great lens, Def a keeper. I've notice prices on the FL have dipped a bit on the used market. perfect time to buy one pre owned. As far as your 80-200, yes your like me, its been with you for years, keeping it because it means allot to you, I have many pieces like this I am attached to for this reason. Exceptional images thanks for sharing. I have been looking for a 70 - 200mm solution for my Z7 but could not justify the hefty $2400.00 price tag. After watching your video I reached out to a few local camera dealers and one that had a used 70-200mm VRII for just under 1K. It works great with the FTZ adapter. Thank you

You are so right. Its a must have in your bag. If you dont have a 70-200 and you dont want to spend the latest model money $2200 plus tax then its a no brainer. Focus breathing issue or not. It also works well with ftz and z cameras. And works great with the 1.4x teleconverter.

Very interesting mate - I have to say I am not going to upgrade the 70-200 vr2 because I too am happy with the quality and results, i’ve used it on the Nikon D3, D4S, and now I’m using it on a Nikon D5, and I shoot runway catwalk shows without any problems at all. The D5 has made a higher frame count but the lens is still wowing me every time. I’m also using the 24-70vr on an 850 and I’m very pleased with that set up. I also have an 85 mm 1.4 in my bag too. this is a very lovely lens and a really good set up for work. Thanks again for the videos.

I had both and kept the FL version , the FL is a bit sharper, but now in 2020 the prices of the VRII have come down a lot, I'm buying the VRII again. is a great lens and i love the mages i got with it when i had it. btw Your images are beautiful, you should create videos on how to make great portraits, I will be watching for sure.

Those beautiful images with that piano music make this a joy to watch and so inspiring, Vahagen! I only have the 80-200 two ring AF-D and I find that when I shoot at 200 mm wide open, my shots are not sharp as yours. It wasn't soft before..

Maybe your eyes are so used to sharpness of modern lenses and now when using the D lens wide open, it seems like its soft? Sometimes are eyes get used to a certain thing and when going back and not using a lens for while?

Hi Vahagen, when I first bought the 80-200 AF-D, I was using a D90 and the lens was sharp at 200mm wide open. Years later, Imoved up to the D700 and paired with the 80-200, I found the images to be soft. I never dropped or mishandled the 80-200, but something's not right. I'm also not happy w/ the colors of images on the D700. I often have to adjust it in Lightroom. My D7100 gets more use coz the colors are just lovely and the images are really sharp. So I don't know if the lens has to be fine tuned to the D700, something I don't know how to do. I haven't really used the 80-200 in more than two years. I should mount it on the D7100 & see if I get soft images as well.

I agree with all you wrote about the second generation 70-200 VR ll. Last spring I sold the lens and upgraded to the latest FL version for only an additional $150. I did the same with my 24-70 G, trading to the new 24-70 vr. Haven't used either very much but so far it looks promising.

Nice photos and nice music! Great thing because u have shown the photos. It can always be better. I think that crop mode for video made you croping the fingers on two photos, but others are great in terms of lighting, moments and composition. 70-200g I is close to II and my way to go on weddings. I simply dont care abouth weight and i dont have time for tele primes. Colors are warm and bokeh is great.

Hi VaHagen, sorry if I misspell your name. Just wanted to thank you for your encouragement. My homework in my photography class this week is portraits, so I’m hoping to get the Nikon 105mm VR by Saturday. I’m really anxious to use it. The photographer who sold it to me has a D850 and said the pixels are so numerous, it doesn’t seem to work well with that full frame camera. But said it would work great with my cropped sensor on my D3400. He also has the Nikon 70-200 VRll like yours and loves it for sports. Anyways thank you so much again…

The Nikon 85 1.8 G is a much more versatile portrait lens than the Nikon 105 Macro. The Macro is good for plants and insects up close.

Hello Vahagn! I have one question! In this video you mentioned also that you had in the past the 70-200 f2.8 VR (1)... so what is your opinion compared to the VR (2)? I have a chance to buy the VR (1) used (because I always look for used for budget reasons)... so is the VR (1) a good choise? I am afraid to go for the f4 because I have only a D700 and a D610, and maybe the ISO capabilities in these models are not enough when you have to deal with low light situations. So, what is your opinion... should I go for the VR (1) or it would be a waste of money?? What is your realistic advice from your expierence?

YES!!! Buy the VR2. It's sharper. If you remember the VR1 was designed around the time of DX bodies. If your using FX I would go with the VR2 .Plus you get better VR performance with the II and closer focus. not by allot. I've owned both. VR1 is actually a little smaller in size if I remember. BOth are great options and both are high end glass. but If I were to choose today, VRII. Yes the VRII is not perfect . it suffers a little from focus breathing but it doesnt affect my shoots. Great lens all around. Its not gonna cost you that much more for a used copy vs the VR1.

So, thank you so much for your lovely message. I really would like a one-stop zoom lens that can do close macro and great portraits as well, that’s not super heavy. Of course AF & VR are a must 😊 Also wondering if F1.8 can do macro. Or is 2.8 the standard for real close ups.

hehe sadly that lens does not exist. A real macro lens would have to be a fixed focal length lens. However some zoom lenses can get close. like the 24-70mm close focuses however it is not a true macro. I've never heard of a macro being 1.8. atleast not that I know of. :) rock on Deb. When something doesn't come out as you hoped in your pictures let that be learning moment. Keep going and you will see you will get better. You are so right, Its not the lens its the photographer. Clients sometimes love there images and tell me , wow you have an amazing camera.. LOL I laugh when I hear that. Its like putting a person that doesnt know how to play piano in front of a 100K grand piano. And a professional pianist behind a casio keyboard. Try the 24-120mm f4 nikon VR lens, Its an FX lens however it will work on your camera. Used you can pick one up for under 400 and its a great lens with and not to heavy. And one day when you upgrade to a FX full frame you can use this lens. try that, Macro lens I would get the nikon 105mm f2.8G lens. Have fun with your photography and ROCK N ROLL :)

So I did end up purchasing the AF-S Nikon 105MM VR macro lens from a fellow photographer who does sports photography. He said it did not work that well on his D850, but works well on a crop sensor. After all my research I thought this must be a good one for me for now as a beginner, it has great reviews and comes up number one in the comparisons of Tokina and Tamron for sharpness. So you were the one who sent me on my merry way of investigation LOL. I think I purchased a great one for now… thank you again for your inspiring words and videos 🤗🥰

A combination of the D800- D850 and D4 for the images. It has good performance with a Z6. I would say about the same. Great for video on a mirrorless on a monopod if you are doing clips on the side.

Thank you M Mm. Umm tough question. I love all the bodies. I would have to say the Nikon D4, only because I love that camera. second is the D800 that I've used the most on this lens. My also sure my D3X would be killer with this lens.

How much it worth uses estimated? Do you recommend to get the last version or get the VR 2?

They run about 1K - 1.2K used. maybe a little more or less. depends on the condition. Both VRi and VRII lenses are great. You will save more with the VRI. but both are great. VRII has Nano, a bit better sharpness and lens formula/ colors. VRII is a bit better when it comes to VR. however the VRII suffers from focus breathing and its not a true 200mm on the long end i Would say the focal length is about 180mm at 200mm. depending on the distance of your subject. That lens is sharp and it has nice contrast. the VR 2 that is. Bult very well. I dropped mine a few times and still works. I would get the VRII lens over the VRI.

I've actually dropped this lenses a few times with the camera on the lens. I put it on my camera bag as I was saying bye to someone. fell about 3 feet down. thin carpet floor . damaged the camera D850 but nothing happened to the lens. I guess I got lucky not with the camera but the lens

As you Americans say, "Armchair quarterback" aside, it is a good lens, but you'll find the Tamron version can match this lens for 30 percent less money. You could also try the Tokina 100 macro.

Hi, I have this Lens. And it is my last . My F5 can Not handle E lenses. even .... there is no need to upgrade. this is the greatest. Film cannot boost iso to the sky but this vr nails really 4 stops.

I've always been very happy with this 70-200mm I too don't see any reason to upgrade , my net 70-200 will be for the Z system. hehe that one is a beast i Heard.

this must be the only video that praises this lens im confused now as 9 out of 10 vids say its rubbish with bad contrast, focus breathing on;y around 180mm, poor micro contrast low colour saturation etc the list grows including poor bokeh being addressed too but i guess the proof is in the pudding, i have the 80-200 af-d and this thing is outstanding apart from the focusing, but to gain that i may just get one of these and see if it does what i want it too or hire one maybe. thanks for a great video by the way

Hello Tony, thank you for your comment. The main reason why I praise this lens is because it has worked for me and delivered the results I want from this lens. Does this lens have flaws? yes. one of them being the focus breathing and not being a true 200mm. Other than that, if you can get past that fact, the bokeh is excellent, the colors are great, sharpness is awesome, focus is fast, and for video its very good. I've had the 70-200 vri and that lens was great aswell, To come back to your comment about why I love this lens, maybe be because I actually use this lens for real work and not just reviewing and comparing lenses on youtube. :) but that being said I don't care what anyone says, this lens has worked for me and might work for you, one plus is its going for a good price used these days so that might be a plus for someone that is in the market and not wanting to spend 2500 on the FL new one or the Z 70-200mm. btw thanks Tony, glad you enjoyed the review. more videos on its way!! The FE version is sharper, focuses more closely, and has less breathing. I've owned both but I'm not professional. Judging from the photos you've made with the VRii I wouldn't be in any hurry to change

Thank you Tony. Yah I'm sure the FE is the ultimate 70-200mm F mount to date. The basically took care of all the short comings of the vrii . fixed those issues combined that with a more updated lens formula. Hence the FE elements. Thank you again for the compliment there at the end. 🤘🏼🤘🏼

I would say the Tamron version is just as good as the FE. Why pay more when you dont have to Hayley.
