Good review, detailed but not too long. I have found that this camera has the most drastically benefit to shoot in raw that I have seen in a Nikon camera. The difference between the jpg and your processed raw file could be dramatic, you can rescue a lot of highlights and shadows as well as details

I got this during Xmas promo $220 and it is worth that, more than 50% off normal asking price. I was able to zoom in on the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction, hand held manual focus(infinity),1/40th sec, ISO 1600 and can see a small but quite sharp ring around Saturn. I doubt any phone could manage that but I could be wrong..

I stumbled into one secondhand in good condition for €180 and was looking for a review. The lack of a hot shoe mount and microphone port makes it unusable for video. Great review.

Hey Scoot, What do you think about this camera versus the Coolpix A? I’m trying to decided for an everyday camera Fujifilm Xt30, x100v and Ricoh Gr iii Seems everywhere and are my options but I recently found about the coolpix series

The Fujifilm X-T30, X100V, and Ricoh GR III are significantly better options than this A1000 with its tiny sensor. I don't know much about the COOLPIX A. According to this CameraStoreTV video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5zFdX-EZpqorqM ) the Nikon was around when the original Ricoh GR was out, so I'd expect the GR III to be significantly better overall. The only way I'd consider the COOLPIX A is if you can find it very low cost.

I'll stick to my 24mp DSLR, the problem with this type of camera is that constantly running that sensor and a screen or eyepiece eats the batteries. I've had similar cameras and when you reach for your camera to find it's dead then you end up not getting the picture, which is very much the humber one requirement.

Right now you could get a Canon EOS M50 kit for an extra $20, or one with an external microphone for $70. We are talking a crop factor of 1.6x versus 5.6. Does this camera have a time limit on the 4k video, I know some budget cam like the Sony HX99 only record 5 mins in 4k before it shuts off due to heat I think. I'm looking for a 4k camera under $400 to do at home KZbin tutorials. Is this good or any other recommendations? Cheers! 😊

I didn't test the amount of time to record on the camera, sorry. No idea if heat is an issue with extended recording sessions. I make all of these videos with a Canon EOS M50 at 1080p. Sensor size and lens is more important than output resolution, in my opinion. For solo video creation I order things like this: Good video autofocus, a good integrated lens or interchangeable lens mount, a screen that can face forward easily, and microphone port for ease of improving sound. This camera has "contrast detect" autofocus, which isn't great for video and it lacks a microphone port. I'd rather use a smartphone for KZbin instead of this camera unless I really needed that long telephoto lens. There isn't much at $400 in the dedicated camera world that could get better quality than a smartphone. If you save up $500-700 you could get something that you could grow with such as the Canon M50, Sony A6100, or Fujifilm X-A7 / X-T200. The Sony A6100 is my main suggestion because it doesn't have a recording limit per clip ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/hITLknutfc2XnqM ). Most cameras these days still have a 30 minute per clip limit. But the reason I wanted a cheap dedicated camera was so I can connect it to OBS and do on screen tutorial while I had a little window of my face. Not sure if I can connect my phone on OBS and I kind of don't want to wear it out.

The A1000 won't work as a webcam as far as I know. There are Android apps that can turn the phone into a webcam. I don't have any experience with those. Search for "android webcam". I have two videos on it ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnu2mpZ9i9ihmas and kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXyUf5-QeZhlo8U ). It's okay, but there are better more compatible options. There is no audio from the camera with this, so external audio is needed. The Sony A6100 has "clean HDMI" so with a capture device like those Elgato ones it would give the best result, but that's getting near $1000 for the entire setup. I think Sony is working on USB webcam software as well, but not sure if it is released yet and if the A6100 will be a compatible camera. I'm not sure on the Fujifilm cameras. They are also making usb webcam software but not sure what the status is of that. Pretty much all of the camera companies are doing it due to COVID. HDMI capture gives the best result, but the camera needs to output that clean signal without any type of screen overlay. Sorry, that's something I tested or compared to anything else. Generally in-camera audio recording will not be great because of how it all works. There are a few exceptions like the Sony ZV-1 when the included wind noise reducer is used.

$270 is lower than the retail price by quite a bit. Worth is going to depend on you and what you want to do with it. You should be able to find this camera at places like Best Buy to try out.

What you want there more so depends on your techniques used. You won't get a camera giving you visible detail through a window when you are taking the photo inside to get detail in there unless you are using a special mode, such as HDR, or taking multiple exposures yourself and mixing them together. When a camera has a good amount of "dynamic range" you can exposure for the light coming through the windows and then raise the darkness inside the room with a photo editing program. Some cameras can manage to give you a decent result with a single photo. I don't think this camera will do it very well. The A1000 has RAW capability, but it depends on the sensor and other factors. Or if you want something very compact there are a few cameras like the RX100 series that have 1" sensors which might give you a better chance.

@@ScottJWaldron Thanks. The reason I asked is my wife is a Realtor and takes many pics indoors and the windows are bright making it difficult to see the details in the room. Indoor lights on case unwanted colors if not a white light as I'm sure you know. We use to have a camera that had a setting that helped but too old as far as tech and pixels.

I lived for a long time in an area of Rockford where you learned the difference between gunshot sounds and things like fireworks/car backfires, though thankfully (knock on wood) I've never personally been in any extreme situations.

That's up to you. Look at the features and physical size to deside. This can fit in a pocket, the B600 can't. My suggestion would be an interchangeable lens camera be a camera that you can grow with like a Sony A6000, but it might be a lot more expensive. These cameras have cery small sensors and fixed lenses.

@@wh8246 Get this camera as a beginner, once you master it you can keep it and move up to another Nikon, like the Z50 or Z5. Nikon's are far superior photo cameras than Sonys, better menu system and ergonomics, more durable. The reviewer shot this in the evening only during low light, which is of course hard for any camera, the Nikon or the Sony. This camera performs great in good light during day time. And unlike the Sony A5100, it can shoot in 4K, which is a big plus.

Probably no way of knowing, but I'd say yeah. At least compared to the few other fixed lens cameras they still sell like the B500, P950, and P1000. There was a B600 but that appears to be gone too. Could also be parts shortages vs. other cameras they sell that use some of the same stuff taking priority.

@@ScottJWaldron perhaps the pricing hadn’t helped. Nearly$500, and I see sites advertising $800 or more. Yeah a Sony goes for $1200. Despite all of it, I scored an A1000 for under $400. True, gray market, and Nikon seems to refuse to service them. I have an S6800 I bought many years ago. It remains flawless. I wanted the RAW of the 1000. I mostly shoot a D500, but like having a good pocket camera too. Not being my main, I guess if the1000 needed attention, sending to Nikon in Japan could be done.

I don't remember specifics of every camera I look at. I spent time verifying that the camera can do RAW by looking at Nikon's website just so I could make sure I'm getting you correct info. Yet you come back with disrespect... Regardless of that I will still help. I don't think you are ready to care if it does RAW or not. You need software like Photoshop or get a copy of software Nikon probably offers free to buyers to edit the RAWs. ".NRW" is probably some acronym/file extension Nikon came up for their proprietary type of RAWs. Most camera companies have their own format.

I see, no problem. I had just copied it from their site and didn't give you enough detail. It's the file extension so "file-name.nrw" is what the raw files would look like on the computer. Without Nikon's software or something else you probably won't even be able to see previews of the pictures on a computer. i have this camera and i am very disappointed in it, stability control sucks, hard to get non blurry shots unless the camera is on a surface or tripod, its very difficult to get good photos from it, the auto focus is bad. i was on holiday and went back to using my phone because of how disappointing this camera is
