Jared. I just came across this video today. It is one of the best videos on photography I've come across on KZbin. I totally agree with the points you are making on the nowadays vintage digital cameras. I still shoot mu D300 from 2006 (?) with great results. In 2012 I bought the Leica M Monochrom CCD - it's as close to shooting film as you can get these days. The screen on this Leica is no better than the one you had on the Nikon Dx1, so chimoing is not an option. I've also modified the camera, by covering the screen with a piece of black cardboard and some black electrical tape, so I don't know what I've got from a shoot until I put the SD-card into my computer. Last week I shot in New York city with the 12 MP Fuji X100. As the autofocus is almost useless on this the first X-model, I used zone-focussing, getting very film-like results. Not always tack sharp, but even so I got some unsharp keepers. I've now subscribed to your channel. / Best regards, Finn Calander www.sawantphotography.com

I got a D1 to play with (the first one not the D1x) finally got the charger for it and thankfully it works. for some reason I have to press AF ON to get it to AF at all (won't do it with the shutter release) but it does work with the cheap 70-210 I snatched off ebay. So far it seems to work though REALLY strangely it works with my 2gb CF card and my 1gb and 8gb micro drives but will NOT work with the pile of 512mb CF cards I have. strange. Your pictures look AMAZING!! they have a "color" envelope to them that just looks fantastic! not sure how to describe it but I love it. it sort of has a happy days but more serious look going for it. really don't know how to describe it. Sensor? post editing style? I don't know but its fantastic. That dude has some SERIOUS photogenic character. what a great subject! he is more interesting than the bikes! Honestly. once you get past 2mp (no cropping) you really do have "enough" data. at 6mp you have more than enough data for pretty much anything. people like me are MEgapizel whores. but that because I tend to shoot little tiny missiles going 400mph from far away so pixels are EVERYTHING. but for day to day shooting? with half way decent glass. mp just stops matter. at least in SLR territory IE decent sensor size. it becomes about composition framing editing style. IE photographer stuff. not tech stuff. This is why a 20+ year old camera works just fine! you lose the creature comforts but the "capacity" is still their! One thing I miss. or maybe I am just older with shittier eyes now??? who knows but I don't remember having any focusing issues with my old pentax k film camera. the viewfinder was super bright easy to see and the "split" center focus tool inside the camera was fast and accurate. The core issue with modern DSLR's is the damned view is too small and too dim and has no focusing "aids" built in at all (IE namely the split focus thing not sure what it was called where the image skewed itself over a line bisecting a circle in the middle of the view finder and you adjusted focus until the two halves came into alignment. I have actually reached nearly to my upgrade limit for DSLR's now. for what I shoot a optical VF is mandatory. I can not used an EVF. you can't shoot tiny 400mph missiles with a EVF your gonna miss half the shots simple due to LCD lag and resolution. ie the lag time between what is what you see and what refreshes on the little LCD inside. I mean even when I shoot video I mount a non magnified rifle red dot "sight" to the camera. just keep the dot on the rocket. get focus switch to manual to lock it in and just keep the dot on the rocket :-) try that with an LCD and yeah. not fun.

It was actually great to see you struggling and thinking out loud about what to do if you're in a pretty tight spot. One more thing to add, when shooting raw the D1x is actually a 10mp camera. The imaging software rezs up the short side of the image so you in fact get a 10mp final image. Is it that much better than the native 5mp? No not really but does give you a little more room to work.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. I didn't think any thing of it, I like the use of old camera by the pros. It really hammers in the "it's not the camera" mentality. I also like seeing two people use the same old camera and see how they use it vs the cameras they use today. I'd love to see a Head to Head between Jared and Matt, not that it would matter, just kind of cool.
@zagan18 жыл бұрын
+Jared Polin I think it was just a case of what was cheaper on ebay than any shirt off band thing. I notice you are doing similar subjects to Matt in a different way and it seems to be working out well. in terms of seeing new content. I think. would be good to see if Matt and you did a photo shoot together, but you pick the place and the type of shoot and Matt does the photos and it gets swapped around or do the photos at the same time, something like the 5 min photo shoot. then see what the results end up like. I think Matt's d1x was $250 australian dollars, and I'm pretty sure he says a Canon was $290 so he got the cheaper camera plus the d1x came with extra batteries and 3 memory cards. of which 1 battery doesn't work, 1 half holds a charge, and 1 is good. 2 memory cards don't work at all. so maybe the Canon would have been the better buy, lol.

10:01 - Focus with a central point and recompose is an old school way? How do people do it nowadays? Do they switch the focusing point manually before every next frame? I am not joking. Please educate me.

So photography was being done 15 years ago too, huh? Surely a camera from 15 years ago (and a pro one at that) is capable of it's primary function - taking pictures... the rest is just how anal you are about noise...

Not forgetting dynamic range as well in that equation.

sexysilversurfer SNR is a big part of the dynamic range equation, so if you can read - I've indirectly mentioned it. Regardless, I stand by my point that it's a camera (and a pro body too) and it takes pictures - therefore can definitely be used for the purpose of taking pictures...

Amazing compositions, amazing feel of the environment!!! The camera doesn't really matter, what really matters is the eye of the photographer... you wore the feel of vintage shooting with the vintage camera... and captured with the soul......

These images are superb and have more depth and realism than the modern overly clinical and soulless digital photos. I still enjoy taking the D1X out for this reason.

This five min portrait has been my favorite so far!!! The images are so stunning and I absolutely love the story. My grandfather owned a vintage bike shop and raced motorcycles and this guy reminded me so much of him. Wish someone had done this type of photo story for him!!!!

The photo at 42:27 was just amazing. The out of focus background in contrast with the foreground. And I love how the photo is split machine on the right man on the left just awesome. This is why I keep coming back. Jared you are truly an amazing photographer.

I enjoyed this very much. Perfect example of how the camera doesn't make the photographer. You killed it, Jared!

It's just amazing how cameras has evolved in the last 15 years. I can't even imagine how slow AF was on that D1X with just 5 focusing points. I loved the way you used central point and then recompose. Great video, Fro!! And great pictures too.

The D1x focuses fast and also in near dark clubs and concerts.

Not slow at all, it was lightning fast. I don't know why he chose to focus and recompose, I never had any problems using all 5 during runway fashion shooting. I think he didn't spend much time getting familiar with the camera. Looking back at my old shots I noticed that while the operation of newer cameras has improved, I can still take what I take today with an old D1x or IDMK2/3.
