Jared Polin for putting your work out there for an open critique. An ability to give constructive feedback and an openness to receive the same are important to creative growth. This video - and others you've done - do a lot to educate other photographers, to show that criticism can be a good thing. It helps us get better. Please, do more videos like this. A variation on this theme would be to review a sequence of exposures and talk about the process of selecting *the* shot from a series of photos capturing the same scene/subject.

Jared, welcome to my everyday of being a military photographer :) Long, fast lenses and lots of panning. Lots of cropping is crucial to aircraft photography. Yes, you lose a little resolution, but it's better then losing the shot altogether.
@MauriceWijma10 жыл бұрын
Very nice information he gives. I've shot some motorsports a few times, and I love to fill the frame with the landscape where the cars will go to. A pretty difficult job when you can't go everywhere, but when you get it, it makes the picture tell much more. This, of course, is a lot more difficult with airplanes.

who cares if you crop a 20-30 megapixel image? Videographers will shoot 4k (8 megapixels) and crop down to 1080 (2 megapixels) and it looks great. When you have so much resolution like a dslr in photo mode it seems like overkill to not crop even though it would improve the composition of the image.

Like Jared but every pro crop's it's evolution. We have the resolution to do so, especially capturing a moment. He has ocd though. For animals, sports, planes... You need to crop. For portraits get the shot right in camera.
@ocphotography91366 жыл бұрын
Cropping was always a thing with film photography then people stopped doing it in the digital age because the resolution wasn't good enough. Now we have the resolution so the cropping technique is once again being used, nothing at all wrong with it.

I've just come back to this video. I have encountered some of the problems Jarred had. Using a long lens at a relatively slow shutter speed. It's very difficult to get a sharp image of a prop driven aircraft and get prop blur. Sometimes you have to "spray and pray"... As Matt says, you have to break the habit of a lifetime and crop your photos.

Did you use or not use a polarizing filter? I think that could have saturated the sky a little more in some shots.
@yupme45966 жыл бұрын
A polarizing filter would saturate the sky for sure, but it would also minimize the light intake for the camera. I wouldn't use the polarizer unless it's for static planes.

That diving plane at 20.40 is epic. Awesome shot. Much cooler the closeups in my opinion. I'd print that!
@Csoery8 жыл бұрын
Most of it is just personal, tbh... E.g. some ppl are crazy about bokeh, I think it's totally overused, for me it's on par with color separation. He said the planes being right in the centre is wrong, I would disagree, I think in some cases it's perfectly fine to center your subject, and I can see no point in forcing an off-centre framing just because it's a good composition technique when it doesn't feel natural to your eyes when you take the shot. I liked the air show video and this one as well. I appreciate that you show photographers as they really are: human... Too many self-conceited "pros" out there.
@MundMoriginal8 жыл бұрын
You kinda misinterpretation the point. It's not about that it's bad when it's in center, it's not good because there is too much uninteresting area around the plane. A closer shot or cropping the image would make it much better. Besides, yes, there is much subjective when talking about photos, but we have two people who do that professional for many years now and if anyone, THEY know which pictures sell, that's what it is all about. Nobody is forcing you to change how you shoot airplanes, these are suggestions from people who know how to shoot something to get it how they imagine it and how they think a picture works best out of many years of experience.
@henrygaraffa55847 жыл бұрын
the rule of thirds is not a subjective thing, images always look better when the subject either fills the frame or is close to a thirds line.

Not a bad effort there Fro, not bad at all :) As a frequent aviation shooter, it's nice to see how an 'outsider' (sorry, I tried to think of a better word!) deals with the subject. I know you don't like to crop, and it certainly has its benefits when going for shots that take in the whole environment. But, if you visit a show on a day with pure blue skies, and no clouds, the drama of uncropped shots just won't be there. What you need to do, if it's frame-fillers you want, is visit Oshkosh. I have a friend that shoots (and writes) for AeroResource and Jets magazine, and what he brought back to the UK from his week in Wisconsin was utterly mindblowing! If all else fails, you should get yourself over the pond, to visit Old Warden, a vintage Mecca, where 300mm is often too much!
@AdamDooley10 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed your airshow videos! Both the critique and the 5 min portrait! I went to an airshow earlier this year with the Blue Angels as the centerpiece. I reacted much the same way you did with practically feeling overwhelmed by the "attack" of the jets. I'm very ADD like you at times and the jets can overwhelm the senses and your sense of orientation. It almost requires taking small break from time to time just to recover my senses from the stress of it.
@earthboundmisfit4048 жыл бұрын
Great video, especially for those looking to learn and explore aviation photography. One question I have is what drove the change in ISO? For the Thunderbird sequence I noticed the ISO at 400-500. Was this a technique to tune in exposure settings without changing shutter/aperture? Any concerns of noise going to the higher ISO? Thanks for the video and any advice you may have.
@RunNGunPhoto7 жыл бұрын
Sometimes ISO was necessary when his aperture was at f22. He couldn't raise his shutter because it has to stay low to keep the propellors blurred. So when the exposure is too dark, ISO is what you have to raise sometimes.

Indeed. This is one of those places where the crop sensors are more suited. A 7D MkII even with a 70-200 would give you more range than this D4S with 300mm given the crop factor would give you 320mm effectively.

See what I'd do with photo at 19:05 is set shutter speed to freeze it all including the props, then just add the prop blur back in photoshop. Of course it's better to do it in camera but when it's hard or close to impossible to do then it's easier to add blur than it is to take it away. It's what I'd do personally.
@williamneuman77836 жыл бұрын
Just found this video. I have been shooting airshows since the mid/late 70's. Started with a kodak 110 and in 78 bought an Olympus OM-1 35mm. My problem is generally freezing the prop. I need to keep shutter speed down.
@ParkerUAS5 жыл бұрын
I have found myself in the 1/160 range for my best shots. I went so far as to to calculate the prop RPM of various aircraft (which was a PITA when you have to find cruise RPM and then the prop gearing) and calculating it down to how much of an arc I wanted. This really didn't help a lot. 1/320 is good as well, but on a 4 blade prop like most WW2 fighters I wasn't getting enough sweep for my tastes.

Nice shots, being a photographer means that you should be able to shoot almost anything, and trying for the first time to shoot fast moving subjects it's a challenge and you have to adapt on the spot. I shot some F1 cars going by last year in the afternoon in the rain, it wasn't easy but it was a lot of fun and I've learned a lot about shooting fast moving subjects in low light. Nice airplane photos and the ones with the red helicopter were very cool!

I don’t know much about digital cameras so I’m sorry if this sounds like a noob question. There is a 500mm lens available for mine so I was wondering if that would be good enough for this type of photography.
