D300, D90, D5000 all have the same sensor, CPU, and front end processing software of the data from the sensor. It just depends on the type of body that you want and how rugged you need it to be. I have all three and have photos published from these three.

I have the D300 in mint condition and it is a keeper. Had the D700 and the D3 and sold them. Have regretted it ever since.

I have all 3, I love both the D300 and the D700. However I really wanted to like the D3, but its weight was atrocious. I have battery grips for both the D300 and D700, and the weight on both are manageable. For what the D3 brings to the table, I'll take the D700 anytime, that extra 2 fps the D3 has on the D700 with the battery grip would not matter much anyway since hit rate for high fps in those times were less than 40% to begin with. Everytime I brought the D3 with me it felt literally like there was a brick in my bag. I don't every plan to go to the north or south pole, or the Sahara desert, and bringing the D3 out in public feels awkward since you stick out like a sore thumb with its size especially when I am not even a "pro" photog. Bad impulse buy.

I still have my original D300 that purchase back when it came out. I was working at Kits Camera and used the discount buying directly from Nikon USA. It’s truly a solid camera and joy to use. I also have that Holga Lens :) I agree that it can sometimes be a bit heavy for just walking around everyday stuff due to being built like a tank. I also agree that I like the file size for editing family and friend photos. Keep the videos coming, I will keep watching and sharing them!

Definitely going to get one. I considered the D90 but the 300 is better built (not that I'm hard on equipment, but the weather sealing is a huge plus). The only other possible choice is a D7000/7100 but those are more expensive. My old camera (a Nikon COOLPIX L840 that I picked up a few years ago for $100) recently died so it's upgrade time.

The Nikon D300 is a remarkable camera for the price So much so that I have 7 of them. It is built like a tank. There are a lot of reasons that the D300, the D700 and D3 are such highly regarded cameras. I prefer the output of the D300 to the D7000, the D7100 and even the FX D600. 12 MP is just fine. I don't see myself printing billboard size prints any time soon. But, then, back in the day, billboards were shot with 12MP D3 and D700 cameras. The best thing about the D300 is that it can use a lot of older screw drive lenses, and there are a great number of them out there on the used market for low prices. If you are interested, I'll put together a list of my favorites. For good lighting and studio work, the D300 is my go to Nikon. Is it my favorite over all? No, that honor goes to the Pentax K5, but that's another story.

I bought mine from the first UK shipment on pre-order and still own it. Very reliable, good battery life and much better build than similar level cameras of today. I did not go for the s version as they gave me something I did not want- video but failed to give me something I would have liked- more resolution. Hints for prospective buyers? First splash our a little more and hang in there for one with low shutter count, great cosmetics and original packaging (always a clue to a careful owner) - yes they do exist but you need to regularly check sites like mpb and be ready to strike fast! Secondly buy a Nikon battery grip (once very expensive but now cheap as chips) so you can adapt it to take the high output battery pack. You add weight but look a bit more like a pro but importantly can expect 4000+ shots from the combined batteries with no need to recharge. Finally do not worry about 12 megapixels - for most purposes perfectly adequate and you do not need the latest high resolution lenses. I use the 24-120 f4 on mine and they go really well together making a pleasing 28-180 approx equiv setup.

People who save their empty boxes is not a gauge of if someone gives a 💩 or took Care of it. It's heavy enough and no one should be concerned about trying to do 4000k in a charge. Spray and pray heavy set photographers are worse then a p Diddy after party.

Don't forget the D300S, in my opinion superior to all 3 of the above. The D7000 with it's 16MP sensor and a decent lens can have the edge in picture quality if it manages to acquire accurate focus, however when pushed hard (fast action etc) it cannot match the 300S.

@@robbellphoto Everyone thinks they have to have the latest and greatest while these vintage cameras were knocking out amazing images just a few years ago. I have a 24x36 print that rivals my Kodachrome enlargements and I made it using the D40x, 10.6 megapixel, 15 year old camera with a CCD sensor. The colors are amazing. I'm going to start grabbing these old Nikon's. Great video by the way...

@@unbroken1010 I have used both as well as the D300S, the 90 came out about a year after the 300 and in my experience it's picture quality is that little bit better. Can't match the 300 for autofocus though.

D300 is still a semi-pro camera that takes great pictures in demanding situations. I agree it's missing some modern features like video, and selfie mode is really clunky (you need a tripod), but those aren't the kinds of photos I shoot anyway.
