Very interesting, I’ve only recently started using the live view on my D700 which I’ve had for about 9 years. It certainly does eat batteries. It managed 24 shots today with a fully charged battery!
@frederikboving3 жыл бұрын
Ha ha! 24 images! Well, well - we were many that complained about battery life on mirrorless systems, but when you use your DSLR's Live View, you start to understand what the mirrorless are op against: to power a small TV constantly!
@moryakov4165 Жыл бұрын
I’ve been told there is a secondary mirror behind the main mirror which focuses the light down beneath the main mirror where the autofocus and metering systems are located on the D700, which would explain why the mirror must move even in tripod mode

I ordered a battery grip with BL3 Chamber Cover for $54 USD so I can use my D3 battery for the d700 along with the regular battery at the same time, it will allow 8FPS and I imagine significantly increase battery usage for the camera during live view. I shoot with newer gear as second shooter but really have been enjoying the D700 as well as your videos...thank you. I've got the same 180mm AI lens also that I saw in another of your videos. Cool, thanks! Good you found a better way to work with the live view - it is a bit quirky to have it on the mode dial; it would be nice to have a dedicated LV button as is the case on later models.

In live view why does my camera go into manual? It doesn’t auto meter.
@frederikboving11 ай бұрын

@@frederikboving it turns out that it only re meters when I re focus, it’s not a live meter like modern live view cameras. So if I’m focused on something and move to another subject it won’t meter again until I re focus on the new subject, then it stays there until I release the shutter. I can change settings manually in different modes but it doesn’t auto meter when re composing without re focusing. I think that’s just the way it works.

I know that live view on nikon d700 is not "the best" compare to live view's of newer cameras that even have touch screen and could flip the LCD screen. But I wanted to ask about battery, whether it consumes the battery quickly on newer cameras or is it just on d700. Is it just d700 problem or every camera have problem with battery when is on live view mode.
@frederikboving3 жыл бұрын
I cannot speak for all cameras, but I know that it is a problem for many cameras. The "little" battery that sits in a DSLR is often not designed to keep the rear LCD fired up for longer periods of time. In the eyes of the DSLR; the rear LCD is like a big TV-set to keep powered up and hence very taxing. The optical viewfinder on the other hand requires no (or very little) power relative to the rear LCD.

Is it natural that the Nikon d700 during live view got delayed playback?
@frederikboving3 жыл бұрын
Hi, not sure what you mean exactly by "delayed playback", but the D700 does not have much computing power relative to what we are used to here in 2021, so if you swing your camera say left/right while live view is on, I would expect that the rear LCD shows is lagging relative to what the lens sees. Hope this helps.

I wanted to ask, about live view exposure, because in new models camera we really see how will picture look when we take it, like if I'm overexposed it will be seen in live view, if I'm underexposed it will shows. But I think In d700 live view you don't see how will picture look, you see the same thing as you look through the viewfinder. Is there way to make live view to show pictures how really will they look after taking it? I hope you understand my question:)
@frederikboving2 жыл бұрын
Hi Aleksandar, yes, I think I understand your question. Yes, it looks like the camera does not control the aperture during live view mode. I can see that pressing the DOF preview button has no effect either. So I am afraid that you are absolutely right, that the preview is not an exposure preview. My best suggestion is to keep an eye out for the exposure indicator when shooting in manual mode. Sorry that this was not very helpful.
@aleksandardimitrijevic13892 жыл бұрын
@@frederikboving No, it's helpful, I just wanted to confirm. And yes I'm always looking at the indicator, that's my savior 😂

@@aleksandardimitrijevic1389 Hi Aleksandar, I studied the manual and did a bit of testing with a AF-S lens in manual mode, but no luck. I think maybe this is where the age of the D700 starts to show. After all, the Live View implementation on the D700 was one of the first ones that Nikon did, so I think that is why it is maybe not up to current standards. All the best!

@@Ezrabastian I think it is halfway down for it to focus and fully down with the shutter in order to take the picture. How the camera responds depends on the mode selected (tripod vs hand-held). There is a diagram page 89 in the manual that illustrates it (link here: download.nikonimglib.com/archive2/JCLag00oVq1V01uV7j850WxvZ217/D700_EU(En)04.pdf) - maybe it actually explains it better than I do 🙂

@frederikboving I ordered d700. I think it's better to skip live view altogether, at this point. I'll set auto iso and aperture priority, and hopefully fix irregularities in post raw files. Hard to believe in 2008 camera tech was so far behind. Makes me appreciate my old trusty sony a6000. What Sony achieved with a $600 camera vs. $3000 d700 with no video. Puzzling!

Live view is just so handy coming to MF. I guess it should be used when you want to focus to the pixel. It only matters to very critical shots, or if you're a pixel peeper. Again photography is not about sharpness, so in most cases just eyeball with viewfinder and be done with it.

Coming from mirrorless cameras brute force high speed focusing (AF and focus peaking) experience the live view of D700 is kind of "refreshingly lovely". I especially love hand held mode where you can use the fast AF with live view. Since I am a new D700 user, too, here is my contribution, the first video of a three-part series of using a $20 WIFI CF card with D700: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp-apJhuhKxsetk The Shoot and View in STA mode is especially great, better than any built-in wifi of recent cameras.
