Discussing the viability of a Nikon D7100 as a tool for a working photographer in 2020.
In an age of new tech coming out nearly every week, the word 'upgrade' doesn't mean much to many ordinary day-to-day working photographers.
More interesting questions are: "Will it pay for itself before lunchtime?", and "Can it be ridden hard and put away wet?"...
This video is aimed at anyone who wants to start a photography business in 2020 - but is on a tight budget...
Fact is, there's no need to spend a bunch of cash, at least not on a camera body.
Hard earned money is better spent on lenses, lighting, external hard drives, strong liquor, etc.

Long time happy owner (from new) D7000, the reviews of D7100 have convinced me to make the jump. Maybe a D800 would be a great full feature second acquisition, but the D7200/D7500 don't interest me. Legacy lens support is huge to me.

Really great review. I own a d7100, bought it new a year after it came out. I typed it in the search of KZbin to hear a great reason to keep using it and to not fall into the gear head mindset and spending a lot of money on the latest toy, that seem to only last for 6 months to year before a new version comes. Your video was the first and I glad and satisfied with the d7100. I just recently purchased a use Nikon F5 film camera, one the best Nikon ever made. Ivan Trnavac - thank you for your comment. My personal favorite lenses are Nikon Micro nikkors currently available quite cheaply. All f2.8 lenses - the 105mm and the 40mm or 60mm. I don't shoot any wider than 30mm for my needs - and for that I use Sigma 30mm f1.4 HSM. Also any Sigma Art lens is worth having, in any focal length. For portraits though, definitely Micro Nikkor 105mm 2.8 is my choice for the last few years - a great lens at a reasonable price I think. For zoom - Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR ii. Not cheap unfortunately...

Great video, brilliant to see such stunning photos with a D7100. I have one which I had bought to replace a D200 as a birding camera. However I have found the D7100 frustrating for birds in flight with really inconsistent results. So much so, I had replaced it with a D300s and had been planning to list it on Ebay. I must admit that I have not often shot bird-in-flight, so I wouldn't be able to comment with any authority on the D7100's capabilities myself - I certainly accept your words on the subject. I will say that I found the focus system on D7100 quite exacting to set up for what I used it for - and I went down a few blind alleys until I found what worked for me. I think I view the D7100 as a jack of all trades camera really 😊

I have found the D7100 produces some great images but I am wondering if my mistake in photographing birds in flight was shooting in burst mode and it just struggled to keep up. If I am using RAW files in burst mode its results on birds in flight aren't as as good, JPEG seems better but I prefer the flexibility of RAW for post production work in Lightroom. But moving forward I will try in single-shot mode and see how it goes. I hate to give up on it, because it's a great piece of kit.

Great video. Very informative. Out of curiosity I looked on Amazon for the Nikon Right Angle Viewfinder and was surprised to see the DR 6 for £256! Cost as much as your camera body (if that is the same model). Although I’m sure you would’ve found it cheaper somewhere.

two years ago my father bought this camera for me and I've been using it for landscape and portrait. love it. And I agree, invest in lens rather than body. every year or two there'll be new camera body with little upgrade but a great lens always a great lens

I mean seriously 😳…. I got mine brand new in 2013 since then shot not much dew to several reasons. But from last few months thinking to upgrade but only factor stoping me to doing so it is the price and devalue too much. Cut the long story short I really appreciate your effort to made review for Nikon D7100 n from now going to have it with me for another years and will get another separate mirror less body 😊. N again I absolutely agreed with the fact invest in glass and i’m still using my 15/16 years old glass and work great so far with some new glass. Nothing wrong with the D7100 in my opinion. High-res files, great autofocus, good dynamic range, compatible with old Nikkor lenses - which is a big plus for me - and light to carry arround. You're dead on regarding sharpness, the resolution is so high that it demands absolute solid technique and/or a tripod to really get that extra detail. I use it mainly for macro photography and I'm more than happy with the results.

Bought mine last year when KEH did a 15% off Nikon bodies sale. Got it like-new for around $300, was an "upgrade" from a D3400. Absolutely love this camera. Use it mostly for wildlife and it works pretty well. I have been eyeing a D500 but with so many buying up cameras now that they are stuck at home and need a new hobby, hard to find one for a decent price.

That's a great price, and yes I agree - D500 would probably be a good fit for your purposes. As for prices - I initially thought that this lockdown might mean cameras at lower prices on the used market, but as you say, that's not how it's looking...

The only reason for me to consider replacing my seven year's old D7100 is the weight. It weighs 2.6 lb with the kit lens 18-140 mm. Yet I find those new mirrorless cameras like Lumix S 5 or Nikon Z5 with the kit lens are not so light as expected. After watching your video, I will keep my D7100 for another seven years or more. Yes I tried one or two mirrorless in the early days - Sony A7R was my first try - I needed a battery grip due to the bad battery life, so add that and an L lens and adapter and it was as heavy as anything else... but I have a Lumix G85 though and that thing weighs nothing with a native lens.

When I take photos at events (Skis) I have an A6500 with a 70-300m lens which works perfectly. My problem that I now discovered is when these skiers get closer, I need to be able to quickly have a different lens. So an secondary camera would help alot. Of which I am now looking at this particular camera, as it seems to hold the measure of my goal and the price is reasonable(Mabye not as fast compared to my A6500) but still.

Very wise video. We share the same camera philosophy. Here I am in 2022, a working motion photographer who uses a D7100 when my check depends on getting the still images and there is no second chances. My run and gun one man style makes me carry only what i need. I work outside often in heat way over 30c, chalky dust, heavy rain. The camera keeps going after the full frame Canon R5 gives up. I often been tempted to let the Nikon go but I can't as it proves to be my insurance when the shots count. It is also the one I carry when i travel and have to stuff one in a backpack with 2 lenses or in my saddlebags for my long road trips. Activating the crop function gives me almost double focal lengths which extend my reach when i can not get closer.Yeah like you, I need to buy a low shutter count one to replace the high mile beast that keeps me fed. Needless to say I am a new subscriber to your channel. Look forward to your posts.

From this eighty four year old, thanks for getting rid of the bullshit. From my first brownie, through Ilford Sportsman via Miranda and Pentax Sf1 to Nikon D3200, sales pitches are sometimes outrageous in the claims. I finally purchased a D7100 with very low shutter count for a very reasonable price. It is a fantastic camera. It does virtually everything well. Battery life is good as is the handling. There is no real advantage in buying the latest camera in this range. Sure, the D7500 will have some features extra. But, is it worth spending a pile of money when this will do just as well for considerably less money? And, yes, spend the savings on glass.

Hi, this was a good honest review. I bought a D7100 new around 5 years ago, 2 years later I bought another but secondhand with under 5k clicks on it for £300. Still very pleased with the results I'm getting with these two bodies. Any chance of doing a review on the Nikon D200 (my previous camera) say in your line of photography please. This is a great idea for a feature, showing there's life in some of the older cameras out there.

I was looking for a camera to replace a d90 I bought new back in 09 to be able to do larger prints or crop compositions without losing too much detail. Picked up one of these 7100s and what a nice camera. The one thing and it’s with all of them maybe I am defective but I still like a split screen focuser. I always loved that about the old manual cameras. I had a nice ground glass one I paid a premium for back in 09 for the d90. I was fortunate it fit the d7100 because the company that made it went out of business years ago.

Just my personal opinion - if I were you I'd go for a D800 really. They are a reasonable price used now and are superb cameras. I can't honestly comment on D610 or D750 as I've no experience with them. The 610 is fairly cheap now, but having used a D800 (E) for 3 years I can recommend it.

The D7100 is one of the finest DSLR cameras made thus far. Adequate functions and facilities and perfect sensor of APS-C at 20Mp. I love mine and as I'm 'getting on a bit' I'll never go to mirrorless.

The Nikon D7100 camera is still a very capable camera to this day, very well built, and easily the quality of some of Nikon's pro cameras. The D7100 merely lacks a bit of sophistication, such as more sophisticated auto-focus capabilities, and a super fast buffer. It's the best DX camera ever made by Nikon.

I have a D7100 for many years now, i do macro with it, + D3 for a sports and wildlife, best money, tanks of a Nikon, long battery. For what i shoot realy i dont see the slightest reason to buy camera of more price, yeah they do have better qualities and stuff, but i am not limited by my cameras so far. Love videos of older cameras, so nice to see people who review the stuff they love, not the iones they paid for. Interesting if you still with d7100 in 2022?

I have a D7000 and an old D300 but, like you said, with some good glass you can take some good pictures! But for birding and cropping the extra pixels of my D800 come in handy. And you're right, all that pixel peeping and now the mirrorless hype is a bit over the top for me. Gives us the opportunity to buy some good cameras second hand. I haven't explored even half of the possibilities the cameras are capable off anyway!

2024 checking in.. my D7100 outshoots my Sony A7R ii so good I'm trading the Sony for a D810 because the colors from DSLR's are so freakin awesome not to mention the dynamic range of a DSLR. Yes people i traded my mirrorless for a mirror because it's not about noise and all the extra mirrorless fluff for me.

Bayou Josh - Yep for sure. I used to have 2 D7100's as my main equine photography workers, but a strap mount pulled clean out of the body on one in mid-shoot. (Juggling 2 cameras while shooting fast action - I can't afford such a failure!). This was the only reason I stopped using them really - other than that they were perfect.

Interesting question Shaun. I have absolutely no knowledge on the subject unfortunately, forgive me. All I can say is that being a regular user of 'out of date' cameras - I haven't personally experienced such a failure with any of them, yet. Maybe someone else might chime in here with the relevant knowledge.

Roy Ragnar - Way to go, good choice, and wise. Now then... editing software... I still use Adobe Photography Package even though I'm not a working 'pro' these days - though I'll probably cancel it when my annual subscription ends. It costs £9.99 a month by the way, includes Lightroom & Photoshop etc., and I'm so used to it that I will miss it. It is a terrific setup in my opinion. However, I have a free recommendation: Download RawTherapee for your raw processing - it looks quite daunting when you first start but there are great tutorials on you tube - it is a very powerful raw processing tool though. Then for further image manipulation (using layers etc like Photoshop) download GiMP. It works in tandem with RawTherapee and together they are very powerful. I used to use these two for pro work before I went the Adobe route. Both are free downloads. Hope this helps you Roy.

Hi Chiranjit - There is no straightforward answer to that comparison really. But I'll try! If you want a strong robust weather sealed body to shoot in all weathers - landscape work for instance - a camera that will serve you not only as a beginner, but will continue to be satisfactory as you become proficient... D7100. If you want a smaller lighter camera, no weather sealing, simpler to use but still immensely capable and with good video capabilities also - Canon 200Dii (250D) SL3.

Harryflatters - yeah that's a tough one... I came close to picking up a D600 but was not too thrilled with the old 'oil spatter' problem with the shutter/sensor. D610 apparently provides the fix though - basically the same body but less, er, oily..? But in the end I went for the D800E instead for my full frame needs. Makes a good useful team with D7100. Hope that helps...

@@loneshootr The D600 can be repaired for free if you take it to a camera shop. They just modify the problem so it becomes a D601 (or D610, whatever they call it). I have a D600, D700 and D710 that I got from my father after he passed. I'd probably go with the D600 because it's full frame, except I only have DX lenses and you need the FX lenses in order to shoot full frame properly on it. Debating on getting the glass for it if I can find a good price. Otherwise, I'll just stick with the D7100 for now.

Really like your video. Thank you for sharing your advice on the matter. I own the d7100 and thinking upgrading to a full frame for better quality and shots at darker environment. With d7100 I have serious trouble in low light situations. I've tried f1.8 lenses, but still not satisfied. Also autofocus problems even with high shutter speed and adjustments in camera settings. Maybe I still do something wrong...

Hm... not sure about the autofocus trouble - I've always found it to be satisfactory. Depending on the lens, shooting wide open apertures - 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 etc., challenges any af system sometimes. Experiment with AF settings in camera - it really pays off with a D7100. The wrong settings for your needs in any given situation can cause all sorts of issues. What is your specific low light problem? High ISO noise in images?

@@loneshootr thank you for your reply. Yes too much noise and poor compensation at post editing. No way to shoot anything descent when the sun is down, only with tripod. But let's say I want some quick urban shots or something caught my eye.. I try with f1.8d 50mm to take portraits and it's very hard to produce a sharp image even with good light, high shutter speed and trying to be super steady. I can't figure out how people shoot super sharp portraits at f1.8 and what I am doing wrong.

@@dionisiosmelogiannidis5350 That's interesting you say you can't get get sharp images even in good light... it's possible you have a bad 50mm 1.8D lens - I have two, and the first one I got was so soft at 1.8 it was unusable. I had a 1.4D that was the same. It's always worth seeing if it can be improved by calibrating the camera to the lens - 'fine tune'. There are many you tube videos on the subject. It's worth trying first. As for the digital noise - it is an old sensor now so won't be up to modern standards of course, but I have shot up to 1600 ISO and the images cleaned up well enough - but if you're going much above that, then yes, maybe time to upgrade to a more modern camera body. I have to say though, I have shot many times in poor light and exposure and shadow recovery in Lightroom has always been satisfactory for me with the D7100.

@@loneshootr I never set iso higher than 800, 1000 if very necessary. It's always about the light. With good light comes a clean image obviously even with higher ISO. But I find it very inconvenient not being able to use at lower light. For example I could never take a shot from a performance at the theatre. I was trying to use the existing light , but in order to get a usable shot I should raise shutter speed and then it goes domino.. too high ISO and wide-open f.. not possible... There I thought ff, bigger sensor more light.. higher ISO and usable

Are you using "Matrix" metering? Also, I may be misunderstanding you, but it sounds like you're saying you increase the shutter speed for low light when it should be the opposite. Again I may be misunderstanding.

Hi, love your videos. I am new to photography and just bought a D7100. It comes with a 18-140mm lens. I bought it because it was on sale ($549, without tax, bought it at military exchange). I want to be a freelance photojournalist, but some people are saying that a D3500 or D5600 is better. Or, maybe I should get a better lens? Would like to know what you think.

AmbientRanger - the 18-140 AF-S is a great and capable all rounder, you'll find it very useful if you go towards photojournalism. You'll probably have to deal with less than ideal lighting situations from time to time - so a Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC HSM for low light work would come in useful... If budget is very limited, a basic AF Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens would help you a lot. (The D7100 has the focus drive to operate the older AF lenses as well as AF-S lenses). As for the body - D7100? You bought exactly the right one 😎

Awesome review! Is the camera suitable for 24x36" prints with amazing detail from close viewing distance? Does it produce stunning colors SOOC or during image editing? Can it rival Nikon D800 if shooting at ISO100 only with sharp lens and stitching images for panoramas? I would like to print landscapes on metallic papers behind acrylic glass where colors and details matter a lot.

Well, I've had many high quality 3ft x 2ft prints from a 7100 - but only if the lens quality is high. For extreme detail and 6ft x 4ft prints I used to use a D800E but again, the lens matters far more than the body really. In my experience of making large prints, most cameras are more than capable if paired with good glass and the image is well shot. I've always made large prints for my type of work and my 12mp 5D worked just fine 😎

Most photographers don`t print large and they always say "you don`t need much dpi because of the viewing distance" but in my case I need fine detail from very close distance becauste the product asks for premium price. Would you recommend a simple lens like Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S as perfect for resolving fine detail for 24x36" prints? I ahve heard stories about gorgeous prints at the same size from 5D classic and knew it had to do with the weak AA filter but still most photograpers do not care at super fine detail because of the viewing distance. Is it possible to achieve my goals with a 5D and a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II as well?

@@Classicdslr I can really only speak of my own experience in this and I can't actually remember what I thought of the 35 1.8G AF-S... The best results I had were using a D800E with any of the later MicroNikkor range of lenses - in particular the 105 2.8. As you know, the D800E - although it does still have an AA filter - the AA filter is 'neutralised'. Having said that, the difference is just about imperceptible in 99% of shots! D7100 has no AA but I never saw the difference... When I've been aiming for fine detail in a shot to printed large, obviously I've avoided the wider apertures so I never felt the need to pay for superfast lenses in this respect. As for the 5D and 50mm - viewing distance rules will apply. If I'm reading you right, you need a setup to enable perceptible fine detail at way less than normal viewing distances. To obtain that 'clinical' sharpness is about the only time I would ever suggest a high megapixel count to be honest. I think if I was in your shoes I'd be looking for a good used 5DSR together with any of the lenses which can resolve what that sensor is capable of - 100mm f2, 50mm f1.8 being the cheapest pair - plus L lens range. (I did own a 5DSR and it is still a phenomenal camera regardless of its age). Second choice would be D800E and Micro Nikkor lenses. I hope this is of some use. Drew

Have read Nikon D800 has multiple issues so D800E should be the minimum from Nikon`s side. Have also read 5Dsr has limited dynamic range and not so good colors when shadows are lifted. I know most people who write those things do not even print but hearing the oposite opinion from someone who actually prints and deffinitely knows how to shoot and edit images I bet you are right. Dionisios Melogiannidis That Sigma is a fine lens. Lenses I recommend are any of the Micro Nikkor 2.8 lenses - 40mm and 105mm in particular. The 105mm is superb for portraits. Thank you for watching, and for taking the time to comment - I really appreciate it.

william Oneill - I'm not really qualified to answer with any authority on the subject I'm afraid - sorry William. I outsource all my printing to a trusted print lab I've used exclusively for my pro work. When I was considering a printer I did look at the Canon PROGRAF PRO-300 but decided against it - I only produced prints for clients who paid in advance so it seemed pointless to spend the money on something that could go wrong lol...

Alfred - Everyone will have a different view on this - but I can only speak for lenses I actually use, and for wide angle interior work - real estate for example - I use a Sigma 14mm f2.8 EX HSM. It is rectilinear and so it shows minimal distortion to straight lines. I have heard good things about the Samyang 14mm f2.8 manual focus lens, but I have not tried one - so I can't say for sure. Mckenzie Davenport - I'm surprised you can't find a D7100 cheaper - you'll spot one at the right price soon enough I'd guess. In all honesty, I can't give a helpful opinion on video on the D7100 as I only tried video once. The footage was ok, but not the greatest. Auto focus in video is an issue too... I have seen competent video by others using the D7100, but I really see it as a stills camera to be honest - there are so many better options for video on a budget now.

NadiaMavenOfMotivation - I believe that if you repeatedly press the 'info' button to scroll through the display options you'll eventually see a clean output display - certainly for external monitors/recorders.
