Hello and welcome to my official review of the Nikon D850 full frame Dslr camera. In this video I will go over allot of the major features of the D850 camera. I will show you some sample images and also some 4k video clips aswell.
I will also give you my thoughts on the D850 why this camera is the ultimate tool for professional photographers.

The Nikon D850 is known and has a following as one of the best DSLR out today. Yes today. It launched in 2017 and still rocks in 2021.

This is the best still camera I have ever used bar none. Mirrorless is nice but my 850 blows them away. There is no debate. I have used them all Leica, hassey, mamiya and rollei don't care this blows them all away. Thanks for letting me blow off steam. D850 RULES.

Hello. Your real world reviews over time is still relevant. My first venture to Nikon was only a few days ago, Nikon d800. After editing photos from my niece holiday play; I'm really impressed. It has a unique character. I'm invested in some Canon and Sony gear. I can see myself investing in a good used Nikon D850 because I'm really enjoying learning something new with great results. Just ordered ours with grip, (Grays of Westminster, London, highly recommended) been using D800's that are terrific, couple of features on this camera that look useful apart from printing to gallery size prints. Mainly still life, product, fine art. Skipped the 810 as the D800 do what we want. To think even the D850 is now 5 years old. The D800 even older but just as brilliant and useable. Love Nikon glass and Nikon chosen for the way it sits in the hand better than Cannon, so went with it. The reviews you give are useful, clean and to the point so thanks for sharing, will subscribe and take a look at others. Thanks

Thank you so much Baptiste KUHN!! Glad you enjoyed it. Im so glad I purchased the 400mm. Just thinking about using it and even realizing I own one puts a smile on my face. One of those lenses you know. Yes the 300 2.8 is also amazing. These 2 lenses along with the 200 f2 work the best with TC's x1.4 x1.u7 and x2. I even have the TC x2 II and it works amazingly. Ofcourse the TCx1.4 III is a gem of a TC and probably has the best optical and focus performance, but I cant wait to make the review and actually use some of the TC in the video. Should be fun. ohh yes and btw the D850 is a beast. hehe

Great review of the Nikon D850 DSLR camera, the 45.7 mp sure make the colors and details in the photos look good and you got some really good photos at the wedding which is awesome. I think your future review of the Nikon 400mm f2.8 VR will be really good, the lens sure sound really good being a very big focal length and at f2.8 Great video Vahagn, you rock.

You are very welcome. Glad you enjoyed the review. I could of posted portfolio highly polished shots but I believe images straight from the camera from 1 real world gig is more impactful. It really shows what this camera could do at the bare minimum. With great lighting it can be amazing. I set up a few off camera flashes at that reception party and as you can see the camera has a nice balance from those flashes and the available banquet hall light.

@@Vahagraphy I agree and it is the best and most honest way to show off what the camera can do. By the way, now that you mentioned it, one of my dilemmas currently is with some policies or rules regarding the placement of light stands and tripods in the city as they don't want you to block the side walks... I would love to do portraits using my strobes, but it seems I have to have a permit to shoot in certain places or be shoot at certain locations were you won't get fined or told to leave.. there are parks and places where I could shoot, but I have to be careful.. I guess I'll have to research and learn where I could shoot without being bothered. Let's see how it goes :)

@@felm.974 yes, this is a problem every photographer goes through. Im most parks its fine, but when you start getting into public places where there is allot of traffic. its might be a problem. Just use common sense, and remember, its not worth it getting into a fight for a photograph. just move on if you have to. not worth getting into it with authority.

I'm so happy that YOU did this review because I trust your opinion a lot and because you'r a real professional and not just a youtuber looking to gather clicks. There is so much talk recently about photographers moving to mirrorless cameras but to me as a hobby photographer this would be just too expensive as I have a very nice array of high end Nikon lenses acquired over the years for my D750. I don't know much about the adapter solution to ML but I think to get the full benefit you would need new lenses. I therefore bought a used D850 and I'm very happy but still leaning to get the best out of it. May be you could once do a shooting while using the flash a lot and talk about your thoughts and settings. Thank you, now let's rock and roll!

I've always loved your channel, Vahagn. Big fan. Love the focus, love the insights, love just the feel of the way you present (I'd buy merch, hint, hint!) Anyhow, I'm pretty new to photography but last year I bought a D850. Yep, above my experience grade. Yep, above my pay scale. Yep, above my needs as a full-time psychotherapist! But, you know, I had an opportunity - for a very brief moment - to buy gear and it had to be gear I needed to last, and the D850 was top of the list for the resolution and functionality and ahead-of-its-time-ness. I bought it not knowing a goddam thing about photography, but I needed to attempt to stretch my budget because it seemed like a camera that would last for years, which I need (I watched every review imaginable to attempt to ensure that the quality and feasibility would last). I love this camera, and I'm actually now attempting to save to buy another D850 because it is - as you allude to in the post - still one of the most amazing Nikon cameras ever issued, and I believe it will stand the test of time for another decade. As $$ are very tight again, if I can get a used unit with moderate use I will do so, because this camera is simply amazing. Thanks again for everything you share. Keep it real, dude! And if I can ask one last thing, I would ask to see you actually do your thing, as you did recently with the couple on the beach /shore. Those shots were amazing. Theory is great; your practice is incredible. Be well.

You did good jumping right to the best right from the beginning. Never quit photography. I would hate to see your D850 sitting and collecting dust. keep on learning and making images. Same boat here but about a year before the D850 came out. D810. I knew right away after taking a few photos why. You really need to be on your game with the high MP. For a hobbiest, the D750, D700 orD7100 would of been plenty being the only other digital I owned (plus what I knew about photography) was a point & shoot 5.6mp Oly. I could of waited another 2 weeks for the D500 to start hitting the store shelves which would of been a good move being I like to shoot Birds in flight. No regrets, I still haven’t used the D810’s full potential as far as features goes. Haven’t decided yet, might pick up a D500 as an addition or a D850 & run them till they drop. The only concern is getting parts for them. I do believe if the Z9 is as successful as the D4S, D5/D6 or D850, Nikon won’t put out anymore DSLR cameras. Like film to digital was, I believe Mirrorless is the future and parts for the DSLR cameras will be hard to get in a few years. By law, they only have to supply parts for 7 years. D850=2014. The camera should & most likely will last well beyond what they claim but, if it doesn’t ????

I'll think on it. Recently went from D800E to D810 - so earliest I'd likely get the D850 would be towards the end of the year. But - I'm also considering a Nikon mirrorless, but I won't get both. I have and shoot a Sony a6000, but it's not everything I'd want - still prefer DSLR. Good review, it adds to my input in future decision making.

The D810 is a beast. Sure the D850 is amazing and sometimes we want more toys to play with hehe. My D800 has been awesome for me, spot of focus. ol mr reliable camera. A few things I like that they did on the D850 vs the D800, getting rid of that on camera flash. Finally. hehe, I hate that thing. I never use it and it gets in the way sometimes when shooting , I press the button on accident , or when storing, the flip screen is awesome aswell. and ofcourse the colors and the image the D850 renders.

Vahagn: I bought the D850 in December 2019. Nikon threw in the battery grip for free. It was also on sale down to $2,599 and the $400 grip was FREE, so I couldn't pass it up. I agree with those who've said this is the best DSLR ever brought to market. Happy New Year!

ahh so you bought it at the right time. That magic sale month. I remember that. Perfect time to buy. This camera is a legend. Are you getting the Z9? and when and if you do, what happens to your D850?

Vahagn, As you know from my comments elsewhere and in my emails to you, I have yet to transition to the Z mount. However, if and when I do go mirrorless, I believe I will skip the Z6s and 7s and go right to the Z9. But and this is a big but, I don't earn my living like you do from photography and my current shooting style doesn't even include video so, my need for mirrorless and its capabilities isn't a pressing necessity at this time. If I buy a Z9, I plan to keep my D850 and D750 as back-ups. I do plan to buy the FTZ II adapter BEFORE I go mirrorless so as to be able to use my large collection of F mount glass.

Good choice! D850 brings me happiness hehe. Same here, Im looking down the road for maybe a D5 or even D6. But not now. I have my D4 which I will never part with. but If I can find a deal thats really to good to pass up on A d5 or D6, I will take it asap. Yes,, This is one of my dream lenses to own and I finally purchased one. I saw one for sale on my local market and I had to jump on it. Just the case alone costs $500 big ones to replace and the hood another $600. hehe. The lens is heavy yes but I don't plan on hand holding it at all. Tripod and monopod for sure. I might get a wimberley head. This was one of my dream lenses to own and now finally I have one. Im also eyeing a 200 f2 vrii. We shall see. but yes. super excited. I've shot with it the other day using the 1.4X tcIII nikon and its flawless. 540mm @f4. basically turns my lens into a 600 f4. Also tried the older TCII 2x on it, surprisingly enough with the lens it worked amazingly well. 800mm at 5.6. Focus was still fast and snappy. Amazing how fast this lens is. This is why you pay the big bucks. All in all super excited to finally call my self an owner of the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 VR lens. Hey I even have a few camo lens coats lol

I am ready to buy the camera grip, but cant find the batteries and the battery charger anywhere. I dont want to use the AA batteries you can use, I believe it takes 8 of them. It’s the rechargeable ones that I cant find - the EN-EL18. Any ideas on an alternative?

I bought my D850 in December 2019 when Nikon also threw in the vertical grip battery pack for FREE. The body was on sale for $2,499.95 and the grip costs $399.95 so it was like getting $900 OFF! How much better than that short of free can you get? It made my purchase decision so much easier. Great review on the camera! This camera is STILL the best DSLR ever put on the market regardless of manufacturer! Don't believe me? Ask JOE MCNALLY!

Is there a way to fire the shutter remotely? I have the D850 but also have the D7200. With the 7200, I have a little remote button I attach to the camera strap whenever I need to take group shots that I'm in. Please help! :) Great review by the way. I love my D850. Just got it last week.

Congrats Minkymott on the D850. Amazing camera. not sure if this will work, it works well on my Z6, but try this, connect your camera to snap bridge via your smart phone and try that, or they sell kits to fire the D850 remote. they have several just google d850 remote trigger or something of that nature. My camera is at the studio at the moment to I cant test the snap bridge, or else I would of , but try that and let me know if it worked.

Thank you Lem. The D850 is a photographers ultimate camera. I can just imagine the D850 having AF performance when DOING VIDEO like a 1DXIII, ahhh it would be a perfect hybrid camera. As far as still photography is concerned its close to perfect.

I’ll probably upgrade my d7200 I’ve been using for photo school for the past 4 years to a d850 when I get into the pro fine art world, I’ve tried some mirror less cameras but I’m still a bigger fan of dslrs

The D850 is the best High mpixel DSLR camera ever made in my opinion and the opinion of other pros. Good choice.. You won't be regret it. For still photography that is. If you want to shoot hybrid with good AF while doing video look into a mirrorless camera. Z7ii or Z6ii

I am more of a Hobbyist/Aperture than a professional photography, but I love to take pictures of my grandkids and whenever I travel to the North Carolina mountains to take pictures of the fall foliage. I'm currently using a Nikon D800 and thinking on upgrading to the Nikon D850. Would this camera be a good choice? I do wish the D850 had a better autofocus system, more like the Canon R5 has. I only use my cameras for still shots, not video, I use my iPhone for video.

Hello Freddie. I have both cameras. d800 and 850, are you happy with the d800 results? the d850 camera will deliver richer blacks and more of a punchier image. its faster to focus and a much more modern advanced camera. it focuses faster and tracks better. how much better? well the D800 is great already. the 850 has no AA filter so you will get a sharper image. all this said and I still use my D800. both cameras are great. I just have a certain love affair with my D800. If you can find one at a great price sure. go for it. you wont be dissapointed at all with the upgrade.

Ohh nice. You use the D lenses with fuji adapter. How are the results on a medium format fuji sensor?

@@Vahagraphy 60 2.8 D is my favorite, I think the tone and colours more natural than full frame camera. Also no dark in the corner. The reason I bought 50r is the zeiss 100mm zf, it quite beautiful images.

Great camera, firmware can be upgraded to use CF Express if required. I use the XQD cards in my D4S

ohh yes that is correct. I too use XQD cards on my D850, D4 and Z6. XQD cards are fast enough for me and have always been reliable.

Hello sir , I have a question , I am more of a photography enthusiastic not a professional by any means , I currently own a D750 with couple of 2.8 lenses that I bought second handed. My question would moving to D850 be a better option? or shall I hold off till the mirrorless world get more matured? Note : I am mainly into landscape , cityscape and low light shooting. humm. first I would go and try a mirrorless and see if you like it. The EVF, and handling of a camera. If a friend owns one try this or go into you your best buy pick it up. You would get a better feel for it if you spent a day with one. if you think its not for you, I would go with a D850 for sure. for landscape and cityscapes yes the D850 rocks. One thing I can say is, the fact that you are not heavily invested in lenses. you can make the switch anytime. Check out the Z7 as awell.

very tough question, very tough. but, since I have a long history with the D4 and since the D4 has worked for me for 10 years without a hick up. I would choose the D4. Pro body, better battery, smaller files., faster frame rates. higher shutter rating, I would choose the D4 over the D850.

@@Vahagraphy A timely question and response. I am using a D4s and a D810. Have been eyeing the D850. However your reply is spot on. Would like a newer, updated camera but now just shooting for myself I just can not pull the trigger for a 850. I have looked at the ML systems but gosh the DSLR's seem to be made stronger and the F mount lenses for my work have and still produce colorful and sharp images. As the saying goes everything new gets old.

If you can afford it, I'd say just get this camera even if you're a beginner. You'll be upgrading down the road anyway, so why not just start off with what you'll eventually end up with. And you won't be losing money in the upgrade process.

Thats a good way of looking at it. Learn with the best if you can afford it. The only thing is, sometimes as a beginner., they start, they are excited about learning photography, and then they stop taking pictures and put the camera away and this great camera does not get used at all. With anything, there is a learning curve. some get frustrated, but this is why I make videos, for beginners to learn and never get tired of it. :)

Great review! The detail and crispness are obviously amazing, but I think my D4S still has a bit more "life" to its images. I see the D850's colors and dynamic range and I go "Okay that looks really good," but when I look at the images out of the D4S my jaw hits the floor. And it's only 16mp, a huge relief for my computer and my memory cards! Still, the D850 is a much more reliable performer than any mirrorless.

Hello Steven, I feel the same way about my D4. 16 mpixel and still rocks. 2 different cameras. For certain shoots I will use a D4. The D4 files look "filmlike" This is why I never sold my D4. The ultimate workhorse.

Good video. Useful info. Nice sample pix. I used to work on Cruises in the 80’s🚢 I’ve recently bought a barely used D850. (28k shutter releases indoor use for archiving). So I’ve got a learning curve ahead of me. I’ve used Nikon gear since 1985. Several different bodies. Still got Good F-Mount glass 😎 Hence why I don’t want to get a mirror less camera anytime soon. So I got the best quality camera for my needs. This should see me out. I’m 63 now. I’ve still got a FM2 from 1988. Quality lasts. I’ll be using it for Fine Art and Macro work. If I was getting the D850 today, I would keep the D800E as a backup, 1. because you wont get much for it in the used market vs how much you paid, a 2, its good to have a solid back up camera. and 3. The D800E is an amazing camera.

@@kaminobatto It cannot focus correctly, regardless of mode, AF tuning, + or -, only makes it worse that was using their latest 70-200 2.8. Images are very noisy at anything over 200 ISO. Poor dynamic range. Fiddling in Picture control really does nothing except make it worse. Out of 10,000 images(more than 1/2 for trying to calibrate/adjust the god damn thing), less than 40 are acceptable. The D800 and D810 I had before this Pile of Shit had a yield of over 85%. If I didn't have a fortune in Nikon Glass, I would just walk away from it, and switch brands. Nikon has had it for about a month now... They can keep the god damn thing

I'd like to upgrade to the 850 from my 800, though I'd keep the 800. The only issue is $$$. The battery in my D800 will last all day if I don't use the rear screen. It runs down fast if I focus on the screen too much. I A used D800 would be a good bet for a beginning photographer, or one that's learned how to handle a camera. I Predacedessor (speling?) Mens pre, before, you're using it backwards.

Hello Romie. Yah, I was so excited reviewing this camera I got it backwards. I should of said successor. haha. Good catch on that one. I use my D800 allot even now in 2021 for professional jobs. A used D800 is a killer camera for a beginner. The D850 is a huge upgrade, one that you actually see the difference in picture quality vs the D800. D850 is so good you hardly see this camera going down in price after 4 years after launch. Its that good.

I really dont get it. What more you need for great photos. Its like people are running after gear rather than taking shoots. @@Vahagraphy Oh man, that definitely affected a lot of people. I grew up listening to Rush as my dad was a huge Rush fan so of course I was too. My first concert I ever went to was to see Rush during their Vapor Trailers tour back in 2002 when I was about 15-16 (back when I was heavy into drumming). What a frigging show! That show was the first tour after a 6-year hiatus after Neil lost his wife and daughter. I'm happy I was able to see them live and have some part of that history.

The D810 is what the D800 should have been. There js no benefit to buying it over the D810. As for the D850, it is a little better than the 810. I wouldnt buy a D850 in 2021. I would sooner get a Z6ii...... as a back up.

Maybe you can find a D800 a little cheaper than the D810. Thats one benefit. D810 is a good upgrade to the D800. The D850 in my opinion is a whole different camera. Different sensor, the files look very different. Depends on the look you are after. In certain situation I prefer the look for the D800. In others I like the D850. The blacks are def richer on the D850. higher pixels. A huge upgrade. Video and so on, but I would not lump the D850/d810-d800 in the same category. They are just 2 different cameras.
