I'm really burned out with all this stand on one foot, select the auto focus dial, rotate it to, while patting yourself on the head.... Today doing a web search just brought a lot of 'Oh, you have to..." and not one, 'thanks that fixed it." I'll never forget using Photoshop in 1992, I got it to work, everything took forever, it crashed all the time, but I was good at it... and it sent me right into the darkroom where I did chemical b&w photography for most of the next ten years. Not once did my darkroom crash for absolutely no reason. Anything that was a problem, I figured out and fixed.

@@michaildamaskos7045 I work for a vfx company. Most of the hdri I do are done with 7 exposures. So no, 3 is not an option... All for portraits and sport photography. At work I have Canon 5D mk IV and a R5c. I must say that for fast bracketing and mega 360 hdri with a nodal ninja head, Nikon is not even close to Canon. The video instructs to set to Aperture Priority mode to ensure that it isn't set to Shutter Priority (which would make the depth of field vary between the bracketed shots). However, using Manual mode is even better, since you have full control over the settings and can decide the optimal shutter speed to set for the middle (0EV) exposure of the bracketed series.

Yes, set the camera on the CH mode to switch it to "continuous shooting" (as shown at 2:38 in the video) when you using a wireless shutter remote. At the same time, make sure that the wireless remote is also switched to "continuous". Once they are both in sync, press and hold down the button of your remote shutter release and all 3 photos will be taken.

We shoot in manual, but can’t use the motor drive due to the technology we have linked into the camera. Finally my question... Is it possible to set a function button or bracket feature to change the aperture 3 stops Down. When in heavily wooded areas, sometimes our subject are above the canopy and sometimes they are not. The difference is stark, but fairly consistent. Since we only have about 2-3 seconds on every subject, I am finding it difficult to roll the wheel to adjust for the change in Aperture Can I set a function button to do this, or do you have any creative solutions? Just thought I would pick the brain of someone who has mastered Nikon. Thank you for your time!

@Jon Miller Yes, you need to press and hold the shutter button to take all images. Using the self-timer to trigger bracketing takes all exposures at once with one button press, and avoids camera shake when the camera is on a tripod or steady ground.

Can you please help me on what I am doing wrong?
@PhotomatixHDR3 жыл бұрын
I am glad it helped! The normal exposure does not have to be at the zero marker. Its position depends on the available light and what you wish to achieve with your bracketing. Mostly I tend to offset the normal exposure towards the overexposed side supposed the dark exposures cover all highlights well. However, to do so I don't use Exposure Compensation, but the shutter speed. To switch off bracketing also make sure shooting mode on the lower ring of the mode dial is set from CH/CL back to S. To reset the number of shots to 0, turn the main command dial (at your right thumb) to the left while holding and pressing down the BKT button.

Bracketing can be used better by placing camera on tripod or without tripod ?
@PhotomatixHDR4 жыл бұрын
It depends. If you only need three exposures and the light conditions allow for sufficiently short shutter speeds, i.e. shorter than 1/60 or 1/125 sec, you can take the bracketed photos hand-held. Photomatix will align the photos automatically for you. Otherwise, with 5 or more exposures, I'd recommend using a tripod to eliminate camera shake while exposing with long shutter speeds and to avoid misalignments (even though Photomatix can still align the photos). Working from a tripod yields better results. Switching the image stabilizing to off is important when working from a tripod.

It should be possible to do that by going to the 'Custom Settings' menu (via the 'pen' icon on the left hand side of the setup menu). Got one question. If you have taken multiple bracketed images on a day, how do you sort them? Is there a way to automatically create a folder for every set of bracketed image? Or it has to be done manually?
@PhotomatixHDR4 жыл бұрын
I sort the bracketed sets manually but only per location not each set in one folder. Photomatix Pro offers a solution for this situation: When processing multiple bracketed sets with Photomatix' batch there is a function that picks only one set of bracketed photos per go either on a given and fixed number of photos in a set, or by separating the sets reading the capture time. The latter allows to process sets with a varying number of exposures in each set. You find this option in Batch Bracketed Photos > Bracketed Selection > Advanced Selection Options. This way you don't have to sort the sets into individual folders. Some Raw converters offer to collect bracketed sets into individual stacks automatically.

The presentation is excellent, but pressing the shutter button may cause camera movement. You could use a remote cord to avoid vibration from pressing the shutter, but if you don't have the remote cord with you, there is a another way. Set the release mode to self timer. Set the time delay to about 3-5 seconds to allow vibrations from pressing the shutter release button to die down. Set the number of shots to the number of shots for the bracket (e.g. 3 or 5) and the interval between shots to 0.5 seconds or whatever value you want. To take the bracket press the shutter release; the camera waits for the set delay and then takes the shots. No cable release is necessary. Setting the release mode to self timer obviates the use of electronic first shutter (EFCS), which requires Q, Qc, or Mup, so if one wants to use EFCS a shutter release cord should be used with the original method described in the article.
@PhotomatixHDR4 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for the nice and comprehensive comment. In other videos of this kind we show the built-in self timer you suggested. You can use the camera's self-timer to avoid camera shake. To do that, proceed as follows once you've selected the number of bracketed photos: 1. Turn the Release Mode Dial to the ‘Timer’ function (between the Quiet Continuous and the Mirror Up icons) 2. Open the camera’s menu and navigate to the Custom Setting Menu (the pencil icon) 3. Select the 4th item down named 'Timers/AE Lock' 4. On the 'Timers/AE Lock' menu, select the 3rd item down named 'Self timer' 5. You'll be given a choice of 4 times: 20, 10, 5 and 2 seconds. Select the time you want and save it. You can now position your camera, press the shutter button and wait for the timer to count down. Your bracketed set will then be taken without any more camera shake.

I am sorry to hear about the black live view. You could try the following: - Set the aperture to a low F-stop value, e.g. f5.6 (shoot wide open for testing) or set the Movie Settings > Manual Movie Settings to OFF. - If the lens is an adapted or manual lens, make sure in the menu that lens corrections are set to off (they only work with Nikon lenses I assume and on other cameras I know of a semi-transparent black pattern is shown when using not-supported lenses) - Remove the lens and check if the mirror blocks the sensor (i.e. it did not fold up). But don't touch it no matter what state it is in. - If nothing helps at all reset the camera to factory settings (Caution: you will use all custom settings) Otherwise call your vendor. Good luck!

Hi Judy, You will need to separate the flashlight shot from taking the bracketed set using a remote trigger. In my setup, I use a flash remote trigger unit (e.g. a Yongnuo YN622N-KIT i-TTL for Nikon) which controls and triggers the camera and the flashlight. - I shoot the bracketing first. (group 1, i.e. no flashlight assigned to it). - Then before the second burst, I switch to the second group which has the flashlight assigned to it with the desired power setting and trigger the shot(s). This way you don't touch the camera while taking the different shots or in-between the two separate bursts, and can adjust the flashlight's power and position if necessary.

@@JudyGehrlich Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to the remote trigger unit I am using. It handles the groups. Saving settings in the D850 for different shooting scenarios have proven to be unreliable because they auto-update whenever a setting is changed.

If you're going to shoot a bracketed pano, is it still suggested to shoot in aperture priority mode, or switch to manual exposure? I'm actually not sure how or if bracketing works in manual exposure mode.
@PhotomatixHDR6 жыл бұрын
It's much better to switch to Manual Mode for panoramas, so that you have full control over the settings involved, such as the aperture, normal exposure, ISO and focus among others (bracketing with Aperture Priority would likely result in a different exposure/shutter speed used from one view to the next). Bracketing in Manual Mode works the same way as shown in the video.
@thebostonartist6 жыл бұрын
Okay, thanks. I knew setting the camera to manual exposure mode for panoramas was always best. I just wasn't sure if the camera would execute bracketing the same way in manual mode, as I have always done that in aperture priority, and I don't have too much practice with HDR-Pano. Thanks again.
@PhotomatixHDR6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works the same way. You set the shutter speed (which will become the 0 EV / 'middle' shutter speed of the bracket), then set how many 'over & under' shots to take.
@PhotomatixHDR6 жыл бұрын
I've got more info around your question after discussing with Ron Pepper, the HDR panorama specialist of our team. Here is what he said: "I normally recommends to use Manual Mode for panoramas although Aperture Priority Mode can work depending on what kind of panorama you are shooting and how you intend to process it. Using Manual Mode makes it possible to shoot each bracketed set the same way. In other words, you set the bracketing to capture the dynamic range of the scene -- the entire scene and not just the part that a single frame captures. This is best for the 'stitch-then-HDR' style of processing. But Aperture Priority can be ok if you use the 'HDR-then-stitch' style." More info on the HDR-then-stitch vs stitch-then-HDR here: www.hdrsoft.com/support/faq_photomatix.html#panos

So no need to use the hdrsoft.com/ev calculator, spot metering? Also you have the setting for metering on the second selection, use that one instead of spot metering and calculator with the d850? just 2 ev, and 3 shots?
@PhotomatixHDR5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the scene you shoot. The HDR exposure calculator is only needed for the most challenging high contrast scenes (e.g. an interior with a dark room and a small but very bright window) and when you need the highest quality. For less challenging interiors or when you don't need to see all details in the window's view, then 3 shots at 2 EV should be sufficient, and you can set the shutter speed by pointing your camera (in spot metering mode) to something in the room with an average brightness. See more details on this here: www.hdrsoft.com/real-estate/hdr-interior-tutorial-basic.html If your scene is a "standard" landscape or other types of outdoor scenes, then 3 shots at 2 EV are sufficient and there is no need to meter, as you can reply on the shutter speed your camera automatically set in those cases.

The automatic exposure bracketing function is independent of the selected file format of the photos. It can be performed with both Raw and Jpeg formats, even saving both formats at the same time is possible if the camera allows it.

Hi, can I lock focus to shoot brackketting with mode A, I shoot continue high (CH)?
@PhotomatixHDR6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it should be possible to lock the focus when the camera is set to Aperture Priority and Continuous High. If you have a lens which has a switch marked M (manual) and AF (autofocus), then make sure it is switched to M (manual), focus the lens to make your image nice and sharp and take the bracketed photos. The focus will be locked until you move it again.

@@chinhvannguyen1685 I see. In that case, it's actually possible to switch from AF to M on the camera itself, sorry that I hadn't realised that in my first reply. On the front left of the D850, there is a lever near the bottom that goes from AF to M with a button in the middle. Set the focus using the Auto Focus first, then switch the lever from AF to M to lock the focus. You can also switch the lever to M first, then focus manually.

how can I set the camera to do 3 bracketed photos every minute
@PhotomatixHDR5 жыл бұрын
As time-lapse movie recording doesn't work with AEB on the D850, I suggest to use Interval Timer Shooting described in this section of the manual: onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/d850/en/18_menu_guide_03_26.html and this section describes how to combine with Exposure Bracketing: onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/d850/en/11_exposure_07.html#exposure_and_flash_bracketing. Another option would be to acquire a device called Camranger, which can combine AEB with time-lapse shooting via an iOS or Android app: camranger.com/camranger-mini

Does the camera then blend them or do you stack them
@PhotomatixHDR5 жыл бұрын
When you take bracketed exposures, this is because you want to merge them in HDR software, as this gives you control over the number of exposures, their spacing, as well as the settings and look of the HDR image the HDR software creates (cameras that produce an HDR image directly do not give you much control normally).

Dies it take the 3 or 4 pics at the same time because I shoot seascapes and landscapes ...oceans move trees move
@PhotomatixHDR5 жыл бұрын
It takes the photos in very short succession, how fast depends on the camera's fps (Frames Per Second) feature. Most HDR software offer an option to remove the so-called 'ghosts' created by moving elements, such as ocean waves and tree leaves when it is windy. In Photomatix Pro, the option is called 'Remove ghosts' and the automatic variant of it is best for moving oceans and trees.

If you set it to CH, does it make any difference if you are in AF-S or AF-C focus mode?
@PhotomatixHDR6 жыл бұрын
It depends on your reason for setting CH (Continuous High). In this video, CH is set in order to take exposure bracketed photos. If you are taking bracketed photos, then you should set autofocus off, so the question wouldn't apply. If you aren't taking bracketed photos, and are using Continuous High to take a fast moving subject, then AF-C (continuous Auto Focus) is the recommended choice, since it will set the focus automatically for each photo of the burst.

@Subramanya C Oh, that sounds weird. Please contact our support team under support at hdrsoft.com.

You need to setup the BKT-button to AE bracketing, as the BKT-button can do several different bracketings eg. flash bracketing and white balance bracketing. Go into the menu an select the Photo Shooting Menu. Scroll down and select Auto Bracketing set. Set this to AE bracketing and now the BKT-button will do Exposure bracketing. Otherwise read the manual ;-) That way you will also find out that you are not limited to 3 exposures but also can do 5, 7 and 9 bracketing exposures.

is exposure compensation same with bracketing ?
@PhotomatixHDR4 жыл бұрын
If you refer to exposure compensation during bracketing, some cameras don't allow you to set exposure compensation when AEB is activated at the same time. If you like to offset the range of bracketed photos from the normal exposure for some reason, it would require to choose a higher or slower shutter speed than that at the zero/middle exposure. Alternatively, you could overshoot, which means to shoot more photos at both ends of the exposure range (e.g. shoot 7 instead of 5 bracketed photos) and later when processing drop the photos on one end of the range.
