The Nikon D40 is a consumer grade Nikon DSLR released in November of 2016. The Nikon D40 is a 6.1 megapixel crop sensor DSLR. They sell on Ebay for 39-150 dollars making the Nikon D40 a budget friendly option for anyone looking to get into photography at a reasonable price and allowing for further investment in lenses and equipment! In this video I took the Nikon D40 out with my Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens and my Yongnuo 50mm f1.8 prime lens. I have a few issues with the Nikon D40, but overall the camera performed extremely well and is a camera I would recommend to anyone looking for a budget friendly Nikon DSLR. This 2021 review is another one of our dives into the world of budget friendly beginner and used DSLRs. I have also started working on the Nikon D40 landscape and street photography reviews! I hope everyone enjoyed the video, don't forget to subscribe!

For your information, I've just gotten my D40 back and for as long as I can remember (like today aswell) I've been able to use it with a Kingston SDHC 16GB. Which means you might have to edit/disclaim that it's possible :) thanks for the review!

I'll have to check it with my other sd cards! Thanks for the heads up, it wouldn't work with my 10 gb sandisk so I figured it was like the d50 and d70 but it'll be worth trying it with a larger one!

I couldn't use a SD card higher than 2 Gig on a D50. Must have updated the D40 to allow larger capacity card

Of course you mean released in November of 2006 ;). Still got two of these, one with the 18-55, another one with the Nikkor 50 mm 1.8. Stunning colors and super fun to shoot with. And pretty solid. Mine look like new. I ´d wish I had reviews like yours when I got my D40. Nice. Thank you.

Base “ISO” of 200 actually works. Love those fat CCD pixels on that big APS-C sensor. You can shoot 1600 and looks like other cameras at 800. 💁🏻‍♀️

Yeah I don't get a ton of noise at 1600, Lightroom denoising has gotten pretty good!

You are wrong about the size of the SD card this camera can use. I have been using an 8 GB card forever without any problem. Also I am not sure why the 3 focus points are such a problem, I have no issue getting my focus, halfway push the shutter locking the focus and recomposing. The photos from this camera are stunning.
@PinkhatPhotography

Yeah it ended up being an issue with my ad card, I run the camera with a 32 gb SD card when I go out with it now. The colors that this camera produces are absolutely stunning, I believe the d60 has the same sensor set up as well. My issue with the 3 points comes mostly from shooting really wide open, f1.8 and f1.4 where the depth of focus is razor thin, and the three spots make some of the shots I want to get difficult when I'm shooting fast.

Actually the D40 accepts a 32gb Scandisk SDHC memory card. I have one in mine.

Yeah, I finally tested that with a different card and it worked great! I was definitely mistaken on that part!

Focus and re-compose. Great photos. The colors pop. Almost looks like you're shooting in a vivid mode and driving the saturation. Ken Rockwell likes this look in Landscape photography.

Very interesting review, I never shot with the D40, but I was always a big fan of the colours in the D50 (in fact, they were better than my old D5300). On these older cameras I tended to focus with the center point and then reframe the shot, though that's not always practical with portraiture I guess. Really liked the B-roll, and the vibe you had going.
@PinkhatPhotography
@PinkhatPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The d40 I think has better color than my d50, both cameras do outperform my d5100 in color capture. I think you are spot on with the center focus with landscape Photography though. I think the d40 is going to really shine in that aspect

I use my D40 with 32GB Micro SD cards with an adapter; it’s the maximum the camera can support. I’ve been using it for the past 7 years and it’s now at 104,000 shutter actuations. I’m waiting for it to die before I get a new camera I started photography with this camera so I’ve never known anything more, but back button focus pretty much alleviates the three focus points issue. I’ll be blown away when I get my hands on a snazzy Z-series Nikon, but I really enjoy pushing this camera to the limit. I know it so well at this point that I can get some really good photos and have a lot of fun with it
@PinkhatPhotography

For the most accurate focus I always only ever use the single centre point, and focus and recompose. Even on my flagship professional Nikon D4 with 50+ focus points. Try it, most pro's that started on film cameras where there was only ever 1 centre focus point had no choice, and so carried on this technique even when there were more. The Nikon D40 was my first digital camera, and I still use it to this day as a backup to my D4.

I've really come to love using the d40. You're right though, the center focus was standard on all my 35mm film cameras, I just took for granted how much freedom digital had given me with a. Million focal points! Lol. How do you like the d4, I've only ever played with the d3

@@PinkhatPhotography Nikon D4, best camera EVER! Film or digital! .....and I've used them all, from the original F to the F5, D40 to the D4 and Sony from the a6000 through to the a7iii, and the D4 beats them all in my opinion. Love the ergonomics, weight, and the colours remind me of the awesome D40 CCD sensor! Try the D4, you'll thank me!
