Nikon D40 | Worth buying in 2022?

The ‪@nikonusa‬ #d40 is a trooper of a camera. The Nikon D40 uses a CCD, 6mp, crop sensor. The Nikon D40 was released in 2006, as a consumer camera. The Nikon D40 uses a single SD card, as the Nikon D40 is a consumer camera. Unlike the Nikon D50, D70 and D70s the Nikon D40 does not have an internal focusing motor. The Nikon D40 uses the standard Nikon F mount lens, so almost all Nikon DSLR and SLR lenses will work on the Nikon D40. We discuss the pros and cons of the Nikon D40 in 2022, and whether or not the Nikon D40 is worth buying.

I love my D40 which I have had for many many years, I recently purchased a D5300 and quite frankly I like the photos from the D40 better. As you said, the colors from the D40 are incredible, I also have found that I get sharper photos with the D40 when using handheld. Not sure why, maybe because it is lighter and easier to steady or perhaps because it has far fewer (and therefore larger) light gathering pixels on the sensor than does the D5300 with it’s 24 million pixels. No it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of newer cameras but damn it takes good photos. Oh and one last thing, with the advent of software like Gigapixel, you can blow up any photo from the D40 with excellent results so I haven’t found it’s limited resolution a problem.

That's fantastic! I liked my d5300, but it definitely was not my favorite camera to use in my collection. It did well but the d40 definitely has much better color

I have a D3200, and the colors are pretty good! Did you use the default colors or Adobe colors? Ever since I switched to adobe colors the colors are so much nicer! I mean at the time its more of a hobby, but I hope I can charge some money for photoshoots eventually.

I brought a Nikon D40 early last year, and have been loving it since! I am an hobbyist, but it has served me very well overall! I brought it because it was decent and cheap, which is what I suspect is driving most of the sales in for this camera in 2022! Your photos also look so much better than mine! Goodness!

Good review !!!! Helpful !!! Not to mention that the D40 has a higher flash sinch at 1/500, which is very helpful when using flash outdoors.

unfortunately "only" with an electronic shutter (blooming), but as long as you don't shoot directly into a bright light it doesn't matter. hm, I should dig out my old D40 again!

5:00 just assign the AE button to AF-ON and your problem is solved. The shutter will just take the shot without changing the focus

I mean kinda, but the issue is more that there is only 3 focus points over anything else. I am not a huge fan of back button focus personally on top of that

I made an 11 X 14 from a 6MP D50 and it looked great. I have a D40 now I've had for many years and 3 AF points are annoying-usually means focus and recompose like you said.

I own a Nikon D40 which I have owned since 2007 ... I replaced it in 2017 with a Nikon D7200 Now the Nikon D7200 has VASTLY improved lower light performance a faster buffer better autofocusing and has all the bells and whistles fitted as standard.. The Nikon D40 only has a very basic 3-point autofocus system. However, I still take my Nikon D40 with me when I know I am shooting in good light... It does what it says on the tin. Take good honest photographs.

Oh absolutely, the Nikon d40 is just a break little workhorse camera with amazing color science. I know several people that it's their only camera and they take some amazing photos.

Better lens would help getting sharper photos, but the d40 is limited on megapixels due to it's age

I had to search my house but found it. I knew I had a D40 somewhere. The D40 looks funny when I compare it with my D4. So tiny. Well I put a 18-70mm on it and lets see how it holds up. Battery is charging right now.

D40 was my first DSLR. So disappointed when it broke after much usage. Delighted to find another in slightly used condition with kit lens for only $50 a few years back. Photos with good composition will go to 16x20 no problem. Portraits are rendered beautifully, love the "only 3" focus points, much better than more numerous. Even on my D750, I only use one most of the time.

Unfortunately the era of the CCD sensor is probably over. In many ways image quality wise it's a better technology and has less inherent noise but it is much much less power efficient and harder and more expensive to manufacture than CMOS sensors so it's kind of been left behind. All of the sensor research and development is going into CMOS and has been trending that way for quite a few years. CCD has a much higher power draw than CMOS so that's likely why the D40 has a different battery.

I shoot center AF-S (back button focus and recompose, baby) even on more advanced bodies, so there you go. The D40 will always have a place in my heart, but at this point you are better off with a used D750.

Those older cameras with the CCD sensors (Leica M9 included) are still lovely, right? Obviously not for those who enjoy pushing the limit for low light shooting, but if you get sufficient amount of light, the result kinda resembles slide film. Is there any specific reason why this camera is not suited for portrait? All of my Nikkor lenses are manual, anyway.

Have a D40X, going to Tokyo this summer. Is it ok to take pics of the beautiful city neon lights by night? I'm thinking to bring just my 35mm f/1.8G which is quite bright. Will I make it?

Just pulled my old D40 out of the camera bag after 15 years having owned D800 and few others along the way. It still works like a beauty. It has an 18-105 lens on it but might try it with one of the f2.8 lens I have and see how it goes.

So you had your d40 in a camera bag for 15 years without any use, did you even turn it on in that time? Also does the clock battery still hold a charge and did you take the main batt out of the camera when you stored it?

@@davidcollins4227 My daughter said she used it about 5 times over an extended period before she moved out of home. I removed the main battery out of camera. Didn’t touch the clock battery. Before I sold it for $100AUD, I re-charged the 2 main batteries and tried it out. Works the same as the day I first used it. The new owner said he loves it which is great to hear. I’ll remind him to check the clock battery - thanks for the tip.

@@davidcollins4227 that’s a good question and one that I’m not an expert to formally answer. Let’s just say that perhaps the smart thing to do in hindsight is remove the main battery from the camera when you store over extended periods and make it a point to charge up the battery and turn the camera on at least once every 6 months if not sooner.

@@PinkhatPhotography So I bought the D850 last year although the Z mount is now around. Thing is that I have a bunch of great AF-D lenses and even the FTZii does not provide AF support. Nikon screwed up big time. Besides that the D850 is indeed a beast. Because Nikon will not make ( I assume) another dslr or succesor I got another D850. I will keep this camera as an investment for the future.

I'm sure its one that will pay off too. I havnt owned one but the ones I've used are a power house of capabilities. I switched to mirrorless for better pov for the channel and lack of lenses and such is why I didn't go with Nikon or canon. Though I will be getting an 850 eventually

@@PinkhatPhotography Get one. You will not regret a D850 although I must say that my older Nikon D4 and D700 are still pretty good. Not the crazy high megapixel monsters but color rendition and build quality is still great. The D700 for instance has a 42-45 bit colourspace and that is more than most of the cameras have sold today.

It's not bad, but it isn't great either especially for indoor sports and the lack of focus points. For slightly more you can get a camera better suited for sports photography, that being said, if you have one it's totally possible to use it and still get great photos
