People keep telling me they cannot take good pictures because they don't have a good camera. So... Today I'm taking the challenge!
I'm putting to the test a 12 years old DSLR camera, a Nikon D40, worth $150 VS. a Sony mirrorless camera A7R3 worth $5,400.
The results will surprise you greatly!!!
Results for the pictures:
#1 = Sony A7R3
#2 = Nikon D40
#3 = Sony A7R3
#4 = Nikon D40

@jacobschouten9980 5 жыл бұрын
You can definitely set the ISO to auto, it's in the shooting settings. You can also set the focusing point, change exposure compensation, and check metering in the view finder. It would have benefited you to learn how the camera works. If you had, you would have probably been able to get better shots, especially when you were familiar with your A7 camera, which made it less of a fair comparison.

Have to agree on this one. I never thought my Fuji x-e1 would be able to get the quality shots I’m getting now. Once you realize how much the lens does for a camera, you stop worrying about having to upgrade your camera. Saved myself a ton of money by buying good lenses and improve my composition first. Once you feel you have improved and you know what your doing, it’s nice to upgrade to new technologies that improve convenience more than anything. Best camera on the market will take the worst pictures if you don’t know what you are doing. I wanna finish my lens line up then at that point maybe consider upgrading the camera.

You can set auto ISO on the Nikon D40 and it has a light meter so you can get the right exposure in manual mode provided you are using a CPU lens (Nikon type G or D for example). The D40 produces nicer colors to my eyes than the Sony. Some photos were a bit underexposed, which of course is easy to fix in post. If you take it easy and plan your shots the D40 can produce beautiful photos! 😉

It is like CCD vs CMOS - as you see even old CCD sensor can handle pretty good colours. Few day ago I grab old D40 of my Father to compare it with my D7200 - it is impresive that 13yo camera can give you that amount of possibilities and fun.

I have an even older Nikon D100 and shoot with it from time to time for fun. I've printed 24X36 inch prints from this camera in the past. I also used to sell 40 inch prints on the old D1X a five megapixel camera. Shot well pictured would look great, but you do have to spend a huge amount of time enhancing before print when photographing challenging areas like where you tested the D40. With camera like D40 and kit lens you have to choose background carefully and pay huge attention to light. Shooting with cameras like these made me a better photographer. I could shoot a wedding start to finish with this camera no problem. I would also be able to get good quality results in studio on this camera. The only problem is time, I would have to work a lot harder to get great results. You still don't need expensive pro gear though. I got the Sony a600 for $500 the 60mm f2.8 DN Art for $240 (superb image quality I will use for as much as I can), I will be getting the 30mm f1.4 DC DN lens for $340. Total expense $1,080. I currently have the 30mm f2.8 DN lens that cost $170 so my kit costs $910 For an older Nikon (if you want to save big) Nikon D300 camera $200 and Nikkor 35-70mm f2.8 lens $300 (don't spend less must be excellent condition) for total $500. If this is still too much Nikon D200 $110 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II lens $120. Total $230, this isn't much more than the d40, but has much larger true viewfinder, built in motor giving full support of Nikkor lenses, and great auto-focus/exposure lock button. I used to have my back button assigned to lock exposure, press it then move my focus spot to where I want it to focus, then squeeze shutter release while keeping my exposure locked. This older Nikon cameras had terrible focusing, you have to be really precise. I can get almost 100% tack sharp using this technique No you don't have all the mirrorless controls or some of the newer DSLR controls or functions. I know my camera, I know I can overexpose by 1/3 stop in raw with the D200, I know I can overexpose by 1 and a third stop with my D7000. I know I'm going to get a crap load of noise if I want to expose for subject and bright sky, so I know I'm going to need flash or reflectors to get fantastic image quality. I am not going to shoot images with this much dynamic range on the D40, I could do it with my D7000, but not the D40. I don't need to say know your dynamic range! The D40 has about 8 stops, but the D7000 has about 14 stops. With the D7000 I know I can overexpose the sky by 1 stop and then bring out the shadow detail in post. I know what the end result will look like in my mind. If I do this with the D40 the noise will be unacceptable. In my mind I can still see the image. You can do with mirrorless what takes many years to learn with DSLR, but the learning is soooo worth it. If I had to I would make the D40 work and have fun using it. I would take great pleasure in knowing I will get better photos than most photographers today can get with the most best and modern cameras. Where I won't have fun though is the post processing, but again if you are learning I think this is the best way to learn. I learnt how to be a better photographer because I got so fed up with sitting at a computer enhancing junky images. I can edit an entire wedding today in 1 hour, and it's because of practice like this. I would recommend all people begining to learn (I didn't say learning, because we are always learning) photography to start with a camera like this. Use it and shoot with it, and learn how to get better images than most people do with modern cameras. Most people are really now that good. Learn to shoot great images that look great even when printed up to 30 inches. It can be done, you have to find out what the limitations are with camera and lens. With a kit lens there will be a sweet spot (as there is with all lenses, but more obvious with the Kit) in the zoom range and aperture setting. Know this range, know what aperture at what focal length is best, and use that for large print. Know where to place subject in the frame for best results. Test test test, then test some more, when you are sick of testing, test test test some more. Happy shooting guys!

Ooof, low blow, Pierre, on several counts. The D40 was an entry level camera at its intro, your Sony not. You are used to the Sony and not the Nikon. (I had a Nikon D40x - shortly out of warranty it died - “unspecified error msg”. ) Great and crappy pics can be made by using contemporary gear when used proficiently (or not used well, in the latter instance). Great images are the result of a complex equation of gear specs/abilities, shooting conditions, photographer skills, knowledge and abilities, post processing, and (most importantly ... camera strap quality - Corinthian leather and diamond studs, a must 😉). Gear upgrades may be warranted when you really need the specific extra feature - or you have a discount coupon (just kidding.). BTW, on the vid sharing theme, when an on-line mag like Shutterbug writes about, and links to your YT posts - as Shutterbug did this time - do they send you a notice (courtesy)? Just curious.

I can see in some professional cases where high resolution is required you need top of the line. But to be creative and take amazing photos, you don't need much. I agree a good lens goes a long way. There's no need for pixel peeping when creating art. Do these people also count how many noodles are in their pasta!?

Unfurtunately there is no great choice that is cheap. The 55-200 seems to be good at the price and has autofocus. The old 70-300 is completely garbage, dont know about the new one. I bought to my D7200 the 80-200 2.8 D used that have great image quality at a low price. But your camera doesnt have autofocus. You can try 80-200 2.8 af-s, 55-200, or 85 1.8 that seems to be awesome, but not so cheap.

Interesting topic considering how everyone seems to think newer = better when it comes to more megapixels, higher ISO, low light, better focusing, etc. This is not meant as a criticism but I think it would have been more fair had you got familiarized with the Nikon D40 before you began taking photos. (at least that's the impression I had watching the videos) It would be like me who uses Nikon equipment, to try and do a comparison with Canon and trying to figure out the Canon buttons and menus right before taking photographs. But still a interesting topic. Best wishes

I got the nikon d40 used for an elective photography class I took last year. I am an engineering major, but that class really got me excited about photography and I am thinking of trying street photography this summer. I dont have a lot of money to invest in a new camera so the d40 has to do for now. I am buying a 70 -200 zoom lense so I can ease myself into finding the confidence to do street photography.

dear sir, your aphorism begs the (philosophical) question: what is a "good picture''? Brassai, Doisneau, Lange, Adams had nothing of what we have today, and they pictured poetry. we are flooded with ''bad pictures" (again, what is a bad picture?), made on super capable cameras because we are more interested in upgrading our roster than upgrading our skills... greetings from an eternal photography beginner (with a poor, old nikon d40)

Sorry, but this was less about the cameras, then needing a camera that does everything for you. I was really surprised by how fluxed you were dealing with the manual focus on the Nikon’s lens. My friendly advise would be to take the Nikon and 50mm lens and spend a month or so of just shooting with that combination. I think it benefit your focusing and exposure skills.
@Pierretlambert
@Pierretlambert 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Douglas! I agree, I think it would be a great learning experience for me. The manual focus threw me off because nothing except my eye could say what is in focus. Even old film cameras have guides that align when it's focused. If I shoot at f/4+ that's fine but 1.8 get challenging for me. Thanks for watching! See you in the next episode :)

I liked your game, but in my mind, that was a bit of unfair game - D40 is APSC and DSLR, @7RIII is FF and mirrorless. It would be far more accurate if you had compared say D40 with @6000 series camera, or D3 with @7RIII. That being said, I was able to get great pictures out of just 5MP camera back in the day. However that was a bare minimum, anything lower than that is a waste of (any) money and time. I will agree with you that what's more important than a fancy camera is the lens and skills. My two cents...

Minute 7:04 the best shot with the D40 definitely it looks like the camera get more light? The sony shots looks dark... Maybe a fair vs is against nikon d700 or canon 6d old ones but the quality just amazing and they are under 1000 aud and more lenses to try cos Sony lens are too expensive in my case First canon then Nikon for quality images and focusing colour than a really expensive camera Sony a7r3

I think it just comes down to your preference. If you are okay fiddling around with your camera more and save several hundred if not thousands of dollars than use a cheap gear. If you are rrolling in the dough and you need 90 percent of your shots to be accurate than invest in better gear.

Sony is a top of the range pro FX camera.. D40 is a amateur DX camera.. you should've compared with D700 or D3..which was Nikon's top of the range at the time... they would've given sony the run for its money..plus that lens works on auto focus on those bodies..
