Got mine today from my local camera store that I intend to help remain open by shopping in. I have the f4 as well. The new f2.8 is sharper, brighter, seems to me to have better color and is an all around winner. Hood is more substantial and is felt lined. Has the very useful Control Ring that I will set for Exposure Compensation. Has the L-Fn button to set a custom control. This lens is compact, light, and first Class all the way. Going to be a favorite for sure. Don’t listen to T&C’s BS when they try to tell you it’s soft and plasticy feeling. Those two have come unhinged after going over a million subs. Although I think she’s been unhinged all the while.

Best stuff is really is best... only if it ends up being something that you really need and care for. If it ended up unused, then there was a mistake with the decision. Reviewers and pros will (most likely) possess all the "best" lenses and therefore they are not too picky reccommend everything they thought you need them.

the problem about the S line is: you can not speedbosst it to a m4/3 like bmpcc(4k) or z6, and most likely not to the ursa minis. the old nikons, you can use them on all the blackmagic cameras and also on the z6. soo i feel like they need to give us more to choose the S over them. if u you have a lot of cameras sticking with your nikon dslr glass will help you more. but if you can say that the z6 is your only camera, than.. there are still no long focal lenghts menaing you will still need a dslr for sports and wildlife, or you have to use the adapter... but than you will most likely get better images by using a dslr.

I will keep (until my D850 dies) my F-primes and sell my F-zooms (16-35 F4, 24-70 2.8 G, 70-200 2.8 VRII) ... I keep the 200-500 5.6 till I can afford a 500 5.6 or 600 f4 ...

If i'm currently adapting the Tamron 24-70 G2, do you think it's worth selling to upgrade to the new S-line, or should I save the money a put it towards other glass in the future? I can understand the reasoning behind ditching the old nikon glass for the new stuff and only spending a couple 100, but is the performance enough to justify a 1000+ hike from the tamron glass?

I'll be keeping the g version myself untill I replace the d4s and d500 with another z camera that is as you say 'pro' or with a grip.

I am not happy with the lens hood mounted on the lens barrel. The previous models had the lens hood mounted on the outer body of lens which kept away dust from settling on the barrel easily. It also protected the lens from external unavoidable physical contacts that photographs do face. Now that NIKON has increased the lens mount diameter on Z cameras and also brought the sensor very close to the mount chances are that the dust would creep and settle on the sensor very easily with this type of lens hood. As shown in the video the lens barrel of the Z lens comes out more than the previous F mount lenses. So the new design requires deeper lens hood with larger diameter which will add slightly more weight and make it difficult to use with a gimbal. So ideally I think that NIKON should provide two lens hoods. One for gimbal user and one that will be mounted on the outer body of the lens for better protection.

The last time I checked, the functionality and image quality of lenses deserve more attention. AS ALWAYS...your a hoot. Currently shoot fuji xt2, however, I have been eyeballing the nikon z 6 and have been trying to smack down this nikon....uhhhhh....nikor urge to purchase said item. Time and money as always control purchasing and acquisition of photography items. Have you ever had you sniff test and wind tunnel test calibrated. You know, just in case, if its humanly possible, could it be, however remote, .....Your testing is ......wrong? I crack myself up.... As always, keep up the good work and keep em flying... Now where did I park my saucer. Do you validate?

Hi Jared, first of all congrats for your 1M subscribers! Question:am I wrong or on the Z lens the front element rotate when you zoom in?? On the old lens I don't think so. If yes it could be a problem if you put filters on it. Can you let us know please? Greeting from Italy Fro! 😉

No, the front element does not rotate which would be Hell using a CPL filter.

Luca tornei - I go way back and don’t remember any Nikkor lenses that do rotate. Maybe some third party cheapo lenses do, I don’t know.

I’m i the only one waiting for a Z-mount version of the 12-120mm lens? This 24-70 f2.8 looks fantastic tho.

I wish you would have shown a size comparison of the lens mounted to the respective cameras - S 24-70/Z7 and 24-70 VR /D850

It "shouldn't" have been released when the Z6 debuted. I can tell Nikon wanted to demonstrate how diminutive the overall camera system potentially could be. The 24-70 f/4 perfectly made that point. The 2.8 version would have stepped on that.

2.8 to 4 is on F-stop. If the new cameras gain 1 stop usable ISO then the F/4 can go equally dark as the old combo of 2.8. In the old days we benefited from wider full openings through brighter viewfinders that manually focus easier. Now the EVF defeats that issue. Then the faster lenses were much bigger and heavier, and expensive. In the downside, the fast ones gave (much) more chromatic aberration (CA). This new 2.8 fixes size and weight, a bit. Now let's see if it has much less CA and is sharper.

Hi Jared, Well I'd like to see a test comparison on a brick wall for the whole 3 and comparison of image edge to edge. Until now nobody has done it neither for sony dslr vs sony ML. So the edge to edge sharpness of ML vs dslr has never been really demonstrated yet. Will you bd that guy that will show us the improvement and how it measures....?

Looks pretty sweet. Interested to see what Tamron and Sigma lenses will be like. Always found the quality of them to be just as good at a much more reasonable price.
