Hey Everyone! Little bit of a deep dive Geeky video here its certainly won't be for everyone ! For those of you that watched the whole thing I hope you found this video useful and found something that could help you. Also I know the big question is going to be can these changes be applied to the Original Z 6 & Z 7. I do not know yet but trying to find out details about new Firmware updates for the Z 6 and Z 7 going forwards. Thanks again for watching !

A lot of those changes could be put in the Z6 and Z7 firmware, especially where features are removed (such as view info disable). I am hoping that Nikon puts out a firmware update with some of those low-hanging fruit changes, but I am not holding my breath.

I was going to ask this very same question - I hope the software improvements make their way down to the z6/z7. I would love have the no info display, shutter speeds past 30” and the focus memory just to name a few. Thanks for the video!

I had a Sony A7riii (since sold to move to Nikon) - watching this menu summary would have made me cry 6 months ago. I know Sony has improved their menus, but for years people had to deal with a total incoherent mess. The Nikon menu is so intuitive and clean and so well designed.

Hey Richi, would love to see some close up comparison images with skin textures with Z vs F mount, similar to how Gordon at cameralabs did the RF vs EF 85 test recently.

I wasn't going to ask, that's why I'm late. The focus point in manual mode, with the D850 it's a fairly large red box. With the Z7II it's half the size. Any way to have it the larger D850 size? Question #2 ~ on the Z9 there's a 'glove' mode for the LCD screen, it can be turned off. Any such work around for the Z7II?

Thanks for the video Ricci. It really looks like Nikon has addressed most of the things that the Z's were criticised for. They listened! I have a Z6 myself and I think it's great. I hope they will give us Z6 users a firmware upgrade that makes it closer to the version II in regards to the customization. The new "no screen clutter" view would be awesome. Having menus that are (almost) equal makes it easier for user of the current Z and the new Z II and less frustrating.

I doubt they would. I've been waiting since the D780's release when I saw it in there. It's a feature I'm sure they want to help sell the new bodies. I think Nikon did a great job of adding features throughout the years on our Z bodies. I want it but if I were them I'd leave it only on the new bodies. They need money to survive anyway.

I am surprised you only have gotten 18l subs since you are the best source of actual Nikon information and the best lens tests of any channel or brand. I refer a lot of people to the channel but probably did not increase the sub rate much. The new menu options all make so much sense and really refine the control of the camera to personal taste. The less intrusive level display is very welcome. For me, the only real benefit for 2 slots is having video directed to the second card so in transfers to my network drives stills are not bogged down by large video files. The new focus control options are very nice to see, and not having to separately select a menu option for eye detect or animal and now the single af mode menu list has the eye detection choice. The ability to restrict eye detection to an area is exactly what I need for my theater work, where shooting individuals in a scene with multiple actors it will be a snap to assure AF is limited to who I am seeking. That is a side business that grew from volunteering to shoot at a few theaters where my friends were actors, and that grew into contracts with 31 theaters, that augments my product, portraiture and fashion studio sessions. The more the details of the Z6/7 2 are seen the more compelling they are. These little details are significant improvements in ease of use. Will you be getting newer closer to production firmware before general release? I would love to see you do an AF test for tracking to see how much faster and sure it is. One thing that the KZbin influencers who pan Nikon fail to understand, the speed of display focus point tracking has little relationship with actual focus. Several of the usual bashers of Nikon tout the superiority of Sony AF over and Z6/7 by showing the speed of scene focus point indication but when burst most was used, one showed the actual images and the Z6 had far more in focus than Sony. The speed of the focus box had little relation to the actual attainment of focus on erratic moving subjects. That is what I find in shooting ballroom dance competition(which is faster than most sports) that I consistently get more in-focus images than my competing photographers who use a73. Shooting equestrian events, show jumpers reveals the same. Possibly the lens differences could be part of it but the Z cameras deliver the sharp in-focus images consistently. The trainers want 3-4 nailed shots on each jump focused on leg position at the plant, extension and landing. Due to the indoor training arenas, light is a challenge so wide apertures for the fast shutters that are needed and the Z6 delivers. The ONLY problem that took getting used to was the shutter delay compared to the D850, the shutter release button press and actual capture is milliseconds later so took some practice to compensate. From your tests do you notice any change in the shutter response time on the Z6 2?

I almost moved up to the D 850 but didn’t I get it due to back order unavailability and then talks of mirrorless. I thought my current lens setups would work good with the Z 7 II but the S lens are much more impressive than my pro class F lens as your videos are showing. 1. @DIYPerks4 жыл бұрын
Do you know if the Z6 II has improved video quality? I know the original Z6 uses a full sensor readout for video, and 'downsamples' it to 4k, but the maths it uses is pretty poor so there are some issues with artifacts on fine details, which shouldn't happen on a properly downsampled image. With the Z6 II having two processors, I was wondering whether the downscaling algorithm is improved at all. Having trouble finding info about it.
@infokanaal3 жыл бұрын
Hi DIY Perks, I cannot relate with the artifacts you mention, maybe codec compression on extreme high bitrate material? On the Z 6II you can even go 4k60. You will get a crop with 1:1 pixels which becomes even slightly sharper that the transcoded 4k30. Ricci mentioned this in one of his video's. If you want to get even more detail (10 bit), record externally on a Atomos or Black Magic recorder, you can even go (12bit) RAW video.

Ridiculous arrogance on Tokyo's part to ignore repeated articulated requests for this Option, which is so simple. Nikon has had the code since 2015 ie pending releasing the D5 and D500. NO sale to me until then. There is NO excuse this time. These cameras can languish in warehouses until the Firmware - or will it be Z vIII?
@ganeshbeee4 жыл бұрын
@@FCotterill Couldn't agree more. Heights of arrogance by Nikon and no wonder they're struggling to sell their mirrorless bodies. On one had, the Z lenses are setting new benchmarks with outstanding optics and on the other hand there are these half baked camera bodies with missing features and functionalities. This is one of the features a lot of photographers including some of the prominent ones like Thom Hogan and Brad Hill have expressly asked for in several of their blog posts.

@@RicciTalks Hi Ricci, could you please pass on the message officially to Nikon, as to how important this feature is for a lot of sports/action/wildlife shooters? I tried my best to write to Nikon officially on this one right after the first gen Zs were introduced but no luck. Quote from the online manual: onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z7_z6/en/09_menu_guide_03_30.html Bracketing Adjust bracketing settings before starting interval timer photography. If exposure, flash, or ADL bracketing is active while interval timer photography is in effect, the camera will take the number of shots in the bracketing program at each interval, regardless of the number of shots specified in the interval timer menu. If white balance bracketing is active while interval timer photography is in effect, the camera will take one shot at each interval and process it to create the number of copies specified in the bracketing program. Note that bracketing cannot be used during interval timer photography when On is selected for Interval priority.

Z6 really needs the clean live view option to come via firmware update, it can be really challenging to frame correctly in some situations with out it. (Eye AF in Wide Area L would be an incredible boon as well.) I hope Nikon isn't lazy/greedy in this regard. Both to maintain the same operation for people who own both cameras, but as an easy way to show appreciation to customers who supported this system from early on.

They should have the changes to the menus and focus modes for the original bodies, if only for consistency and better UX. I would personally hate to have differences. Hoping this will come but I’m not optimistic. Even if they can’t support the Wide Area Eye AF, then at least the older bodies should get the Auto Area Eye AF modes. I don’t believe what I read on DPReview about the Wide Area modes are processor specific, when it’s a smaller area to analyse. Doesn’t make sense to me, it seems like it should require less processing power. I think it would be nice if Subject Tracking was put in its own mode too. Not bundled in with Auto Area. The OK/FN activation is okay but this it could be refined further. I’m tempted to trade my Z6 in, but don’t need the Dual Slots or Battery Grip, so probably won’t due to the principal of it being menu changes mostly. AF performance I can live with. I’ll see how Nikon handles it first and if they abandon Z6/7 users. I’m sure most would be happy with even a paid firmware upgrade. People who want card slots, grips and quicker focus will upgrade regardless. Everyone else would just appreciate the increased menu and UI functionality
@stevenball92773 жыл бұрын
I’m with you 100%, I would love the non-hardware specific updates, I only have a set budget, so choosing Z lenses at the moment over a new body. But I would feel a lot happier if my body had a longer life than 18 months as it gets great useability updates. From a sales point of view, users would feel part of a system rather than just locked in. The old paradigm of camera sales has shifted and Nikon need a new model to keep old customers and bring in new ones too.

Hi, love the video. I just bought the Z7 II coming out from the D850. How can I see the aperture and shutter changes while looking a the back screen? I am an interior photographer and only use the back screen to compose and see the changes while combining the shutter, aperture, and ISO. Can't find this on the menu... Any suggestions?

Couple of questions regarding the Series II. Nikon DSLRs during play back used to show blinkies (over exposed areas) on the same screen that showed the RGB histogram. That was missing and Z cameras need two different screens to show blinkies and histogram. Has this changed. With series 1, you can also scroll through menus with the sub-selector (joy stick) but strangely when you press the sub-selector instead of selecting the option, the camera goes to shooting menu! Has this been corrected.

How is AF fine tune useful in a mirrorless considering the AF system is on the image sensor and therefore on the same plane?
@romanpul4 жыл бұрын
Because lenses always come with a bit of tolerance. So when you feel that your lens is not perfectly focusing you can try to adjust it to get better results
@samimina35044 жыл бұрын
@@romanpul you didn't answer the question. You stated how it works in DSLR.
@romanpul4 жыл бұрын
sami mina No, this is how it works in a mirrorless camera. In a DSLR the camera is focusing the lens in a way so that the image is in focus on the mirror where the AF sensors are and when you press the shutter the focus makes a small jump so that the image is in focus on the sensor. And in a DSLR this feature serve the purpose of adjusting the size of this jump.

Hi, with extended shutter speed turn to on, will camera calculate exposure after 30" or only work as a timer? I mean, for example if you use 3 stops ND and ask for 8 ", if you change to a 10 stops ND, will the machine calculate time above 30"? And Brakting too? Thanks

Thank you for this. A quick question: are extended shutter speeds available only in manual mode? Are these not available in e.g. aperture priority?
@teoteo92123 жыл бұрын
When you choose the extended shutter speed, let’s say you choose 60 seconds, can you stop the shutter whenever you want like around 40 seconds etc? I’d like to know before I upgrade to Z7 II.

I have a basic question that would apply to the Z6 or the Z6 ii. It has to do with image review. When i take a shot, using the viewfinder, the image review shows up in the viewfinder and I have to slightly push the shutter button to have it go away and take the next shot. Is there any setting that would have this camera act like my D850, and only show image review on the LCD, and not the viewfinder, if I am using the viewfinder for photographing. I know I could completely turn image review off, but I still like to "chimp" on the back screen once in a while, but I don't like that I have to clear it form the viewfinder to be able to compose and take my next shot. I am not sure I am being clear, but appreciate your advise. Thank you , and thank you for all of your informative videos.

@@TaipeiGeek What a strange attack. I am a full time pro, actually, and I've been shooting professionally for 11 years. But I think anyone who likes to customize the camera to fit their shooting style can relate, pro or not. Instead of giving us full customization to program any function to any button, Nikon restricts which buttons can be programmed and then further restricts certain functions to certain buttons. It sucks. All the buttons available to me are programmed to functions that are more critical than getting a clean display, so if that's the only way to do it I'm still going to be stuck with stuff on the LCD that I can't remove. I (and I probably most people) just want to be able to shoot with the LCD with a clean display, without having to awkwardly hold down a special button, and have it just stay that way until we change the display mode again.

Awesome thanks for the super effective video. Could you let us know whether Z 6II/Z 7II can assign "AF area + AF-on" function to any custom button that can doable on D500 or D5? I really like that feature.

Hi Ricci, Will these Z 6ii and Z 7ii remember and recall their drive mode even after going in standby or a restart? Like they do for Single , CL, CH. With my Z 6 it can't recall Timer after going in standby or a restart. Hope Nikon resolved that issue or atleast provide a similar option like "save focus position"... which can be called "recall timer" or something similar.

I'm hoping at the very least, they pass down the new Wide-L face & eye detect selection options. That should be an easy one.
@Justin-ny6un4 жыл бұрын
@@csc-photo From DPReview: The new cameras have received a major update to the way their autofocus works, with human or animal eye/face detection now available in the cameras' Wide area AF modes. The significance of this is that it lets you limit the zone of face/eye detection to the part of the frame you want to focus on, making it easier to select your subject. Nikon says this feature is contingent on the additional processing power supplied by the dual processors, and so is unlikely to be extended to the original Z6 and Z7 via firmware. The company also claims that overall AF performance has been improved, specifically in terms of stickiness, when it comes to focus tracking. Which I call bullshit. Doesn’t make sense to me. It’s to push people to upgrade.

What about using the Ux settings? Any changes? On Z6/Z7 if you use Ux and do some temporary changes, they are reset to saved settings when the camera is turned off (more than 5 sek). On the D7x00, these temporary settings remained as long as the Ux dial is not changed.

Ricci, is this pixel mapping like the "dust off reference Photo" option that the D700 had, ie this measured the dust and removed it in the image processing stage, ie: prior to one doing a sensor clean.

Hey Ricci, thanks for doing this informative video. Seems you are the only guy in N.A. that has early access....great for you but a huge fail on Nikon's marketing department. I have a question....when you are in H+ mode to get the fastest FPS can you still select AF modes other than Single Point and the FPS just drops to what a Z6/7 would have done in H+. For example on the Z7II the 10FPS is limited to using Single Point AF, can I still select Auto/Tracking and it will just drop to 9FPS like the Z7 would have had at H+ with all AF modes available? Thanks
