@oliverdesouza57414 жыл бұрын
Great review Christopher. I'm glad you've decided to look at Nikon now as most other 'reviewers' barely know the difference between reciprocity failure and pushing exposures! Just to clarify, the Z50's sensor is 20.8mp, so a similar pixel density to a 46.8mp full-frame sensor, which I wouldn't say is un-demanding. In fact, Nikon produced this sensor series first seen in the D500 after about 8-years of using a 24mp DX sensor (the highest that was around then), probably reflecting the fact the 21mp is a better balance of detail and diffraction usability [I believe you can get smartphones with 80mp sensors these days, LOL]. Anyway, let's not beat around the bush, the performance of this 50-250 is astonishing for the price and basically achieves similar to Canon L-lenses and Nikon Gold Ring versions from 5 years ago, in a much more handy package. This is due to the use of advanced aspheric elements in the optical formula, and top-level lens coatings. Moreover, the Z50 is a phenomenal performer for virtually all forms of amateur photography and video, again blowing away anything that was around 5 years ago, and I speak as a 30-year Nikon user with plenty of legacy gear. If only Nikon (or Hahnel/Annsmann) could get spare batteries out soon! Only really the field of fast sports / wildlife is beyond it's abilities, where not just fast AF-S tracking and frames rates, but also an optical viewfinder remains essential. Hence, an amateur needs still to buy a D500 for that. I'm looking forward to your findings on other Z and adapted F lenses. I can recommend any 300/2.8 or 200/2 from the last twenty years if you like perfection! But really, if you have a Z50 kit with 16-50 and 50-250, you are far ahead of any historical APS-C set-up, and many full-frame packages.
@EricMustardman2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your usefull and unbiased review. Nikon has had that tradition of offering cheap and cheerful plasticky lenses with good or even very good optical performance at very budget-friendly prices. You can't really ask for much more at that price point. The two DX Z zooms won't be in the way of taking good photos and even videos, and if they do, they won't be to blame but the six inches behind the EVF.

Hello again! ;) Thank you for your Nikon reviews!! I looked at the Z50 for months but then I bought a Fuji and after your reviews I regret it a little bit. Even though the Fuji system is great... but the Z50 would have been awesome for my hiking tours. Camera + 2 lenses less than 1 kilo(!) And you get amazing image quality for such a small and inexpensive kit. The Z primes work really really good on the Z50 too - Photo-me-Ike did great comparisons with the full frame Z6. If you want to use it for macro photo by getting as close to the object as possible use around 160 mm of focal length (not the full 250 mm). At this focal length the object will be the biggest on the picture taken. Thank you for your very detailed and informative review. I like the way you go into the different focusing tests at different lengths of the zoom. That helps my decision making a great deal. I do not have a Z50, but I have the new Z fc which came with the kit lens, 16-50mm. I was thinking about adding this zoom lens as a potential additional lens for long reach photos. You are very honest in the way you describe the over-all lens manufacturing quality, which I totally understand at it's selling price. I find it rediculous that Nikon does not include a lens shade with the lens, why not? It's just another form of lens protection made out of composite plastic. 👎. I get the whole "bring the cost down" thing. Anyway, thanks again, your review is short and to the point. Thank you. 👍👍😎📸

It might sound like nitpicking but the Z50's sensor resolution rounds to 21 mp. And its horizontal resolution is just 8% less than a 24 mp sensor or 12% less than a 26 mp sensor. Such differences are indistinguishable by the human eye.

For the Z7 shooters, this may be a very inexpensive, and viable option for someone who wants a small telephoto zoom lens for travel, of course you have to be OK with the 19MP images but the only people that will really care about that would be those who either crop a lot or print large (beyond say 8x10). But you're not really losing much over a using a dedicated APS-C camera (maybe 1.5MP, but not enough to make a huge difference).
@fattestallenalive7148 Жыл бұрын
Why would you consider this when the 24-200 already exists? Any sane mind would choose that instead of cropping away the expensive megapixels that you paid with the z7. Plus the 24-200 already is sorta in the budget category. If you really want to get the most out of the least money then choosing an apsc camera in the first place would've been better
@bilbobaggins4913 Жыл бұрын
@@fattestallenalive7148 £200 vs £600 might be one reason why a Z7 shooter would consider this. I never understood why more lens manufacturers don't put an aperture ring on their lenses, or at least let you remap the ring on the lens the way this one does, so you don't need to map the control dial to adjust every single setting. I mean it comes pretty natural to adjust the aperture directly on the lens, from my experience with Fuji lenses, and there is plenty of room for an aperture ring on longer lenses like these.

that's normal. While shooting (due to image stabilization) and also while carrying.

That's some serious performance, especially for that kid of money.

I was surprised to see samples of this and tiny pancake kit lens on z50. They looked like taken with a prime lens. I must say sharpness wise its as consistent as good 24-70 f2.8 lenses on ff camera. And that flare resistance. Nikon has done some magic here. Although rendering quality does look like a kit lens. Not beautiful and breathtaking as some premium glass. I wish nikon make a z version of 16-80 with this sharpness. That lens has amazung character to its images.

How do you recognise "rendering quality" in photos? What do you exactly mean by that? Just asking because I never heard that before ...
@vaibhavpisal4 жыл бұрын
@@patrick.771 it is not a scientific test per say. I just open flickr group for lenses i want to compare and see 100s of images at a time and see if i consistently like colours rendered by a lens. I think we can agree that not all lenses render images in same way, regardless of how sharp it is. Comparing nikkor dx 16-80 and dx 18-55, i dont see any differences in sharpness. But images coming from 16-80 have this, soft golden colour like its taken on a beautiful sunset consistently. Nothing looks harsh on it, even if i shot rocks and boulders. Kit lens on other hand has dull colors, out of focus areas are hazy, contrast between dark and bright areas looks harsh to me. Its all subjective, you might not find it that way.

@@vaibhavpisal ah, thank you! Now I know what you mean :) I personally really like the D750 full frame look, the look of some Fuji lenses and the Tamron 2.8 trinity style. My old Nikon 35mm 1.8 is also nice. And the colours of the new Z primes. Bought a new camera some weeks ago and I looked at sample images for months ...

@@patrick.771 cool. I also like full frame look. Really hard to describe what it is though. Its like I find those images pleasant for no particular reason.

The lens flare is not noticeable at all. Impressive.

It’s a DX lens, there is no conversion. It’s a crop frame lens. 50mm is 50mm, 250mm is 250mm.

It's a shame that the Z50 was so underwhelming and that Nikon isn't pumping out a full DX lens lineup. There's definitely room for an APSC ecosystem with cheap very high quality lenses built on the latest production methods (e.g. without the mediocre older lenses of EF-M, E-APSC, and XF).
@KungPowEnterFist4 жыл бұрын
The Z50 is underwhelming? That is an interesting statement. Its basically a D7500+. Z50 launch price, $860. D7500 launch price, $1300. The Z50 is actually a pretty good camera at a fantastic price.

Nikon Z holy trinity is current pinnacle of full frame leader optically. Just look at 24-70f2.8 and 70-200f2.8, leagues above whatever Sony has to offer. That was based on test units sent by Sony to reviewers. Reality is even worse. GM zoom lenses are made in China, inconsistent quality control, non existence quality assurance, you get lens lotto at its best. Nikon is much more reliable and consistent.

IMHO that's where the difference between a conglomerate corporation like Sony and a company like Nikon, which has more then a century of experience in manufacturing lenses, comes in. Sony certainly has the lead in technology, currently, but if we compare overall user experience, quality control, lenses performance, ergonomics, reliability and build quality I think Nikon is way ahead. I wish Nikon will find success and stay in the market, as when I'll decide to buy my first mirrorless it will be my first choice.

Nikon has nothing to compete with the Tamron trinity. I dislike the option of "pay the price of a used car or too bad."

“even at f6.3” hold on a sec and let's figure out how many stops there are from f1.4 to f6.3
@eliasalerno89424 жыл бұрын
why would you want that, its useless information? anyway: 1.4 > 2 > 2.8 > 4 > 5.6 and 6.3 isnt a full stop so its 4.5 stop difference.
@alpcns4 жыл бұрын
There's even more stops from 0.95 to 6.3. So what?
