Nikon Z6II Raw vs JPEG vs Frame Rate

Thanks Charles for giving us a balanced view on RAW vs JPG. It was remarkable how close the edited RAW and JPG images look, except for the backlit ones. I am a hobbyist photographer shooting only JPG, editing on an ancient 2009 iMac Photos app. I tried Canon’s Digital Photo Professional 4, but found it too slow. Could be my iMac though. And it was more suitable for RAW files.

Thanks for some excellent useful information Charles, being a relatively new wildlife photographer, I always leant towards shooting raw. I shall now switch and experiment with my photographs in both NX Studio and Lightroom Classic. I do realise that I will be sifting through many photos but maybe I'll get more keepers as well, after all I'm a 66 year old hobbyist that just enjoys getting out and shooting wildlife in my backyard.

Hi Charles, Thanks for putting out this video! Been shooting a Nikon D300 till just this week and picked up the Nikon Z6ii. Night and day difference. Anyway, I had thought I had been shooting in raw, and have been blown away with how the standard photos looked when downloaded. Then I noticed that I had only been shooting in standard JPEG !! So definitely threw a wrench into my raw is best practice.. and started searching for raw vs JPEG comparison. So glad I did find this video, being a hobbyist, it’s swaying me away from raw. The other factor is my mid2015 macbook pro running lightroom seems to struggling a bit processing the raw files compared to the JPEGs. Anyway, thanks again!

Charles loved this vlog am definitely going to try and shoot in jpeg for faster shutter speed. Can I ask you Charles have you ever used the Nikon z7ii and if so what do you think compared to the z6ii any information much appreciated mate.

No! not used the Z7II, but it has a lower frame rate than the Z6II

Hi Charles, well I made up my mind and Ive gone for the Z6II not used it a lot at moment but the little i have used i'm over the moon with it.. Autofocus is a lot better than on the Z5 and there's not as much noise as the Z5 when using higher ISO. Just re-watching some of your old vlogs with the Z6II. Cheers Charles. Fred

Thanks for the comment Andrew, yes many people shoot in JPG and are very happy with the results and that's why I made this video to show people that done right, JPG photos can look great

Nice video. On the backlit jpeg edited the raw edited does look better. I have a Z9 and CH I rattle off 20 fps. (I set my CL to 8 fps.) Surprisingly the number of shots is outstanding. I photographed a comedian/juggler balancing act and in about 20 minutes I had 966 photos. I have a D850 and CL is 4.5 fps and CH is 9 fps. Love the Z 9 for the fast action.
