South Florida has proved to be the perfect home for large reptiles from other tropical parts of the world. For example, the Burmese python, a native of Southeast Asia, has taken root in the Everglades over the last several decades. Therefore, it’s not surprising that a few Nile crocodiles (crocodylus niloticus) have been reported patrolling Florida’s swamps. But it’s still unclear if the Nile crocodiles are breeding in the wild. Florida law requires croc keepers to have a permit and report any animals that escape. To date, only four incidents have been reported and they may correspond to the four individuals identified by scientists. If they have established a population, getting rid of them may prove to be a bureaucratic nightmare. The Nile crocodile is protected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act. Special permission has to be obtained to move or euthanize individual crocs-even though they’re in a non-native habitat. Nile crocodiles in Florida was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro and is available at www.Ojatrovisuals.com

I don’t think people realize how terrifying Nile crocodiles are. These things are vicious killing machines. They’re not your friendly neighborhood American alligator that is mostly too lazy to give a fuck about you unless you get too close to it. These things will hunt you. They’re monsters. That being said, they’re awesome. Just don’t let them escape into the wild.

@@gutar5675 Actually, American crocodiles are more aggressive than nile crocodiles. But it's important to distinct predation and aggression, whereas American crocodiles are usually more aggressive but nile crocodiles are maneaters that specifically go out of their way to hunt humans. Whilst niles are less aggressive, they are outright more dangerous

@@the90thhunter92 I've only ever heard that American crocs are fairly timid and usually stay away from people. From my own research, I've only seen that they are considered to be less aggressive to humans than salties and nile crocs. Even less so than American Alligators because they are the dominant species and crocs are nearly endangered here. They are so rare that I've never actually seen one in the wild, except for maybe once when I was young. Alligators, however, I see all the time and are usually nothing to worry about.

With respect, no American crocodiles I have approached in the wild flee even when in the water with them or in a slow moving canoe. Niles and Salties would either eat you in the water or check your boat or canoe out to see if they can get a meal. American crocs have NEVER killed anyone in Florida and there are few incidents of them biting people whereas even the lazy American Alligator has killed and maimed more people.
