@28gire I think you're missing the point. I agree with you, they should have, but to make policy decisions now that are divisive within your region, instead of taking measures to strengthen Africa as a whole because you were oppressed and exploited makes no sense. If you want an Ethiopian state that is prosperous and financially independent of western influences, you'll have to make some local concessions. The stronger the region, the stronger your local trade, the stronger your country becomes.

Possessing a huge potential for ground water and in bounded with large lakes, Egyptians still bark saying that Nile is the only source of water to them. BBC you should also invite an Ethiopian's representative to reflect on the issue while you have a guest from an Egyptian side; otherwise its not fair and is illegal to present a one sided biased information on the issue to confuse the world. We are sick of this unfair information dissemination from the the western media about Ethiopia. Know that a new generation has arrived to full fill the dream of his grand grand fathers interest on Nile; no back slide !

This is a simple issue sensationalised by medias and politicised. It is a hydropower station so water flow constantly to generate electricity even during drought as long as there is water in the lake. In fact, the dam will prevent flood and drought by regulating the flow. During the filling of the dam, there can be an agreement for a minimum amount of water to be released. The time to fill up the dam will depend on the rainfall which cannot be predicted.

That’s all Egypt and Sudan want, an agreement to release a certain amount of water during the filling. The logic that it’s on Ethiopian land and they can do what they want is not true. By that logic Egypt could close the Suez Canal just because it’s on their land. The UN dictates how international waterway projects have to be resolved. I pray for a conclusive result that will please all parties. It’s easily achievable.

@@toppdonn8098 That is the worst argument I have ever heard. Ethiopia has promised not to use the water for irrigation purposes even when some part of the country is suffering from drought and famine. On the other hand, Egypt is irresponsibly wasting the water from the Nile to create commercial farmland in a desert. By any standard, that is a complete waste of resources, let alone a shared resource. The main issue has been Egypt's instance on a colonial agreement that gives Egypt a lion share of the water and leaves Ethiopia high and dry. with 0% allocation. Ethiopia was never consulted nor signed the agreement.

@K Boketsu from what I can tell, the Aswan Dam was constructed to reduce the unpredictability of the Nile floods, which actually helped downstream farmers, as their crops would no longer be washed away as frequently or not receive enough rain. In essence, the Aswan Dam actually helps Egyptian agriculture, specifically because it is managed by the Egyptian government. It can control the amount of water that flows downstream within Egypt's borders. The GERD, on the other hand, is not controlled by Egypt, and so they understandably have concerns about how it will be used. I'm not necessarily supporting either side, but I definitely am acknowledging that the Egyptians have genuine reason for concern.

- Egypt and Sudan agreed to apportion the whole Nile river ONLY between themselves,, excluding Ethiopia which is not only a basin country but a contributor of 85% of the waters. Is there a better example of "significant harm" than that? Or of lack of consultation? - Water is essential to life for Egyptians but not for Ethiopians? Don't human cells everywhere operate the same way and have the same needs? - In the event of lengthy drought, why would Ethiopia have the obligation to hold and release a predetermined amount to Egypt and Sudan? What cosmic debt do Ethiopians have to die of thirst while going around quenching the thirst of Egyptians and the Sudanese? What unbridled arrogance!

A lot of Egyptians have negative views of black people. Ethiopia's dam would give power to millions and improve the quality of life of the Ethiopian people. Egypt wants to stop the dam therefore ensuring that Ethiopia stays weak and less developed which will in turn justify the racist stereotypes the Egyptians already have. Crazy stuff!
@longclaw22-72
@longclaw22-72 4 жыл бұрын
Then again, it is pretty clear that Egypt has to protect their access to water. They're already struggling and this would precipitate the danger their people are facing. They've been taught for centuries that the Nile is theirs and theirs alone and even if it isnt true, they deserve to be protected....what a mess
@longclaw22-72
@longclaw22-72 4 жыл бұрын
@Nadhir Cherfaoui No offense but you're a fool if you really believe this. The issue is maily geopolitical/geographical, yes it's about ressources. But you know the inherent anti-black racism that North Africans and other Arabs are taught the moment they're old enough to understand the world. This racism is always justified with stereotypes like "they're lazy, they're poor, they live like savages without electricity, etc". So when Ethiopia (oldest black civilization, only African country to never be colonized) wants to improve its quality of life and get rid of the "3rd world" label and Egypt wants to stop them...I cant help but find it a bit ironic. Because without the dam, 30 years from now, racist Egyptians will continue to teach their kids that they're superior to the black Ethiopians who cant even give electricity to it's people. The Nile starts in Ethiopia. I get that Egypt needs the water, but Ethiopoa has the right to do what it wants just like China, Turkey and other nations are doing with its water. Maybe Egypt can do like Jordan and import its water?
@longclaw22-72

@Nadhir Cherfaoui And the geopolitical aspect is important as well. Egypt doesnt want Ethiopia to improve because it would mean that the Egyptians have to deal with a new rival on the Eastern African coast.

@Nadhir Cherfaoui We should be African brothers and sisters. We should be one extended African family but we're not because the North tends to see us as equivalent to dirt. You're trying to tell us that black and Arabs have equal standing in N. Africa? I have Tunisian, Moroccan and Algerian friends and they're the first to tell you that there is a big problem with racism in N. Africa
@longclaw22-72
@longclaw22-72 4 жыл бұрын
@Nadhir Cherfaoui And yes the Ethiopians are changing their mindset. Why do you think they're this big dam. Again, I hope they find a solution but Egypt can import its water, some of its fellow Arab countries are already doing it. I have nothing but respect for all people but I wont pretend that the bigotry isnt real. You're N. African so you know, you're just pretending and I'm not sure why?

Egypt does not have trillions of dollars to create thousands of water desalination plants to meet demands of 99 million people. Any country that stops or reduces the water of another, is by definition, cruel. Desalination plants is quite costly, can be environmently damaging, and hard to maintain, the water it produce is pretty expensive. Drilling for underground sources is more convincing but it depends on the level of water underground. Nile is for everyone, I think everyone should maintain cool head and not hyper nationalistic about it. Ethiopia has a right of the water because it in their teritorial sovereignty and eygpt has a right of the water because is technically their only source of livelihood. Hope for the best to africa!

Talking about legally binding agreement and such..., what exactly is the incentive or the appeal for the Ethiopians to want to partner with Egyptians in any way? In its long history; Ethiopia has never worked to harm any country and will not harm one going forward ! In fact, Egyptians were supposed to be very thankful to Ethiopia and other Nile basin countries as they have been almost exclusively using the Nile river for their benefit based on the unfair agreement orchestrated by colonial powers of the time without consulting the upstream countr ies like Ethiopia who contributes 86% . Now God has brought time for this country to use its natural resources and we will never sit and see any one to abuse our natural right of developing the resource we have as long as we never harm our neighbors ! As a British Ethiopian i usually appreciate BBC News coverage BUT now,in relation to the continuing legacy of British colonialism regarding Abay and the Nile, BBC continues to exacerbate the 'unfairness' and total disregard perpetuated against Ethiopia regarding her Sovereign resource-.If an objective report was the intent then an Ethiopian reporter(we have many) should have been invited to respond on our behalf. The UK felt strong enough about the Falklands to go to war yet the Falklands geographically speaking, originally, did not belong to the UK whereas Abay, is on Ethiopian soil and has always belonged to Ethiopia!.Britain's role in the histories of the M.East and Africa is at the heart of current conflicts..quite a legacy!

Egypt stands against "unilateral action", while presenting a unilateral colony era document as an evidence for its right over the nile water, what a hypocrite. "The Egyptian side insist on having a binding agreement that gurantees that the water flow willnot be affected by the building of the dam and by the filling and opretion later on." Here the Egyptian woman you forget to say that Egyptians were insisting Ethiopia should able to release 59 bill meter cube water every year, and when Ethiopia say I can't release more than 40 bill meter cube water your Egyptian government bring the unilateral colony document as a legal evidence. The Egyptian woman for your surprise the Nile is not the only source of water for egyptians as the middle east is not the only source of petrolium for USA. Egypt has an enormous amount of ground water and has a large coast line along The red and meditranian sea. atlast you present the Egyptian argument analticaly though it is full of misinformation and you Portray Ethiopia as an obstacle for reaching a multilateral progressive agreement. And BBC Is it hard to find an Ethiopian to present the Ethiopian side of the argument?
