The year: sometime in the late 90s. The place: a local venue here in southern California where all the death metal bands play. My friends and I pull up to the parking lot of the showcase theatre. Tonight we will see Morbid Angel. We are very early as usual. The sun is still out. We walk up to the front steps. There sits a short and stocky dude polishing his guitar fretboard. We strike up a conversation. We ask if he is playing tonight. Yes of course he is. His name is karl. We ask what band hes in. Nile he says. So whats it like we ask. Kinda hard to explain but its pretty brutal. We talk a little longer and then go on our way. We dont know who this karl guy is but he seems like a cool dude. We are here for Morbid Angel tonight! Fast forward an hour and sound checks are going on inside. We peek inside the cracked open front door and we see karl climb up on stage. Nile does a full rehearsal of the song Barra Edinazu. We pick our jaws up off the floor and reinsert them into our face. Nile blew the fuckin roof off in soundcheck. Holy shit these guys are gonna be big. They brought the house down later that night. Their music, relentless , innovative, colorfull, and soul crushing. Good to see that 25 years later the saga continues!

You should've seen Hatebreed in '95. Same thing. We knew they were the heaviest thing we'd heard since Pantera's Vulgar Display, and we knew they were going to be the biggest hardcore band ever. NO ONE had breakdowns as heavy as Hatebreed did when their demo cassette came out and later their debut LP. The mosh pit aftermath would have blood all over the dance floor, broken bones/noses, and teeth laying everywhere. It was nuts. This was VA Beach area in the mid-90s. And we were right: they became the biggest hardcore band to date.
