Using a fully charged 12v battery as the jumper supply works great too. Just work fast because the cables you are using WILL heat up really fast when you connect to the dead nicad cell.

Thanks! I did this and it worked great, saved 80 bucks for a new battery pack
@michael47lamb Жыл бұрын
@@brayden12 I also found the hard way the this fix may not really fix much. A few of the cells I flashed like this only worked for very light loads. Putting real stress on them weakens them further and they wont hold a charge very long and will fail again later. Highly variable results to say the least. LoL

To balance nimh battery packs, a circuit with two 1n4007 diodes in series plus a resistance of 1 to 10 ohms is used.The voltage drop in each diode is 0.7 volt x 2 is 1.4 volts.The resistance limits the intensity of the balancing current. Being soldered to all Ni cells this increases the life and performance of the battery pack.

I have found that even if you do tricks like that it is almost impossible to get any significant power output out of the pack... Even if it's above the fully charged voltage, put any load on it and the voltage tanks all the way down to 0. Pretty much time to buy a new battery pack at that point.
@no-damn-alias2 жыл бұрын
What I did to jump start them is use then times the rated voltage. So first I charged them and discharge them with high current to zero and back up charging. Then one cycle of very high current discharge so it gets hot until the battery dies completely. Cool it for a few hours in the freezer and then jump start them with ten times the rates voltage for 3-4 seconds. Work rather nice afterwards at least the capacity is fine

I have found that in the situation where the voltage reads high but drops to 0 under the smallest of loads but then bounces back to high voltage when that load is removed, it's a bad battery and there is nothing you can do to bring it back. Best thing you can do is take a couple of them and put them in parallel with each other and maybe together they might be able to power the device.. But would like to hear about any updates you have. About half of my packs that are ~10+ years old are at least half way to that state and the ones that were in that state I have already given up on and have already been recycled.

I recovered few of them but in my experience they don't work as good as they used to. Internal resistance is a lot higher than new pack. They still work fine in low current stuff. I'm not sure if i skipped it or u didn't measure it, but internal resistance is a big factor on older batteries, not just capacity.

You can get a dumb timer charger and charge them with that. But most likely that battery will always be the first one to read 0 volts under load if you put them with the others and cause you lower power output problems.

How do you check WHICH cell in pack has no voltage? Or is the strategy to "jump start" an entire pack to hopefully get some juice into each cell, so a smart charger can detect it and properly charge the pack? I don't understand why they can't make these smart chargers SMARTER, and provide a little voltage to the cell(s) it detects are not charged enough, so the charger can then properly charge the pack! I'm sure they would say it's a "safety" thing but I call it a scam. These smart chargers should be able to bring these deads back to life.
@lexicase880511 ай бұрын
Cut the shrink wrap off and use a multimeter to test your cells individually, and if need be like in my own case, put a charger on each cell one at a time directly to revive them but also balance the pack. Unless you wire up a balance lead like on lipo packs, the charger cant be "smarter" because its only got two wires to work with and treats the pack as one higher voltage cell, it cant see the individual cells

I found it to be quite illuminating. As for the gear, well chucks... I guess if you deal with such batteries even a little bit it will pay for itself in no time. For me for instance the cost of that red charger right now is 67 euros. I am looking to revive 2 battery packs. I just looked up the price for a replacement battery pack and it is 92 euros for 1 (I need 2). You do the math. I also want to point out that just like about everyone here (you got to this video for a reason I suspect) aside from my immediate need (those 2 packs) I probably have (of the top of my head) a couple dozen other packs I could try this on, instead of chucking them away (and the environmental impact that comes with it). Hell even the bench powersupply is dirt cheap, you can get them for a 100 euros (probably even far less if you look), when you think about what it would cost to replace those packs.
