ND Stevenson is the creator of the comic this movie was based on. I read his substack, and this quote he released about the creation of Nimona as a character always sticks with me: "I named her Nimona, for no particular reason. It just felt right. I didn't think I deserved love - but maybe she did."
@jimballard1186 Жыл бұрын
What enrages me about this movie (in the best way, because I'm pretty sure it was intentional) is the way the Realm is willing to thoughtlessly, heartlessly co-opt the voice and struggle of anyone they feel their hero worship gives them claim to possess. They have no idea what Gloreth's life was like--did you notice those cobwebs leading to the library where Gloreth's history was?--but since she's unable to speak for herself, they're gleeful about declaring what she does and does not believe. And once they think NImona is dead, they instantly begin the same process again with her, setting up idols and declaring themselves her fans despite never having known her.

well, nimona actually saved the city from harm and sacrificed herself(at least it looked like it) for that cause.... while gloreth actually did nothing glorious at all... if someone that does not know me, and that i don´t know gives his/her life to safe mine... i would be thankful, and make sure it´s not forgotten... as that deed stands for itself.... and nimona wpuld not be as arrogant as gloreth was.. nimona choose to step back out of the light, just visiting her friend... while gloreth set the knights order up by herself.... there is a difference of people just being thankful and people "heeding the call" of a "savior"...

The line that really hit me was "Little kids. They grow up believing that they can be a hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different." for describing what qualities we impart on our children, what kind of people we are teaching them to be. Sculpting innocents into villains feels even a worse sin than being one. Even if we fail to be good we should at least try to caution the ones following us from following us, and definitely not push them towards such wrong paths.

A few years ago, during campaign one of Critical Role (from whence Legend of Vox Machina comes) the author of the book, ND Stevenson, got to play on two episodes with the cast as Tova, a Blood Hunter Dwarf. ND was promoting the book Nimona at the time.

They did a really good job adapting one of the core themes of the comic (accepting difference), despite being unable to tie it into the other key theme (if killing and experimentation makes one irredeemable). They kept the heart intact, and it’s great to see you guys appreciating that nuance.

A hidden Gem that I haven't seen reactions to is The Last Unicorn. it is an older animated movie but since it wasn't produced by the big D is slides u der most peoes radar. it's animated, but it is noy a kid's movie. A kid can watch it, mine does, but I feel adults understand it more. It is based on a novel that is absolutely wonderful. Though they omit some pretty dark stuff in the movie to make it more suitable for young audiences it still flirts with some heavy themes and one character in particular is absolute nightmare fuel.

I remember watching that movie for the first time in high school while babysitting, and it felt wildly different from anything I'd seen before. The story is much more traditional then the Disney collection, and it ends up being melancholy instead of hopeful, but it's still so beautiful

I love that this is essentially a love letter to the queer and trans community. Not just pertaining to Bal and Ambrosias, but also with Nimona. The creator, ND Stevenson, came out as trans masculine and bigender, and essentially made Nimona an allegorical representation of that. This story greatly depicts the hardships being bigender, transgender, and gender non-conforming. Not fitting in with the societal norm and being made an outcast. And the dark intrusive thoughts of suicide from being rejected by the world because so many in it view you as a monster, unnatural, or an abomination. And those fears and feelings being created or reinforced by those on television and/or in positions of power. Nimona shows the freedom and happiness in living and presenting yourself as who you are, but also shows the darkness and hardships brought on by doing so
@GrahamChapman9 ай бұрын
Mmm, not quite. ND made Nimona quite a few years before he realized that he was trans masc and bigender. He's admitted that, though the trans metaphors are obvious in hindsight, he was unaware of them at the time he made the comic; he just made Nimona because he was struggling with a lot of feelings that he needed to let out one way or another, so it's kinda misleading to say that he made Nimona an allegorical representation of coming out as trans.

Great to see your thoughts on this! The movie is based on the award-winning webcomic by Nate Stevenson! The comic is a bit darker (lots of killing, but that drives the moral conflict), but tighter with the plot. It’s really good, I’d highly recommend giving it a read!

@@alyshaharper8730 Yes, but when most people call something a kids movie, it is one many made for kids. This has many things that a kid would not get normally. For one, the Queen killed at the start and the Director still wanting to kill Nimona even if doing so kills half the city's people.

I mean, the content ratings scale isn't based on recommended age for viewing comprehension, they are for if there's stuff in the movies that's likely to cause traumatization... Ergo, yeah, being about 13 years old is probably good for if you want to understand Nimona and its subject matters, but much younger viewers can still watch it and not end up crying in fear.
