@@SophiaPhannn but isn't Disney now showing off lgbtq shit? I mean in my opinion none of the kids shows should show lgbtq+ because its pretty controversial and just keep things classic. like these huge movie companies are focusing alot about lgbtq and racism when the majority just want a good storyline and make it fun instead of talking about controversial stuff I mean the racisim thing is fine but they dont need to always talk about it most of the time people just want to watch something with their kids or siblings that dosent correlate with cntrevertial stuff idk its getting annoying like okay we get it everyone should be treated the same idk im just sick of this concept like switch things up a little like respecting parents or standing up to another idk of having faith in god just anything other than the same topic that has been ran through over and over again.

I never thought I'd meet anyone who actually hates Ambrosius or his sweet romance with Ballister. And I must ask why all the slander? It would've been far MORE predictable if Ambrosius were the villain, since he's the popular boy and a descendent of Gloreth. But it would also make far less sense. Like, why would he make this relationship with Ballister and be so genuinely sweet to him for years if he planned to betray him the whole time? A fake friendship I'd understand, but a fake romance? One that Ballister never caught on to? That just seems needlessly elaborate and sounds like bad writing.

So I like the fact that Nimona had to sacrifice themselves to be accepted... Because thats often what happens with queer people, especially trans people. And you're completely right, it shouldn't happen. But it spoke to a truth about the world that really hit me. This movie makes me cry every time at the end. Their line "sometimes... I just wanna let'em" just really connects with me. And yes, I want a sequel so bad ❤

I didn't see it that way till my 3rd rewatch when someone in the comments said that the city people are just so quick to prop someone up as a villain or a hero as per their convenience. Hit me like a ton of brick that nimona's 'death/sacrifice' made them a more forgiving and non-controversial figure in society than they would have been alive. Breaks my heart that actual people go through this everyday.

“I wish Nimona destroyed the city” but that wasn’t the point of the scene? Nimona was just trying to get to the statue in order to commit suicide, they wanted to die so badly at that moment that nothing else mattered/they were literally wailing with so much hurt EVEN awhile getting attacked. In a way, they gave up at that very moment when they transformed into a monster.

Nate Stevenson/N.D. Stevenson was the creator of the Nimona graphic novel and helped make the movie as well. He also created the Netflix She-Ra reboot under his deadname because he hadn't come out yet. He wrote "Nimona" as a way to write the trans story in a way that felt natural for him to explain it. Fun fact, Nate voices Kwispy the Cereal Dragon in the commercial. Plus, the voice of the Queen was also the VA for Shadow Weaver in She-Ra. Ru Paul is the voice of the newscaster who says "this knight who might not be right." And last but not least, Ambrosius Goldenloin is voiced by Eugene Lee Yang of the Try Guys.

Actually, he wrote Nimona (the tumblr comic/graphic novel) quite a while before he even realized he was trans, back in college I think. The story was more a way of writing a character with destructive impulses and who's angry at the world, but that can still be loved by the audience. The trans allegory just kinda slipped in subconciously, as is the nature of a lot of stories written by trans people. But you're right about the movie (not sure if you were just referring to the movie, or to the original story as well)

@@merobiba413 Wow, I wasn't aware of those extra layers! I admit I didn't read the graphic novel itself, even though I did read a lot about it and I read the art book for the movie, and articles of interviews with Nate. I do remember that the bit about him drawing Nimona in their shark form; he had a sudden thought for something she'd shapeshift into and he only had a pink pen at the time, and for some reason drawing a laughing pink bipedal shark with boobs seemed really funny to him in the moment. It was just an impulse that made it into the comic book. That still gets me when I think about it 😂

Okay, can you please explain your hatred for Ambrosius, because I can't understand it. It kinda feels like you got hung up on him impulsively cutting Ballister's arm off (which he deeply regrets) and being manipulated and ignored everything else. Like how he subverts the common trope of the popular student being an a-hole, he genuinely cares about Ballister and is constantly torn between it and his duty to the kingdom, he and Ballister's connection is really sweet, and the way the Director's manipulation, and the pressure on him to live up to his ancestor, Gloreth is constantly tearing them apart is so tragic. That scene where they kiss at the end is supposed to be the big celebratory moment of them finally being able to be together again that fills viewers with joy. (And what caused Disney to cancel this, but that's beside the point.) Why would you WANT him to be the villain, when the nuanced and sympathetic guy we got is so much more interesting and less predictable?

Well the biggest reason is… I JUST WANTED TO BE RIGHT HAHAHA I put all my eggs into one basket, so I was bitter af that I was wrong LMAO 😭 I just thought it would’ve been interesting if he was the villain as I found the director to be the obvious choice lol well tbh both of them would’ve been pretty obvious choices, I think it would’ve thrown us for a loop if it ended up being Todd because he was so stupid 😂 plus I feel like if anyone’s arm got chopped off, they would feel some sort of way about it lmao Also I just thought of a good analogy: it’s like hating your friend’s bf! Sure your friend is happy with him, but after hurting your friend even once, that bf is on your shitlist forever 😂 and I think causing a life long disability is grounds for breaking up idk 💀

@@SophiaPhannnOkay, but Ballister understands that that the arm thing was him trying to defend the queen, and his forgiveness shows how strong his love is. Plus, if Ambrosius were the bad guy, than there would be no gay romance, Disney wouldn't have canceled the film, and I feel it wouldn't have gotten nearly as much attention, especially from the lgbt community. Two lovers torn apart by circumstance is just more enthralling to most than one being evil and trying to destroy the other.

I also hated Ambrosius and never got over it lolll He never listened Bal the whole movie, not even after they leaked the fact the Director tried killing Ambrosius like she gave one teeny excuse and he folded and low key the nacho meetup where he tried getting Bal back on his side made it seem like a "see the light and let me help you" conversation which gave me the ICK. He didn't redeem himself till the very end of the movie where he dived in to try and stop the destruction with the laser at the very last second. Now that I think about it I don't think he authentically apologized on screen once ;n;

This movie really highlights the problems that we have in modern society. Like you, I too was surprised that Nimona is such a full on shape-shifter that she can also duplicate the appearance of people. So much so that it was really ridiculous how no one could tell that it was her impersonating Ambrosius when she was exaggerating his dying phase, even you, Sophia. Personally, I’m all about just into animal shapeshifting than humans, although that additional skill is very useful when the opportunity presents itself in any situation when it’s required. Everything that Nimona and Ballister have gone through now reminds me these particular lyrics of one song by Imagine Dragons. “They’ll tell you you’re the greatest, but once you turn, they hate us.” It embodies perfectly in this situation. For Ballister, it was so easy to put the blame on him because he came from the lowest of the bunch that once he supposedly killed the queen, they see him as an enemy. As for Nimona, she had it the worst because all she ever wanted was to be accepted for who she is and what she’s capable of and the only thing the world ever showed her was fear and blind hate. Even Gloreth turned her back on her once she believed what others see her as and as a result, a kingdom was built around this lie. In other words, she was actually a false idol that influenced the lives of many that everyone now resides in isolation from xenophobia and government manipulation. With that being said, we can’t let others define who we are because they are not in charge of our stories. We are.

I like to think that Gloreth wasn't being hateful. She saw how the entire society around her was, how they all hated anything different, and realized that if Nimona stayed, she could never be accepted by such hateful beings. So she walled all the humans into a small space... so Nimona would be free. The only thing she could do for her. Sort of like the ending of Harry and the Hendersons. ... Or it could be that she just succumbed to peer pressure. Also, should point out Nimona didn't attack... at all... in any way that hurt anyone. The fire started because someone threw a torch at Nimona and it bounced off, not because Nimona did anything. As for not liking that Nimona had to sacrifice herself, understandable... but also remember these are _people._ As an aggregate, people are dumb, panicky animals (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYGwfoGsjrl4r6s). Even smart people can get swept up in that sort of stupidity (it's why otherwise smart people vote for "She showed us that all the problems we pushed onto others were actually problems in ourselves. But if we want a happily ever after we can _never_ let our guard down. Because the monsters..." "are always in here." First, this gets away from the fakeout death, a theme used _so much_ that it's making characters dying no longer _mean_ anything since (my nephew now ends up asking if they just died, or if they died forever... wtf?), for all you know, they didn't really die so why does it matter? Second, it involves an _actual_ sacrifice showing that the Director's hate was the problem. Third, it shows that just because something is _rare_ doesn't mean it either doesn't exist or is, in any way, a problem. Fourth, it shows that this isn't something new, that people like Nimona have _always_ been there, with them, not causing problems.

So glad to see you watching Nimona!! I really love it! I’m trans and tbh I get that Gloreths change of heart feels stupid, but it really isn’t, bc that’s how a lot of kids act towards minority’s, that’s how a LOT of kids acted towards Asian kids during the pandemic, and as trans, I went trough that, I had a very good friend, but when I told him that I was trans everything changed, is very realistic tbh, it hurt seeing that scene, she knew Nimona, who she was and that she wasn’t dangerous, but calling us monsters once is enough to start the fear, even if they knew us before that. And yeah, I get the sacrificing thing, but again, society don’t see us trans people as people, we’re monsters, that’s what we are for them, it takes A LOT for them to try to see us as humans, Nimona shouldn’t sacrifice herself to be seen and respected, you’re right, but we’re not given the privilege to be respected and loved, even if we sacrifice ourselves, I cried so hard with that whole scene. Nimona is beautiful and I wouldn’t change anything, bc is real, is crude, Gloreth and Balister doubting and calling them monsters an the first sign of danger, Nimona having to do the most to have basic respect, that’s what we go through, I mean, a 14 year old trans girl was k💀||ed and people are still calling them sick, boy and more things

Deserves a theatrical release on October 16, 2024 rebranded as the swan song of blue sky studios and distributed by 20th century studios (all mentions of Netflix edited out and replaced with 20th century studios and blue sky studios banners since it was mostly made by blue sky studios) so all that needs to be done is Netflix to transfer Nimona's distribution rights back to 20th century studios RIGHT NOW 14 months after its release to Netflix and 220 days after its oscar nomination.

I love this movie soooo much!! It such good representation of queer stories! I caný watch it without bawling my eyes out. The reason the credits are so long is because the movie was originally being made by a different studio(blue ky/disney), but got dropped. When it then got picked back up by netflix they decided to keep all of the names who worked on the movie originally in the credits. So they basically had double the amount of people to credit.

The 1 thing I didn’t like about the movie was how quickly Gloreth betrays Nemona. If something more personal happened like she hurt her or her family then that would’ve been a better reason for her to want to “slay the monster”

I think it's not ideal but it's realistic for people to only accept people they othered after said people turn themselves to a martyr or make some sacrifice for them. It’s messed up but really but people would still see them as monster if they don't commit the "ultimate heroic act"
@JBU27

For your reaction to Gloreth that shows how kids are influenced by the hatred of their parents! She was honestly a little scare when she saw Nimona for the first time but she loved her and saw her for herself but as soon as she is teach to hate and get stuck in that fear of the different she fully accepts the fake narrative so yep it was silly for her to not see that it was self defence but her parents, the adults in her life, were telling her what to think of the situation!! Side note: is so funny how you ex ruined Ambrosius for you 🤣❤

I will say, if you were reading the comic (which was what the movie was based on) you would have been vindicated, Goldenloin is a villain in it lol Ballister and him have a more friends to enemies to lovers arc

So while to us the Director being the villain may feel "Obvious" but it serves a purpose. The director and the institution being corrupt is meant to be commentary large institutions and government being currups and discriminatory. This is a childrens film and children wouldn't see this as an obvious twist because they haven't been exposed to this fact or life, or loads of media that depict this. It's kind of like how Barbie was "Introductory Femanism". Barbie had things to say, but its target audience being young, they had to make the message more introductory. Nimona's plot being the way it is is acting as an introduction to the ideas of Anti-Imperialism and questioning The Systems we live under

0:22 Since it’s the last day of Pride month this movie is perfect. 5:30 Nice. 5:44 Nimona is so Awesome. They’re so Cute but also Cool but also Energetic. 7:40 So maybe You Guys have Been living in fear this whole time and there nothing beyond the Wall. Like the director is using Propaganda. Which is the reason I hate her. And Propaganda in general. 8:00 Its really cool. it’s like Medieval but also Futuristic. 8:26 Primate Descendants. 9:05 Yep. 9:57 That’s So accurate to some people. Not me. 19:43 Its like a Sleep Paralysis Demon. 20:50 I can’t Believe they put Suicidal Reference in a kids movie. As a person who has had Suicidal Thoughts. Nimoma is one of my favorite movies. I loved learning about the production and creator's journey from the graphic novel to film. They are very different because the creator chose to focus on different themes that were more representative of their current experiences. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was similar. I do get the criticism with the Sacrificial ending, but honestly i feel like that's the point. Though the movie is very fast paced, I feel like it paints such a poignant picture of queerness and heteronormative systems in society. Ive watched straight reactors not pick up on any of the queer themes but the way Nimoma portrays homophobia/transphobia and its relationship to the systems at large(government, religion) hits home. Yes, society does have a quick change of heart because of Nimoma and honestly real life feels like that a lot. People will be fake allies or quickly switch views on an issue to avoid being in the wrong. Not everyone of course, some would still be hateful. It's not a perfect movie but I love it and I especially love seeing an ADULT gay relationship. Don't get me wrong, I love animation targeted at younger audiences, but I feel appreative of queer representation that isnt teen-centric. Loved the video and your thoughts on it!

Yeah I totally get that! I think for me, I think a perfect SATISFYING ending would’ve been if Nimona didn’t have to sacrifice themselves. BUT art imitates reality, and yeah-ppl are quick to change their opinions even if they don’t necessarily believe in it!

Perceive everything in this movie through the lens of religion indoctrination. Balastor turned on Nimona because religion paints a clear villain and provides a clear path. Even if he knows the truth, he can be blinded by falsehoods that give him back his safety net. "Shes gloriths monster" "oh my god she IS Gloriths monster. She must have lied about eveything then." Glorith turned on Nimona because religion gets you young. Her mother said "she's a monster" it turned in her brain "you're right. She IS a monster" this parallels young children abandoning their friends because rheir religious parents tell them their lgbtq friend is a bad person. The point of this movie is to show hoe these institutions warp people's minds, consumes them, and alienates those who have done nothing wrong.

i liked your reaction, however i didnt like how you missed the point of nimona not actually destroying the city. the fact that most of the damage was done by the people attacking them was such an important detail because queer people always get demonized and portrayed as evil people who “destroy” things while thats not what we do at all.
