...I was surprised this one only just crept into the top 50 - despite my tender years I remember it was constantly on the radio back then...🤭

@@IVORIESMAN During the revival from their 'years in the wilderness' around this time, Morcambe & Wise did a spoof type micky take of this song. It continued into thd early 1960s as I recall, and the song was never far from public memory for some years.

They did have an LP released in the US in the 1960s but it didn't go very far.

Weird, just came back from Discogs, and while 78s from South Africa and India are listed, this UK version is not! As well, the 45 version that IS documented has "Recording first published 1959" on the label, so unless another source can confirm either year, might want to go with '59 and presume it was a typo!

...thanks for this info Jeff, I'm inclined to agree - I wonder if that makes this 78 issue 'worth having' particularly. BTW - the flip-side does say 1959.

@@IVORIESMAN I think he was shot in some drug gang dispute...years after he and Nina had split up. This was one of my grandmother's favourite songs and I remember it being played when I was a little boy; I'm 60 now and still have the EP. Beautiful song!

@@clivewebb2361 Wow that’s a surprise, and yet they seemed like such a mild mannered couple. Thanks for that fascinating piece of pop history.
