I think the junk food shows another facet of obsessive/addictive personalities. You can be addicted to a person, food, your phone, and even hurting people. The scene where she revisits her foster parents, she places her gun on the table next to her phone and food. Those are the 3 objects of her obsessions. Pretty good screen shot. Notice when she no longer has access to the phone, she stops eating junk food, is a bit more cool/calm and doesn’t straight away kill the gf for not liking Ni’Jah. She is no longer feeding to her addictions maybe because she had to detox from her phone and learnt how to not be as obsessed with things/people.

Great points! However, in the last episode the only thing she actually ate was lemon cake. When she compliments Cree Summers cooking, she has a full plate of food in front of her but everyone else’s plates were nearly empty. That stuck out to me as another possible instance where Dre is an unreliable narrator.

I wonder if her vice is more-so junk food in particular, rather than food in general like one of her past victims. He offers her food from his home, but when she hears how healthy he is she becomes disinterested in the offer. She also had access to healthier food living with the cult, yet Billies character points out that she’s not eating. That could explain why she only eats the lemon cake maybe?

so i think Dre’s habit with junk food isn’t necessarily about addiction. it’s more about a childlike mindset. she never grew up due to being stunted at a young age. that’s why she chooses junk food to sustain herself throughout the show. and that’s also why she treats online interactions like they’re real. whenever she quotes people’s tweets to them, they can hardly recall that they said it. but it means everything to her. she compares grammy wins as if it shows who has a better music taste objectively. all of these childlike mentalities help you to understand that she’s a broken kid masquerading as an adult.

I do think that sex scene had a point. It happens in the pilot and it’s a short hand for how Dre is not just different but possibly dangerous to Khalid. Cause she’s not watching them have sex, she’s watching HIM with a blank expression. And the camera focuses on Khalid to show how he isn’t insightful enough to see that danger and act accordingly. She clearly hates him on some level and he’s too arrogant to be cautious. I knew he would probably die the second I saw that scene.

I really liked the show. I liked that the episodes were pretty short. I had no problem with the episode with the detective. Ain't no way Dre could be doing all these killings, leaving tons of DNA behind, and not trying to find her.

I think that she is too careless to be a serial killer. You can understand how careless she was from the fact that she takes the lifting weight to use as a lethal object and went straight into elevator without even caring about elevator cameras. She could be detected as a suspect so easily if she murdered that woman. But I think it is possible not to find her even though she is leaving all those evidence behind. Because it is hard to find causal link between those cases to reach Dre as a subject since the victims are from all walks of life and unrelated to each other and the motive behind the crimes are very extraordinary. Also I think the show tries to highlight the fact that people like Dre not only invisible to her foster-family, friends, teachers etc. but also to the public authorities so they could easily fall through the cracks.

Why they never connect the 2. 1) the show telling you how system mess up on 3 different levels 2) because she never been arrested they have no dna to track because when becomes a foster kid especially whatever happen at grandma house, those records when you born they hand & print get disposal & any thing left to dna as state can’t release because of her being a minor child. Social worker said it & went over everyone head even detective. So think about serial killers they get away with so long until they make one mistake or get to cocky. Ep. with stripper Dre & girls could off basic off the fact how dude was on top of her but trust is issue for her but when the girls actually act nice & came through for her she actually left fear of not know if they was going stick with her or blame her. It does seem a little far fetch that Marissa would kill her self over a guy. But in the documentary detective says that it didn’t look like a murder, and it was definitely a suicide and dre had an alibi for that night. Plus Dre doesn’t really seem like the type to make it look like an accident.

If you go back to scene Khalid & other kids was there I felt like was SA situation but when declined him again pull pant and adjusted his hat to me was a signal to the other boys to ruin the T-shirt stand & the lady stood say my son brought Unappropriate shirt and I would like to refund them well exchange since the guys stole all the money.

Dre unalived Marissa.Rasheeda was also in a lime green outfit(like Marissa), when Dre unalived her. And they had an argument eerily similar to that of marrissa's and Dre's. Dre is selfish and used most of her money to buy Naija tickets whilst Marissa had to ask her parents for money, as pointed out in episode 6 when her mother said , that she always asks them money for rent. As well as when the father of Marissa said that Marissa is the one always paying for rent, exactly like Rasheeda. The ending was showing us that Dre never left the house, she dissociated herself from what she did to Marissa, and used Marissa's phone to create a fake scenario of what happened that night. Which could also be the reason why the father cut off Marissa's phone account. The cut on Marissa's wrist was only implied by the viewers that she had attempted su*cide. Her parents never addressed That, neither did Marissa. However she could've been injured on her wrist, when she tried to get Dre off of the white girl, she tried to stab at the slumber party as children.....

Also the father said she killed Marissa. I find that so odd that 1) if it was a suicide, as we are led to believe, it would show on the autopsy that she OD'd 2) Dre doesn't deny the claim. Idk, If I was accused of killing someone and I clearly didn't, I would be fighting against that HARD! I found that to be very interesting. I also believe Dre disassociated and choked Marissa in a fit of "if i can't have you, nobody will".

I think the junkfood addiction was indicative of her lifestyle, from being in the foster system to now being on the run you notice she never really had any home cooked meals it was all BS food. But my favorite scene in the entire series was the therapy session with Billie. Dominique Fishback bodied this entire show but her acting in that scene was impeccable. Also her character arc through out the series was dope how she played almost 7 different versions of the same character yet was able to maintain a consistent them throughout them all. This show really knew how to market because everybody has been probably tuning in to see what the whole Chloe Bailey scene was about and then on Twitter everyone was riled up about Billie Eilish’s role an the Beyoncé allegories I hope the show get good reception I loved this kind of representation Dre really is a stand out character. I related to her, to her at times I was scared of her at times, and I was scared for her at times(especially episode 5)

Her eating after killing had me thinking that it was gonna lead to cannibalism and the more I think about it the more I think that would've been a good route to go down because it would've been like Dre trying to consume the essence of Ni'jah/Marissa. i’m a firm believer that Drea killed Marissa. Number one why Marissa have blood behind her head number ?two why was she asking to be picked up when she was FaceTiming in bed ?number three she found Marissa‘s phone near a bloody napkin I believe and marrissa did the exact same thing, the Drea, a.k.a. My theory on the junk food thing (a bit of a reach.) I think Drea’s parents may have been abusive to each other and one of them must have killed the other during a fight and Drea saw it. “I spilled the milk” sounds like something an adult would say to explain something to a child with nothing to reference what is going on because, even at a pretty young age, most kids know milk ain’t red. You might get away with brown or pink, but not RED. After the murder, they may have committed suicide leaving a young Drea alone by herself. Depending how Young Drea was, she may have been in the house by herself, afraid to leave, for a couple days. She probably survived eating all the junk food in the house because she couldn’t cook until being eventually found. That probably also is why she has such a distrust/disdain of men (though her future encounters with them were no better). That also could explain why the social worker said she was so lonely When sent to live with her grandmother. Her grandmother may have been stricter with what she was allowed to eat and probably caught her sneaking into the fridge one day and disciplined her which lead to her hurting her grandmother like she had seen with her parents. She probably tranced out when it happened.

I read an interview with the other writer on the show she said that black women are seen as the pillar of Hollywood... So I thought "How are black women portrayed in Hollywood movies"? And it's never like this.

I think Dre has undiagnosed/untreated schizophrenia which is often exacerbated by trauma. Symptoms of schizophrenia include hallucination, delusions of grandeur, and paranoia. It's truly a tragic and horrible condition.

This has been the best analysis video of Swarm I have seen yet! You did an amazing job and you even pointed out some things I didn't see! A couple of things in the documentary episode: When Mrs. Greene is taken to Marissa's room, we see that it's a normal room on the floor level of the home. So, that means that in the episode previous, when we see her run into the attic room we are seeing Dre's old room. That's her shrine to her sister. Also, the music has a faint mixing of bee swarms. I didn’t hear it at first, but my second viewing of it with better audio allowed me to hear it.

I’m only 30 seconds in but I’m hoping you discuss Dre’s interesting reaction to menstrual cycles (or maybe tampons). It’s only brought up 2 or 3 times but I thought it was weird considering she’s comfortable around other blood any other time. Also she hates fruits and vegetables. It doesn’t make sense for dre to had killed Marissa because she took Marissa to the hospital and then she sat in the house until they were evicted.I would think the police would want to talk to her if it was suspicious.

@@Discoball_Glitter There are theories around that Dre is the one who inflicted the wound based on what we learn in episode 6 which makes sense to me. There was also blood on the pillow and a bunch of other things that don’t add up when you review the chain of events and take into account that we’re seeing most of this from Dre who is delusional and an unreliable narrator. The show is very intentional about making things seems one way but leaving the door open for it to be another. Which is why viewers can easily debate on what actually happened. I think that’s what makes it such a great show.

the junk food thing could be linked to how other infamous serial killers have weird relationships with food, and maybe it’s an extension of her childlike nature. Something about her feels like she didn’t have enough of an upbringing, being introduced to violence and abandonment early on.

I don't think this explains Dre's binge eating per say, but in a way, it connects back to the "Atlanta" universe, Season 3 Finale "Tarrare"....the title based on the folk tale of a man who constantly ate but still was hungry (i.e Dre). And it's also the episode when Van developed her French alter ego that would commit a string of crimes, the same way Dre had alter egos and committed crimes.

Tararre eventually eating live animals and cadavers (and allegedly a child) to satiate his appetite is a cool parallel to Dre's bingeing eventually leading to biting Ni'Jah. It connects the addiction to bingeing and addiction to revenge (murder here), almost putting the behaviours on a continuum. I'm definitely reading too far into it, but it's still cool to think about

I don't know how this ties in with theories that Dre killed Marissa, but it's notable that Rashida is the only person killed slowly and personally via strangulation, as opposed to the way Dre normally kills people with mostly blunt force trauma. It's almost as if Dre can't help herself while killing Rashida, and she keeps saying that she loves her while she does it. Maybe Marissa's death was an accident and Dre killed her in some kind of blind complusion, because they don't really show any methods of s**cide like pills or a razor

I loved the show. Didn’t know what to expect at first but by the end of the first episode I was fully in. I loved the story telling, the overall commentary on stan culture and the root of it all. All of the cameos were super smart and well placed. Billie Eilish’s cult in episode 4 was a reference to the NXIVM self help cult and their sex trafficking group DOS which was run by actress Allison Mack. That in particular was so well done, and portrayed to the audience how easily anyone can fall victim to a cult that is seemingly positive and helpful. Episode 6 was a really interesting way to wrap up the story in a way that feels fully told but still give you the allegorical ending Dre believes to be true. So well done and I want more black stories like this.

Also, in Episode 1 she spent money she didn’t have on the concert ticket and offered them to Marissa just before she went off with Khalid. Khalid and Marissa were supposed to go to Atlanta for Marissa’s birthday. This is the same episode that Dre’s anchor, Marissa passes. I guess in many ways, the ending ties back to episode 1. Dre, now Toni is in Atlanta. She buys ticket with money she doesn’t have for her and Rashida’s anniversary… Rashida, Toni’s anchor passes too. I think the death’s of Dre’s/Toni’s anchors give birth to a new persona, my prediction is that she’ll go on to repeat the cycle or become obsessed with another celebrity.

I think the junk food is just a tool to represent gross over indulgence. dre says in several episodes that she's addicted to the killing. shes also addicted to binge eating. in the last episode dre completely changed her (his?) ways. until her (his?) girlfriend freaks out and says she doesn't like nijah which triggers her (him?) to murder rashida and we later see dre hugging the dead body next to a bag of chips, meaning that they broke, and went back to their old ways.

I think her junk food addiction represents multiple things as more than one thing can be right, and there's hella symbolism representing many different things in the show. The junk represents addiction, it can represent never growing up and eating a child-like appetite, it could be another symbol of how she doesn't take care of herself, it represents another way of spiraling, a means of wanting an energy boost in the easiest way to keep at her journey to try to see Nijah, there's bees so it could be like the candy being honey ie fuel which is what I kinda said before.

I have a theory. What if all this time Dre is actually IN LOVE with Marissa. Think about it. Dre was disowned by her foster parents because of two things, 1.She was violent and 2.She preferred women. This was mentioned when she went back to the parents' home post-death of Marissa. Before her death, Marissa complained that Dre would never get along with any of the men she ever dated. Maybe Dre has gone off the deep end and isn't just platonically attached to her "sister", but actually attracted to her. Which multiplies her jealous tendencies tenfold, especially when Marissa wanted to instead move in with Khalid than with her. Just a theory.

Dre unalived Marissa.Rasheeda was also in a lime green outfit(like Marissa), when Dre unalived her. And they had an argument eerily similar to that of marrissa's and Dre's. Dre is selfish and used most of her money to buy Naija tickets whilst Marissa had to ask her parents for money, as pointed out in episode 6 when her mother said , that she always asks them money for rent. As well as when the father of Marissa said that Marissa is the one always paying for rent, exactly like Rasheeda. The ending was showing us that Dre never left the house, she dissociated herself from what she did to Marissa, and used Marissa's phone to create a fake scenario of what happened that night. Which could also be the reason why the father cut off Marissa's phone account. The cut on Marissa's wrist was only implied by the viewers that she had attempted su*cide. Her parents never addressed That, neither did Marissa. However she could've been injured on her wrist, when she tried to get Dre off of the white girl, she tried to stab at the slumber party as children.....

I really enjoyed the show and want to watch it again at some point since the “documentary” episode sheds a lot of light on the events without the interpretation of Drea, who is an unreliable narrator. There’s also a theory out there that Drea killed Marissa, that she started disassociating and buried the memory of doing it. I’d like to watch the show again too see if this theory holds water.

In the 2nd ep: When Dre is pretending to be Carmen, she is walking to her hotel room and slaps her legs repeatedly swatting off mosquitoes. Is that a a confirmation that Dre has a RH O- blood type? Because Mosquitoes are highly attracted to O- Neg blood and is also the same blood type as Ted Bundy and Manson: which were prolific serial killers. Is there a connection????

In regards to food, someone already talked about it being a comfort mechanism in the comments but I think it also represents the emptiness and lack of substance in her obsession with Ni’jah. Parasocial relationships lack substance due to them being completely one-sided. She consumes an absurd amount of empty calories while engaging in absurd acts to further an empty obsession.
