Presenting Episode 2 of Niner's Ghost Towns and Gravel: Exploring Manhattan, Nevada. The Legend of Charles Breyfogle continues as Yuri and his intrepid riding partners Bridgette and Tony pedal onward to Manhattan. This is their quest for gravel road gold and a journey into gold mining history (and modern oddities) as these gravel riders explore the old roads surrounding this Nevada ghost town.
Manhattan, Nevada was founded in 1867 as part of a gold and silver mining boom. Fortune seekers from around the world flooded into the area. Mining continued as recently as several decades ago.
Today it's considered a living ghost town with an eccentric collection of functioning homes and businesses intermingled with abandoned buildings and log cabins. Few permanent residents call the town home, yet visitors are treated to a fun assortment of historic relics from Nevada's boom town past.
Manhattan was one of the home bases for legendary gold seeker Charles Breyfogle. The story goes that he was attacked in the desert while trekking to another area, but escaped, discovered a rich gold strike, then lost it again following another attack, capture, escape, and rescue. Breyfogle spent the next 26 years wandering the desert, looking for the legendary lost gold.

Chasing Charles's path, Yuri and his companions explored the gravel roads in and around this town, looking for their own brand of gravel road gold.
If you define "gravel gold" as deserted roads, endless views, and sovereign silence, then indeed they struck it rich.
