Presenting Episode 3 of Niner's Ghost Towns and Gravel: Alkali, Nevada.
Looking for a little solitude? Look no further than the ghost town of Alkali, Nevada. Little more than an intersection among deserted gravel roads, it’s the last stop in our tour of Ghost Towns and Gravel roads.
Our story, the Legend of Charles Breyfogle, concludes as Yuri, Bridgette and Tony pedal onward through Alkali. Their quest for gravel road gold (and a weird journey into gold mining history) ends with a sweet spin across a pancake-flat playa and a dip in the Alkali Hot Springs.
How did it come to this? In the 1860’s, explorer Charles Breyfogle wandered the deserts of Nevada looking for lost gold. He spent 26 years of his life trying to rediscover a gold strike that he’d originally found while lost in the desert, during an escape from captivity. Resting at an oasis, he found the motherlode, but after returning to civilization, he could never relocate the ore.
Retracing Charles's paths through the Nevada desert, Yuri and his companions explored the gravel roads in and around Belmont, Manhattan, and Alkali. More important than what they found might be what they didn’t find. Almost devoid of modern human influence, these relic outposts of a forgotten time are a welcome escape from the complexities of modern life.
If your brand of gold includes deserted roads, endless views, and sovereign silence, then indeed they struck it rich.
