I'm so glad this game is finally getting the full on Cinemassacre seal of approval. It's my favourite NES game, so much depth with the strategy and tons of variation and situations that force you to learn without holding your hand like so many modern games. Such a well designed game, I was always of the opinion that people who shit on it just remembered not being able to beat it as a kid. Just cos it's hard doesn't make it bad. It took me twenty something years to get good at this game. Konami really knew what they were doing. Thanks for the proper review!😊
@boblangford551411 ай бұрын
It has lots of problems, but the more you play it, the more you learn how to work around those problems. But the way Donnie is so OP makes it less enjoyable to play. I wish there was more balance between the turtles, with each having a different strength and weakness.
@Metal_Horror10 ай бұрын
Well, the vast majority of games for the NES are difficult, so unless they're only playing Bubble Bobble or something, they probably have other reasons for not liking it. I never finished half the games I had and I liked most of them to some extent, although there were a few I couldn't stand. Like Mission Impossible. Oh, and Back to the Future. But I've had plenty of games featured on AVGN that were a lot better than he gave them credit for. Friday the 13th comes to mind. They actually revisited that one and both changed their minds about it; Mike beat it on stream, and they did a few runs together on YT.

@Hayabusa 530 I played and beat the game more than a few times as a kid. However, I wasn't crazy enough to believe that it was an actual good well programmed game, like Contra and Castlevania. The game was above average at best, if not very frustrating at times imo. The music was awesome though. To prove I beat it as a kid, the strategy was to use the triple stars on the technodrone, and save the scrolls for two turtles right up until you get to the last hallway with the astronauts. If you had at least 25 scrolls by that point, the astronauts and shredder were no big deal. I didn't know about the Donatello Shredder glitch back then.

I never did it as a kid, but when I got back into playing NES in my mid 20’s it wasn’t all that hard, there’s certainly a lot worse in the library. You just got to prepare for the Technodrome by grinding for scrolls. I don’t 100% finish it every time I try, you can sometimes have a bad run where the space men at the end drain all your health (once you die on the last level no point even trying to continue all your sub weapons are gone and you are screwed) but I’m fairly consistent.

This game was part of the bundle of games my Dad bought me in 1989 along with the NES. Biggest flaw with the game was the lack of the temporary invulnerability after being hit. Most games let you get by an enemy after being hit but in this game they just drain your health! The cryptic effectiveness of the weapons just sucks! It really necessitates stockpiling the special weapons. The moon jumping takes a lot of practice to get used to and when jumping if you touch the ceiling you immediately lose your momentum. Game had good graphics and great music, but the game play was severely hampered.

It was TMNT, of course I'm gonna play it! lol Yes, it was hard as balls, and I still haven't beaten it to this day (mainly because I haven't tried in like 20 years), but it was still fun and well designed enough for me to keep trying. I enjoyed the Nerd episode for the nostalgia of the frustration, but it didn't change my feelings on the game personally; I enjoyed it as a kid and I still think it was well done, despite it's difficulty. I mean, over half of the NES library is hard; it comes with the territory. :)

@@Mikey-zj8bn I grew up in that age. Any 8bit game with a 16bit release would considerably be better. Look at it this way- let's say I had contra, section z, turtles, ninja gadein, and Friday the 13 as my game library. All except ft13th would get replayed. Besides I remember having this game for while. I also remember choosing to go outside and play instead of playing ft13th. The nerd is right about alot of these games.
