Since the indie comic first introduced the world to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1984, there have been A LOT of adaptations. TV shows, video games, you name it - but so far, there have been only six theatrical films. Mutant Mayhem - an animated movie produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver - will be the 7th big-screen take on the Turtles when it comes out.
THAT film is set in a new timeline we haven’t seen before, not connected to any of the previous movies or TV shows. But this isn’t the first time the franchise has been rebooted. Depending on who you ask, the previous six films take place in either two or three different timelines.
Doug: Depending on who you ask? Like who, the Watcher?
Ryan: I’ll explain what I mean in a bit, when we get to the first reboot in the franchise. But now you got me wishing Jeffrey Wright DID host a What If? type show with alternate Ninja Turtles dimensions. That would be radical.
Doug: It’d be totally tubular.
Ryan: It’d be bodacious.
[Ryan and Doug high-five and COWABUNGA!]
Let’s go through each of the six theatrical Ninja Turtles movies, in chronological order. We’ll skip the straight-to-video movies, like 2019’s Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for now.
I’ll also go through how these films adapted the comics in their own ways: sometimes similar, sometimes VERY different. This could give us a good idea of how Mutant Mayhem will be its own new thing, but also a part of the shared legacy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
I’m assuming you guys already have some basic idea of what the Turtles even are, right? They’ve been such a pop culture phenomenon for pretty much four decades, so it’s kind of a given. Just in case, the very basic premise that began with the comics - and pretty much is the case for most adaptations - is this: Four baby turtles were mutated with a radioactive ooze that made them smarter and stronger.
They grew up in the sewers of New York City, and were raised by a rat named Splinter, who also taught them Ninjutsu. The turtles are named Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael.
Doug: Oooh, they’re all named after famous characters from The Sopranos.
Ryan: What, no, they’re named after Renaissance artists. And they each have a weapon they specialize in: Leonardo has katanas, Raphael the sai, Donatello the bo, and Michelangelo, the nunchucks.
The Turtles typically use their ninja skills to protect New York, and sometimes the entire world. Their archnemesis is the Shredder and the Foot Clan, and most adaptations also involve mutant and/or alien villains as well, like Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang. Allies, like April O’Neil and vigilante Casey Jones, are also usually part of the Turtles’ story. Especially April, who is typically a lab assistant or journalist of some kind.
It’s a story that lends itself well to adaptation. It’s got a strong core premise that can be tweaked in all sorts of little ways, just like other pop culture icons like Batman or Spider-Man. Even details like where the Turtles mutated, who named them, or even whether Splinter was originally a rat or not, change from story to story.
This flexibility in the canon can make some of the movies feel VERY different from one another. Especially since they adapt not just the original comics, which were pretty dark and mature, but also the hit 1987 cartoon that really launched the franchise into the mainstream.
THAT version was a Saturday morning cartoon primarily meant to sell as many toys as possible, and was very different from what Ninja Turtles creators Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman originally envisioned. The movies, in their own ways, take different elements from both the darker comics and the kid-friendly cartoon and combine them into something entirely new.
So let’s start with the very first theatrical movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which came out on March 30, 1990. Directed by Steve Barron and written by Todd W. Langen and Bobby Herbeck, the movie was fairly low budget, made for less than 14 million dollars.

@@5FlyingOstriches All 3 of the original films have such different feels, times, directing, actors. I love all 3 still for their own reasons. The first was the intro/darker hello. 2nd was more colorful and comical, the third was a great mix of both, but less dark, lighter toned, cool effects and different characters, but still rewatchable! It's going to be 2024 soon and i think it'd be badass to see a practical live action TMNT again/

The original is by far the best. It followed closely the story from the comics, it was gritty, funny and had great action. Raphael vs. the foot on the roof is a genuinely good martial arts sequence. Fans of the comic were excited to see the turtles on the screen and the movie didn't disappoint. It was an 80's classic like Ghostbusters, The Princess Bride, Back to the Future or Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Fun Fact: One of the early ideas floated around that the film would follow a similar approach to Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) in which the actors would be interacting with animated versions of the turtles. However, this idea was quickly scrapped in favor of pursuing performances in turtle costumes from Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

Test footage unfortunately gave the turtles a more aqua or teal look, and they decided to scrap the story about the villain rounding up other mutants, which wound up being used in this movie. The earlier movie title of course being: Harvesting Blue Mutant Turtles, which was close to the original name for Star Trek.

@@BenSlashes of course not it was designed for kids as it should be but I still think it was a lot darker than any other TMNT production they have ever made. The OG movie was, and remains, one of the most faithful comic book adaptations ever. They took key scenes from the first few years of the comics, often nearly verbatim, and built a narrative throughline for them. They just PG-ified everything to be suitable for kids who liked the cartoons. No gore, no decapitations, no beer for the underage mutant brothers...but they stayed true to the lore and events of the comics. They adopted elements from the cartoon series, but did so wisely, not in a way that clashed with the more comic-centric narrative. For example, using April's cartoon job as a news reporter as the key to investigating the Foot, and ultimately bringing the Turtles and Shredder face to face. The script was very well thought out, faithful to the source material, and had humor, heart, and plenty of drama and action. The Henson suits, Hong Kong stunt team, gritty tone, the cast, and everything else, all come together to bring that script to vivid life. It's been diminishing returns ever since, in terms of feature films. The 2007 animated movie was...fine, but none of them come close to capturing lightning in a bottle the way that first film seemed to do instinctively. But I always hold out hope for another great TMNT film.

Fun fact the weapons used by the turtles are direct opposite of what they’re personalities are Raph uses the Sais because they are used for defense and he’s more aggressive and always wanting to fight Donnie is a tech wiz and really smart so he just has a stick Leo is the most reserved and not prone to being aggressive like Raph so he’s given the katanas and Mikey has adhd and is extremely erratic and can’t focus on one thing so he was given nunchucks to better contain his focus which also makes him the strongest turtle and why he was the last Ronin

Josh Pais was only in the first movie. In Secret of the Ooze, he was replaced by Laurie Faso (voice) and Kenn Troum (suit). Pais gives my favorite performance out of any of the Turtle actors, and I think it's because he delivered a full performance that was uniquely him, whereas with every other Turtle, in every other movie, it's always two guys...one in the suit, one doing the voice. Josh Pais gave us a brash Brooklynite turtle who talked with his hands, and always had the same attitude in his mannerisms and his voice. There was a cohesiveness to it. Unfortunately, he was also claustrophobic, and working in the suit was a nightmare for him, so I can't blame him for not wanting to go through it all again. Nor for not wanting to return just to voiceover someone else's physical performance. I do miss him in the sequels, though.

1990 TMNT all day. Still holds up. Still makes me laugh. Also, don't sleep on the 2006 version. Maybe the strongest story since 1990. Shame on you, Michael Bay

We all know that the 1st one (1990) was The One, and I have to agree that the 1st Michael Bay one wasn’t as bad as I though it was going to, he did that with the Sequel to that movie (🗑️), let’s see if this new one will be good, it’ll be getting my money this opening week.

The 2003 and 2007 TMNT shows/movies are my favorite, the 2003 series is the first time I hear a “your mom” joke and the 2007 just has a good story and I’ve seen it a bunch of times

I thought they look a bit younger in TMNT. I personally consider the movie stand alone with their version of the previous films events which is why they have all that trophy stuff.

The first one was the best. Creators who loved Ninja Turtles with the least amount of corporate influence.
