It's that part which made me think "Wait, did I actually play this in a store's demo unit back in the day?" I didn't get a N64 until May 2003, after its heyday (but not the used market heyday when it was still cheap,) and I never got a copy of Cruis'n USA (or Cruis'n World) from 2003 - 2010. If I did play either one, it was maybe just once.

Yeah, it didn't do the game any favors that half of the races were in California; especially since it felt like they added courses that could've been included into some of the others. For instance, the Golden Gate Park could've been a part of the San Francisco course. Los Angeles had two courses with Beverly Hills and LA Freeway. Arizona could've had the Grand Canyon a part of it, and they could've made a separate race for the Dakotas since they wanted to put Mt. Rushmore in the game. They wanted to put the Gateway Arch in the game, but no St. Louis course. They also went from Indiana straight into PA with Appalachia skipping over Ohio. And yeah, they put New York, Florida, and Hawaii in Cruis'n World, and Alaska and Las Vegas were in Cruis'n Exotica, but there were still some missed opportunities at races to include in this game.

Cartridges are amazingly resilient. Usually you can get them working by cleaning the contacts with a q-tip soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Not just N64, but MSX and Sega Genesis. P.S. I don't recommend using an eraser to clean contacts since that would remove a layer from them.

We'd turn the TV down and blast burnt CDs of Bone Thugs N Harmony, Biggie, Tupac, this new guy that came out called DMX, or whatever mix tape was out at the time. Then at some point it'd turn into NBA Hangtime. Then sometimes just sit and talk about girls while my friend aimlessly explored in Ocarina of Time. Some of the deepest teenage thoughts of what would happen "if we ever made it in rap" transpired on a cross country cruise through the USA. Just me and my friend with his grey controller, and my atomic purple one. I never cease to fear before time.

With one player it ran this way. Also, this game isnt exactly running 60 fps locked, it dips a great many times in various instances. Back to your point, 2 or 4 player (cant recall if 4 player was avail on 64 with original) was super choppy, easily reduced to 30fps and frequent disp below that much like all 4player n64 games, dukey nukem, dkong racing, mkart, golden eye, dukey nukem zero hour etc. 😉

One story: While starting sequence the cars I let drove and I stand still while when the other cars were on the run, I began to drove and that with higher speed (is genius from the producers, that cars at last get higher speed until they reached first one and or so and so on) and overtook all and in the best case without accident and without accident to the end. But sometimes, yes, crash was. And what is nice in rembebering, the squashed flys on the windshild from the car in the one setting to look outside the windshild.
