I suppose there might be a person or two that thinks Zelda is overrated, but Zelda invented and perfected the genre. What makes Zelda so special is that they have done so many different styles of gameplay without destroying the core concepts yet been successful at all of them. They've successfully launched on just about every Nintendo platform. They can be really in-depth or pretty easy to pick up and put down. They can be exploration focused, combat focused, story focused, and often a lot of combination of these. They don't scratch every video game itch, but they are absolutely outstanding games, all of them! The only downside to Zelda is that it takes Nintendo way too long to make the main 3D Zelda games, and they especially take too long to release information along the way. I will say there is one Zelda game that I don't like, though I have beaten it with cheat codes on in order to feel like I've experienced every game: Zelda 2 - The Adventure of Link. The combat is way way too hard for me, and I'm not a fan of games where you have to do something over and over again with no progress in the process. I could never play some of the Mario Maker levels you play for that reason.

I feel uniquely qualified to answer your Star Trek question because I've recently been going through and watching all of the series, mostly for the first time. I think the next generation is the best place to start, then maybe go forward to deep space nine, voyager, and then the original series. There are a few small references to the original series in next generation, but if you just know who captain Kirk is, that's the majority of it. Anything that comes after that I can't speak of from experience.

The Legend of Zelda is my favorite video game series, if you couldn't tell by my icon. I believe it was a Zelda related video which introduced me to your channel. You were trying to beat Ocarina of Time without collecting a single rupee, and a silver rupee puzzle was your undoing. I stuck around because I enjoy watching the Mario Maker levels (I got introduced to those through either The Basement or Mr. A-Game but they don't do those as often now). I've played most of the Zelda series, and I love the stories, puzzles, adventure, and especially the music. As a huge zelda fan, I agree there could be some truth to it being overrated because it’s one of Nintendo’s biggest creations. It doesn’t diminish any of its greatness though!
@y2kafka4722 жыл бұрын
I think it should be stressed that while it MIGHT be overrated to a degree that degree is not large (IMO). There's lots of clever and unique takes on levels and adventures and while the story isn't usually anything to write home about Nintendo does a good gob of making each game feel unique and alive (with various degrees of success). It's not the best game series ever and OOC might not stand up to todays games, but it did revolutionize 3D games for years with Z-targeting while providing a grand scope for adventure games and set the bar high right out of the gate.

A nice feature of the 1966 series is that it's episodic, so you can just watch an episode, enjoy it or not, and move on. DGR lots of Star Trek out there to be sure, but the "classic" stuff is five series and like 11 movies which is a bit more manageable. You can look up some "best of" lists and maybe watch a few episodes and decide which series you want to see. A lot of it can just be watched in any order, though with anything after the Original Series and the first couple seasons of The Next Generation the writers did start to embrace more worldbuilding and continuity which was welcome. The newer stuff is a YMMV minefield. I like most of it and I suspect detractors are just looking for more of the classics (which aren't going anywhere). Lower Decks is the standout for me though that is tonally different from most of Star Trek being a cartoon (it's a comedy) and makes fun of a lot of Star Trek tropes so might not be good for a first series. Strange New Worlds is shaping up well I think largely because it goes back to telling a complete story each episode while other series tended to focus more on a season long story arc. It's a melding of modern and classic Trek. Personally from the classics I love The Next Generation especially once it finds its footing around Season 2 or 3. From there Deep Space 9 is considered by many to be the best Trek. Then you might as well check out Voyager after that, though many fans feel it is a weak series it has its strong episodes. I've never really watched The Original Series apart from the movies, partly because of the low budget/effects and that it was made in the 60s when computers still took up entire rooms and we were still trying to figure out what Sci-Fi even was. There's no denying it was revolutionary for the time but I feel TNG was when they finally got the ability to have sets and effects which still largely hold up even today.

I think each has been good at what it did, but the problem is they changed genres along the way and fractured the fanbase. Some of us enjoy the top-down adventure genre. Some enjoy FPS (first person sworder) genre. And some enjoy Breath of the Elder Scrolls genre. To me, who enjoyed the top-down adventure games, First Person Sworder games were a hard transition but I eventually came to enjoy them. But Breath of the Wild was a "bad game" for me even though the majority of people loved it. And I know there are those who love Breath of the Wild but considered the original games "bad" because it wasn't their genre. The transition from action-adventure to First Person Sworder is actually what made me quit console gaming for a long time. I played SNES growing up, and was in college when Ocarina of Time came out. My brother let me try it and I basically stopped gaming then and there. I didn't return until 2016 when I talked to my brother about the cheapest way to play Ocarina of Time would be, and I finally tried it again on a used Wii and was able to enjoy it and Majora's Mask, then eventually Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword (unfinished). I won't play other games that do that style of play, though. I only tolerate it because of the wonderful Zelda storytelling. Breath of the Wild throws in resource management (I deal with that enough in reality, it's not fun to me as a game element) and digging across the entire expansive map to find the story (maybe if I had more free time, but I'm not that close to retirement...). I don't think any of them are overrated, but they're trying to be things that not everyone wants.
@tomhanks17692 жыл бұрын
