Nintendo has a long history of handheld consoles, but easily the most successful and iconic is the Nintendo DS. In this video we take a look back at this console, and see what made it so amazing. This is my Nintendo DS retrospective, enjoy!

On our 8th grade trip to DC *EVERYBODY* was pictochatting on the busride. We had a boys and a girls bus, and whenever the busses would get close enough to eachother we would raid each other's pictochat lobbies 😭

I was watching videos about the ds for nostalgia and the agorithm recomended me your video. Im so glad it did because it was amazingly made and brought me back to when I was little pictochatting with my cousins. Ourside of kid pc games on my dad's computer, the ds is what go me into videogames.

Mario Party DS is hands down the best Mario Party game I've ever personally played, and the other staple titles are phenomenal as well. I don't think there was a single outright bad Pokémon game released on the console, with memories especially going to the second generation of Mystery Dungeon games. I sadly never figured out how the whole WiFi thing worked during the console's hayday. I was a kid who, while using the internet to play flash games and club penguin and whatnot, didn't really know what WiFi was other than "the internet". It would've been fun to experience all of the WiFi features in the games that I played while I could, but I at least got to experience full tables of Mario Kart, Mario Party, and several friends with Pokémon games

Honestly, in my humble opinion the DS was the greatest console of all time. Its graphics were amazing for the time (at least until the psp came around) and it had some of the best first and third party support of any Nintendo console. Pictochat was a blast at school and DS download play is to this day my favorite thing Nintendo has EVER done. PS congrats on 40k :)

I grew up in the DS era of gaming: the graphics, even then, were definitely not amazing. I love the DS and agree with pretty much everything else you said here, but Nintendo during this era (and still are in the Switch era)were purposely using outdated hardware in their consoles in exchange for a lower retail cost.

@@mikaelpa The touch screen was a massive component to the NDS' success, but related to how it was graphically is a bit irrelevant. The DS came out within a month of the PSP (DS earliest release: November 21, 2004; PSP earliest release: December 12, 2004), meaning they're perfect to compare in terms of specs and what was available. The NDS uses a 67MHz ARM9 processor, 4MB of RAM and a couple 3d and 2d graphic cores. The PSP model that came out in 2004 uses two 333MHz MIPS R4000 processors, 32MB of RAM, and a proper GPU clocked at 166MHz. To support both consoles, the PSP runs off an 1800mAh battery and the DS runs off an 850mAh battery. To summarize what those numbers mean outside of just number higher=better: the DS is basically a worse battery powered N64, whereas the PSP was a worse battery powered ps2. Considering they were both releasing only a month apart with a drastic power difference, it's pretty easy to say the DS was underpowered even at that time.

For me, the DS is just one of those things where you can have a nostalgic time playing on the console but still find ways to make new memories and have fun! Some of my favorite games on the console are Super Mario 64 DS, New Super Mario Bros., the absolutely underrated game that is Super Princess Peach, and Sonic Rush. And that's just the free sample list of my favorites!

I miss my Nintendo ds lite it was red/black my brother in law bought it as an early birthday present when i turned 22 i loved it so much had it for 8 yeaes then the gba port stopped reading gba carts i gave it to a best friend of mind before i moved away she died 2 years later but the games i played the most were chrono trigger ds,super mario ds,space invaders remixed and reloaded,pokemon black my brother in law eventually bought himself 1 and got us both r4 carts for games we coukdnt find or were pricey now i own a switch lite and oled and want an R4 for switch bought in the usa but they havent realeased yet though.

Greatest device/console ever. Online connectivity in 2005, the most formidable battery ever created by man, revolutionize touch screen, GBA slot, etc. you literally can’t beat this.

@@somebodyoncerolledme7211 I have a ds lite with the original battery, I go over a week without charging and play a good bit each day. My 3ds is 10 years old and the battery is so fried it dies after 25 minutes.

what are you talking about when you said the original ds was ugly? Man, it looks so nostalgic. It looked kinda futuristic at the time. Sure, the ds lite with its minimalistic design looks cleaner. But the original DS design definitely has some charm!

Idk-- I kinda understand why people would call the original DS ugly even for its time of launch. The PSP was out at the same time which 100% would be more of a example of a futuristic smooth design, they caught up fast with the ds lite and dsi tho

Oh god the special anniversary sound, I remember that. And Pictochat. My step brother, my sister and I all had a DS each, and we would discuss on Pictochat. Those were the good days. Nowadays things aren't so simple anymore, especially between me and my sister.

6:39 I really doubt you'd have been able to open Pictochat in a built up area and always find someone. Pictochat is the sort of thing you play around with for 10 minutes when you're with your friends, but it gets boring quickly and opening it up to use on your own was really boring so it's not like people were in the city checking it. You'd have almost as much luck finding a Mario Kart lobby too. Unlike StreetPass, which was always running in the background so you'd always pass a few people in the city, Pictochat definitely wasn't like that.

Underrated isn’t the word I’d use since many grown up 2000s-10s kids still play DS( 3DS by proxy). But it is under appreciated these days at least compared to the Switch

Mario Kart DS did have a few DS gimmicks, but not many at all. like in the battle mode, you can use the microphone to fill up the balloons by blowing into the microphone. (if i remember correctly)

The original nintendo switch trailer showcased so much couch / multi-console multiplayer, which is extremely frustrating in the long run because they never catered to the whole multi console thing. Why cant the switch have the equivalent of DS download Play ??? Playing the DS with friends was so magical due to the fact that most games had at least a minigame you could share and play on dsdp, The first time i played m64 ds was through my friends download play host on the bus, it was practically free marking before the internet but I guess priorities are not the same anymore 😢 id love for minigames, shareware and general quirkiness to come back-

Nah, chill with the NTR-001 model slander! It was an absolute unit of a handheld, and while it wasn't as celebrated as the DS Lite or DSi, we wouldn't get to that without this model. Also, have you seen the E3 2004 prototype?

The DS was sort of like in between the PS1 and N64 in terms of visuals, but it was nice to play games like Mario Kart now with polygons on the go. There was a lot of hype for the DS and it outsold the PSP because of the games and the price. The PSP was also in between Dreamcast and PS2 and it was also a revolutionary handheld.

It's a Great Pokémon system that's all I'm going to say... If you like battling Pokémon since the Game Boy/Game Boy Advance, from Platinum/Diamond/Pearl the Gen 2 remakes Heartgold/Soulsilver in between, lastly Black & White plus it's sequels to Black & White.
