A playthrough of TTI's 1992 license-based platformer for the TurboGrafx-16, Darkwing Duck.
Played through on the normal difficulty level.
Steelbeak is building a new superweapon to take over St. Canard, and Darkwing Duck is once again poised to become the ingrown toenail in the foot of crime. Tuskernini, Moliarty, and Megavolt have each been seen studying a stolen painting that holds the secret to Steelbeak's plan, so Darkwing sets off to find the pieces of the painting.
You can take on the henchman in any order you like. Tuskernini's stage begins on the streets and leads into the sewers, Megavolt's takes place on the rooftops, and Moliarty's is set underground, and the object of each stage is to find the puzzle pieces and to take down the boss. Once they're beaten, you'll put together the puzzle pieces and make your way to Steelbeak's hideout for the final battle against the superweapon.
The action is your typical platformer fare. You defeat enemies by shooting at them with your gas gun or by butt-bouncing off of their heads, and the levels are straightforward gauntlets of obstacles with occasional branching paths tossed in to shake things up.
Darkwing Duck was created by Interactive Designs, the same folks behind the TurboGrafx-16's take on TaleSpin ( • TaleSpin (TurboGrafx-1... ), and the two games are very similar, but Darkwing Duck turned out much better. The controls, though delayed, floaty, and imprecise, usually respond to your inputs, and the improved collision detection makes it a far less frustrating game to play than TaleSpin was. The animation is choppy and there's not much variety in the backdrops, but the graphics put on a decent show and look more professionally done than TaleSpin's. The music, on the other hand, sucks. The small handful of tracks repeat over and over, and that droning organ really wears on the nerves after awhile.
Darkwing Duck is unquestionably the better of the TurboGrafx's two Disney games, but that neither disguises nor excuses its stank. The overall quality leaves a lot to be desired. If you're itching for a good Darkwing Duck game, do yourself a favor and pick up Capcom's excellent NES game ( • Darkwing Duck (NES) Pl... ) instead.
