I have a weird history with this system. It came out when I was in high school. I had an after-school job and thus had ample spending money for the first time in my life. I already owned an NES and a Genesis, but I didn't want to miss out on this new TurboGrafx-16 system, so I bought a base model despite the high price. After bringing it home and setting it up, I discovered that to hook it up properly to the TV and stereo, I needed to go back to the toy store and buy a plug-in thing that attached to the back of it for an RCA hookup, making it even more expensive. In addition to the somewhat crappy pack-in game Keith Courage, I also bought Dungeon Explorer, which I really liked. However I was not able to play it with my sister without going back to the toy store yet again to buy the "Turbo Tap" and a second controller. This was getting ridiculously expensive. A few days later, buyer's remorse swept over me and I returned everything for my money back. Flash forward to a couple years later, I was in the army when the Turbo Duo came out. One of my buddies had bought one, and he had Gate of Thunder and Ys Book I & II. Those games were light years better than the ones I had seen on the TurboGrafx in high school, so I completely changed my mind about the system and bought a Duo, which I still have to this day. I got heavily into the import scene and bought all the classics from Japan like Gradius II, Ys IV and Dracula X: Rondo of Blood. It's still my favorite system of all time. But I also understand why it totally flopped in the U.S. It was overpriced, overly complicated to set up, and there just weren't enough good games to justify owning one until a couple years later when the Duo came out.

@rodneyabrett6 жыл бұрын
I had all those accessories including the CD-ROM which was ridiculously expensive at the time. Sold it all for the Duo later down the road. I feel like NEC finally got it right with the Duo, but by that time, it was too late. They lost the console war. Best part about the Duo was that it didn't have any region lock so the import scene was something I was heavily invested in myself. Dracula X, Exile, Download, Valis, etc.
@pauljohnson75486 жыл бұрын
It's really a shame that NEC couldn't figure how to handle the U.S. market until it was too late. If they could have gotten their shit together and debuted a little later with the Duo and localized versions of like 20 of the best Super CD-ROM and HuCard games, they might've had a fighting chance.

@Mourning Star No, you clearly are not the sharpest tool in the shed. I grew up during 16-bit generation and was in high school during the Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes days (TG16 is in the same generation). I am 38 years old so...you want to try again. Furthermore, the Pokemon craze started in 1996 so it is completely plausible that he grew up as a fan of the Pokemon series. Now, I am not going to generalize nor try to guess anything about you aside from what I can gleam from your wonderful post. It shows me that you truly have nothing to add to the conversation and you like to say vile things to military veterans. I am curious to your station in life as you clearly lack respect and foresight. I will await your indignant response.

Excellent job man! I bought the TG-16 shortly after buying the Genesis. Unfortunately I was pretty letdown by it. After getting used to playing amazing Genesis games such as Ghouls N Ghosts, Super Hang-On, Golden Axe, and Revenge of Shinobi, connected via composite video / stereo audio. I had the TG with only Keith Courage and Vigilante and had to contend with awful looking interference ridden RF outpout with mono sound. It was disappointing to say the least. I later found out about the Turbo Booster, but no local stores actually sold it. I ended up returning it. Fast forward a couple of years.. I repurchased the TG16, for only $89, along with a Turbo Booster Plus. I also bought with it a bunch of games this time around, including the amazing Devil's Crush, Galaga '90, Blazing Lasers, Bonk, and Splatterhouse, and my feelings on it had totally changed. I really enjoyed it. I really think NEC would have had a much stronger launch had they packed in something other than Keith Courage, and also had given the TG16 proper composite outputs. In fact, anything after the NES in 1985 should have had this.

This was presumably changed to avoid any legal disputes from professional boxer Mike Tyson.

Fantastic stuff, man! I didn't realize the CD attachment came out so soon after the base system's launch. I wonder if this was a major reason why the TG-16 didn't catch on in North America? It's a shame because the base Turbo Grafx system had a killer lineup to start with. It's kind of sobering actually, as I always assumed the Genesis had the better starting lineup.

Interesting video Chris. I am not sure you were aware of this, but they made an NES port of World Baseball. But it was made by Camerica as Baseball Pro's. But the Moscow Bears, Peking Ducks were all in it and while the graphics are obviously simplified compared to the Turbo Grafx version, you can definitely tell its the same game. And yes, you have directional control of the ball while its in mid-flight and you are 100% correct in the fact you eventually learn how to pitch a slider that is pretty killer. Baseball Pro's was my favorite NES baseball game next to RBI Baseball. Lots of great history and top notch analysis as usual Chris! I would also agree with some of the other commenters saying the pronunciation of Galaga was strange to me, I've always heard it referred to as Gal-uh-guh. It may not be what the Japanese wanted it to be, but honestly, I've never heard anyone pronounce it the way you were. In the end, it doesn't matter...everyone knew what game you were talking about. Nice work!

These videos are getting better and better. Nice work! My parents picked Betamax over VHS in the video format wars, and years later I picked TG-16 over Genesis. Even when it was clear that the Turbo was getting destroyed, I preferred its library of weird and often-excellent games (Military Madness, Blazing Lazers, Galaga ‘90, Bloody Wolf, and the Neutopia, Bonk, Dungeon Explorer, Crush, Legendary Axe, and Ys series all come to mind). In 2018, most of those games have aged better than home-ports of shallow coin-munchers like Golden Axe and Altered Beast. The Genesis eventually had a stronger software library, sure, but there’s something about the look and sound of Turbo games that I’ll always love. Keith Courage was just the worst pack-in title imaginable. When I got the system for my birthday, I had only Keith Courage and Double Dungeons, if you can believe it: two games that were so bad that a group of kids immediately lost interest in a brand-new next-gen system. That game really hurt NEC in the US, I think. (Altered Beast was also arguably one of the all-time worst pack-ins, but it was a popular brand and showcased the system’s graphics. It’s a bad game that sold systems. It’s so obvious that The Legendary Axe should have been the Turbo’s pack-in-and that Keith Courage shouldn’t even have been localized.) It’s funny how so many of the games that US magazines trashed at the time-like Dragon Warrior 2, 3, and 4, Galaga ‘90, Herzog Zwei-are among the best-loved titles from their generations.
