I was introduced to UN Squadron around the time it was originally released by an uncle of mine, who was a Gulf War veteran. I would find out some time later that UN Squadron was not only an arcade title originally released two years earlier by Capcom in 1989, but I would find out that it was also a video game using a popular license. It's actually a video game adaptation of the war-themed anime OVA series Area 88, which actually had nothing to do with the United Nations. Area 88 was about mercenary fighter pilot Shin Kazama working for the titular private military company in a fictional Middle Eastern country, whom desperately wants out of his contract. I could never beat this game on my own ability, but I always loved it. Great playthrough.
@thecowboy26 жыл бұрын
The story I heard about Area 88 was that the pilots there had somehow been tricked / framed into racking up a massive debt to the PMC, and they were doing missions to pay off that debt but the company kept finding ways of making their debt bigger, thus trapping them in their contracts for life.

I remember my dad renting this from BlockBuster and watching him play it. As silly as this sounds remember I could not play it as it because the the graphics, and music had this super dark edgy tone and that scared me as a kid. An example I have is level two. its cramped with the clouds and then the B2 bomber boss was super intimidating and that music only magnified that. Sadly we returned it shortly after cause renting games was expensive back then. Still tho, this game has always stuck around in my memories and I very much want to play it now as an adult 🖤

One of my favorite games. A really great port from the arcade, which was rare at the time. With added levels and features, there is enough differences that both still have excellent replay value and I play both regularly. UN Squadron was constantly in the rotation at our house when we were growing up, and it's a real shame it wasn't two-player like the arcade version is (although the "super Nintendo slowdown probably would've been a constant problem lol). A great game by Capcom and a great port. You play it efficiently, nicely done 👍👍

This was one of my favorite SNES games. I had all the early shooters - UN Squadron, Gradius III, and Super R-Type. I found this game much easier, even on Gamer, than clearing Super R-Type on Pro. And I feel I should point out this is much more than a port. The arcade is way different than the SNES version, and I think the SNES version is far superior. Like the other commenter, it was always a toss up between this and Gradius III as to which was my favorite. This game plays better (less slowdown), but that Konami music always kept me coming back for more.
@Vednier5 жыл бұрын
For me Super R-Type was always kinda crazy in terms of design. All those bosses and levels, they very "unrealistic" in bad way. Some games taken it to edge, like Apidya, were you control Bee which fights insects and this was impressive, but Un Squadron is simply believable and thats great.

I didn't play too many shmup fighter games in those days, since jRPGs and side-scrollers like Metroid and Megaman captured my attention, but always enjoyed UN Squadron. Took me a while before I got good enough to tackle the canyon stage and Blackbird fight in the starting Crusader, but once I did, it was only ever that plane and the Efreet that I piloted on a playthrough. Though I will admit I often went with Greg instead of Shin because of the quicker recovery time from a hit, even if Shin powered up the cannon faster. XD

The SPC700, the sound chip of the Super NES/Super Famicom, has aged exceptionally well in my humble opinion. To me, the CD-quality sound of the SPC700 almost never sounds old, especially on an MP3 player. One thing I did hate about certain Super NES/SFC games with excellent soundtracks were the ones that didn't have sound test options, especially ones where the sound test option wasn't readily available.
